Murder at the Breakers
by Alyssa Maxwell
Newport Rhode Island, August 1895. Clues lead Emma from posh Bellevue Avenue across the bustling seaport to the modest Point neighborhood where she grew up, and to suspects who hail from America's most powerful families. While being the granddaughter several generations removed from Cornelius "The Commodore" Vanderbilt gives her the connections she needs to investigate high society, it's her Newport roots that will provide her with the stubbornness and fortitude to confront a murderer.
Rhode Island Lighthouses: A Pictorial History
by Richard Holmes
More than 200 photographs document the history of Rhode Island's thirty-one lighthouses and two lightships stations. including rare views of Gould Island Lighthouse, Nayatt Point Lighthouse and Point Judith Lighthouse. .
The book contains photographs of all the Rhode Island lighthouses built since 1850. It also contains photographs of all the lightships that served in Rhode Island and structures that replaced them.
 Beneficiaries by P.K. Taylor
Peaceful life in rural England is shattered when a small village becomes the focus of a major art crime investigation. An art thief loses control of his car, and valuable artwork is strewn across a quiet country road. Three locals discover the paintings. They know they should hand them over to the authorities, but they each have a motive to help the art thief and capitalize on their unexpected windfall. In this humorous, heartwarming tale of naivete, deceit, and greed, an endearing set of characters haphazardly work together to dodge Scotland Yard, the local police, and a zealous American art collector who will stop at nothing to get his hands on the artwork. Pauline Kay Taylor was born in England where she taught History for 15 years before relocating to the United States. She lives in RI with her husband and family.
Burn Palace
by Stephen Dobyns
Something out of the ordinary-perhaps even supernatural-has been stirring in the sleepy community of Brewster Rhode Island. While packs of coyotes gather on back roads and the news spreads that a baby has been stolen from Memorial Hospital (and replaced in its bassinet by a snake), a series of inexplicably violent acts begins to confound Detective Woody Potter and the local police-and inspire terror in the hearts and minds of the locals.
From award-winning author Stephen Dobyns comes a sardonic yet chillingly suspenseful novel: the literary equivalent of a Richard Russo small-town tableau crossed with a Stephen King thriller. The Burn Palace is a darkly funny, twisted portrait of chaos and paranoia, with an impressive host of richly rendered, larger-than-life characters and a thrilling plot that will keep readers guessing until the final pages.

The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry
by Gabrielle Zevin
What a wonderful book! Every once in awhile you read a book about a place, job, or business you'd love to be a part of. Island Books -from the delightful The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry- is one of those places. The story begins with a late-thirties aged man who is wallowing in grief after losing his beloved wife to cancer. All he wants to do is get fall down drunk at least once a week until their little bookstore fails and he can move on. However a theft of his rare book security cushion and an unexpected item left in his store change his life. I loved reading about A.J.'s journey back from despair to becoming a better person and better member of the community. My favorite part of the book is how the power of reading helps transform not only A.J.'s life, but also the lives of those around him. I read this book in one day and I definitely recommend it to everyone!

All Standing
The famine in Ireland forced many desperate families to flee to North America in the 19th century. A typical voyage took 4 or 5 weeks, and many never made it. Weather doomed many ships entirely. The passengers were already sick or starving, these vessels had little in the way of food, hygene or medical care so it's no wonder they were nicknamed "coffin ships". This is a book about those dark days of despair, and one ship the Jeanie Johnston and her crew who never lost a passenger. It also follows the story of the Irish immigrants, and one family in particular, who made the voyage and how their lives changed as a result. -Bob

 Crime of Privilege
by Walter Walker
A mystery set on Cape Cod, featuring the wealthy, politically connected Gregory family. Fiction imitating truth! Crimes committed, no one charged, and everyone is covering up for someone. Bill Reynolds from the Journal recommended this to me and I'm glad he did.

So much better than the film (though the film was great). Read this book if you love fairy tales and smart writing and loveable characters."

Gulp
By Mary Roach
Roach is one of the friendliest voices in nonfiction writing- funny, insightful, delighting in a good pun, but don't let her lighthearted style fool you into thinking this is a puff of pop science. Roach engages in extensive research and extensive interviews to create an informative and entertaining profile of the human digestive system. -Amy
