Great new books by Local Authors:

Historic Rhode Island Farms by Robert A. Geake

Dating back to the colonial era, the historic barns and outbuildings of Rhode island have withstood the test of time. From the early barnyard taverns to the modern-day horse and dairy farms, each of these buildings has a uniquie story to tell.In the mid-eighteenth century, the Narragansett planters bred horses on their farms in southern Rhode Island. Later, dairy farms sprang up across the region. Milking barns were built on the largest farms in the state, including the Theinhert Dairy Farm in Lincoln. Before the advent of electric tollies, urban barns sheltered horses early tramcar transportation. Each barn is a beloved reminder of the state's history.

Peace: Rhythm of my Heart
   by Thupten Tendhar

A beautiful book of poetry and the first book published by the URI Center for Nonviolence and Peace studies. If the journey to peace in our world truly begins within each of us then finding the source of inner peace must become our first step.
"Meaningful thoughts and images are portrayed through the simplicity of everyday surroundings and experiences. Thupten follows the rhythm of his own heart beating a path toward inner peace. If you listen carefully with an open heart you too will hear the rhythm of the chant, feel the pulse in each present moment, and take another small step toward your own enlightenment. Enjoy!"  - Paul Bueno de Mesquita

Legendary Locals of Newport
by Annie Sherman
Established by Colonials seeking religious and cultural freedom in 1639, Newport has enjoyed nearly four centuries of growth-from a thriving seaport to a summer hideaway for industrial revolution excesses, from an active Navy town to a modern world-class destination for sailing and tourism. But beyond the marbled mansions and active harbor-front wharves lie legendary locals building a city of living history, education, arts, and philanthropy. And as this "City-by-the-Sea" celebrates 375 years in 2014, residents honor the diversity of the people who keep it flourishing.

Survive your Husband's Retirement
by Nora R. Hall

Written for wives of the Two Million (plus) baby boomers who will become eligible for retirement this year alone, Survive Your Husband's Retirement looks at changes in a relationship--and the errant behavior that comes along with it--when a husband retires. Replete with couple's stories, cartoons, and coping suggestions, Survive prompts women to laugh, cry, and think--and finally--take action to return bliss to the relationship.

"The book is filled with humorous anecdotes and funny moments, but importantly brings to the forefront the importance of planning and preparing for the retirement life you will live. If you have no idea what awaits you in your post employment world, you may find yourself ill-prepared for the challenges of 27/7 togetherness."
.   Dave Bernard - author of "On Retirement" for US News and World Report and most recently, of the book I Want to Retire! Essential Considerations for the Retiree to Be

Graceling
by Kristin Cashore

Graceling is the story of Katsa, a girl Graced with the ability to kill. With such a Grace, she is forced to act as the King's thug and do his bidding, though she desperately wishes otherwise. When rumors of a missing queen and princess in a nearby kingdom reaches Katsa's ears she journeys with Prince Po, Graced with fighting, to find them. Graceling is an action packed fantasy with mystery, fighting, and a little romance that keeps you turning pages. I love it!

A Hundred Summers
by Beatriz Williams

"A Hundred Summers" a really fun read and set in the fictional town of Seaview, Rhode Island, which is really Watch Hill and Napatree Point. A love quadrangle that goes back & forth between the early 1930's and the summer of 1938, ending with the great hurricane. Very good characters and an easy read.

The Book Thief
by Markus Zusak

Narrated by Death, it tells the story of Liesel Meminger and her life in World War II Germany. Markus Zusak does an amazing job of putting the reader into this horrible time when atrocious acts were being committed and yet I found myself rushing home from work to read some more. The book had so many elements, not only war, death, suffering and terror , it also had love, friendship, loyalty and humor. As a lifetime avid reader this wonderful book was recommended to me many times by others who loved it. I gladly join their ranks and will pass it on to another book thief.

Mozart : A Life
by Paul Johnson

Paul Johnson has set a very high standard with his previous biographies such as Napoleon, Darwin, Churchill and Jesus.
His newest subject is Mozart. It's a short book weighing in at only 150 pages or so, but it is an iluminating biography of the composer written with great enthusiasm. It focuses on the music, the amount written in such a short time, as well as the genius behind it. You don't need an in depth knowledge of musical theory to understand and appreciate Johnson's book and see why Mozart's music is still performed everyday around the world.

The Child 44 trilogy by Tom Rob Smith

Child 44, The Secret Speech & Agent 6 form an exciting trilogy that follows the fortunes of Leo Demidov, an agent of Stalin's feared MGB secret police force. Set against the grim paranoia of Cold War Soviet Union, Child 44 begins with Leo a young & faithful officer who must grapple with painful truths in his own life while trying to capture a heinous serial killer. The trilogy spans 30 years and countless thrilling twists and turns as we follow Leo and his family. Recommended for anyone interested in Soviet history, the Cold War or just a great thriller to while away these frosty days!
