Fitness for the mind

The importance of brain fitness can't be underrated.

Concentration and mental alertness helps you handle everyday challenges, and prepares you for those difficult situations life can throw in your path.

Studies show that the adult human brain is surprisingly malleable: it can rewire itself and even grow new cells. We got some great books to keep your memory sharp, and your mind fit.

Annie Sherman

Author of : Legendary Locals of Newport

Established by Colonials seeking religious and cultural freedom in 1639, Newport has enjoyed nearly four centuries of growth-from a thriving seaport to a summer hideaway for industrial revolution excesses, from an active Navy town to a modern world-class destination for sailing and tourism. But beyond the marbled mansions and active harbor-front wharves lie legendary locals building a city of living history, education, arts, and philanthropy. And as this "City-by-the-Sea" celebrates 375 years in 2014, residents honor the diversity of the people who keep it flourishing

Great Books by Local Authors:

The New England Mariner Tradition :
Old Salts, Superstitions, Shanties, and Shipwrecks
by Robert Geake

For over three centuries, New Englanders have set sail in search of fortune and adventure-yet death lurked on every voyage in the form of storms, privateers, disease and human error. In hope of being spared by the sea, superstitious mariners practiced cautionary rituals. As early as 1705, courageous settlers erected watch houses and lighted beacons at Beavertail Point outside Jamestown, Rhode Island, to aid mariners caught in the swells of Narragansett Bay. Join Robert A. Geake as he explores the forgotten traditions among New England mariners and their lives on land and sea.

Recent Staff Reads........

Fear Nothing
by Lisa Gardner

Lisa Gardner has always been able to grab her readers in the very first chapter and not let them go until the end. It's never a straight path there are twists and turns, when you think you know what's going on or who the killer is and then you're pulled into another direction. Fear Nothing features D.D. Warren in a new way, she's been hurt badly on the job and she has to rely heavily on her husband for help. Enter Dr. Adeline Glen, an accomplished psychiatrist who can feel no pain due to a genetic condition. Dr. Glen, who is the daughter of and sister to two vicious serial killers, must try to get D.D. back on her feet and help her track down the latest serial killer preying on Boston's women. This book was fast paced, with intrigue and incredibly well written characters although I must admit the killer's methods made me a little squeamish. I highly recommend this book to all fans of great thrillers!

The Martian
by Andy Weir

Even if your not a science fiction fan, this book is a great read. It's the story of an American astronaut who's part of a 6 person crew that just made history by walking on Mars. Now they must make an emergency evacuation due to a severe storm, they think he's been killed and he gets left behind. He's got to figure out how to stay alive, and let others know he is alive. I loved the techno-talk, but it's easy to follow and believe it or not, there's a fair dose of humor. Set aside a chunk of time when you start reading because it maintains it's suspense right up to the end.One reviewer called it" MacGyver meets Mysterious Island."

Me Before You
by Jojo Moyes

Just a fabulous story about a man who had it all until an unfortunate accident left him a quadriplegic, and a very simple, unassuming woman who becomes his caretaker.
I thought the story was going to be a little too predictable, but there are actually many layers to it and it is very thought-provoking. Absolutely loved it!

Winter World: The Ingenuity of Animal Survival
by Bernd Heinrich

If you have ever wondered what all the chipmunks, turtles and butterflies are doing for the winter, then this book is for you. It is an amazing story of true survival in extreme conditions. I learned many new things about animals, for example, that some insects can generate tiny amounts of body heat by shivering and huddling close together. I has thought that was a survival strategy that only mammals used. That and many other fascinating details emerge from veteran biologist Bernd Heinrich, who is also a very good writer.  -Kim
