Small Business Saturday

Small businesses are the heartbeat of our communities. They're the corner stores that create jobs, and help build our economy. Compared to chain stores, locally owned businesses recycle a much larger share of their revenue back into the local economy, enriching the whole community. A small business selects products based, not on a national sales plan, but on their own interests and the interests and needs of their
customers. A favorite local business makes a neighborhood your neighborhood.

Small Business Saturday is a day dedicated to supporting small businesses across the country.
Founded by American Express in 2010, this day is celebrated every year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
This year, Small Business Saturday is on
November 30th.

The best photo chosen made the cover and it was from  Melissa Hyde who said, "Here is a shot that I took of Narragansett beach.  I think that it captures the essence of my hometown, Narragansett, R.I , perfectly!  Bright blue sky, crystal waters and plenty of sunshine and
sparkle!  We are so lucky to live in such a beautiful state! "

The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition

The Elf on the Shelf is a special scout elf sent from the North Pole to help Santa Claus manage his naughty and nice lists. When a family adopts an elf and gives it a name, the elf receives its Christmas magic and can fly to the North Pole each night to tell Santa Claus about all of the day's adventures. Each morning, the elf returns to its family and perches in a different place to watch the fun. Children love to wake up and race around the house looking for their elf each morning.

Elves typically appear in their families' homes at the beginning of the holiday season (around Thanksgiving)
On Christmas Eve, the elves return to the North Pole with
Santa Claus--until next year!

This is a big seller every year and this year we have both boy, and girl elves!
We are proud to feature these selected local interest titles:

Rhode Island and the Civil War: Voice from the Ocean State
by Robert Grandchamp

The Ocean State has a remarkable record of service during the Civil War. It supplied over twenty-three thousand men for the infantry, cavalry and artillery units between 1861 and 1865. From Bull Run to Appomattox and many battles along the way, including Antietam, Fredericksburg and Gettysburg, Rhode Island troops were always on the front lines. Civil War historian Robert Grandchamp lets the soldiers tell their stories in their own words, drawing from their letters to retell the accounts of those who fought and died to save the Union. From Woonsocket to Westerly, this book offers a personal connection to Rhode Island during the War Between the States through the voices of its heroic sons.

Bunker Hill
by Nathaniel Philbrick

Philbrick's books are always on the list of history buffs. This books gives a fresh look at those critical events and people involved in the revolution from 1773-1776.  The geography is familiar, as well as some of the characters, but there are many stories, and names in here not well known and he does a great job of seamlessly integrating them all into the big picture.
 It's a riveting,and detailed narrative.

Driving Mr. Yogi: Yogi Berra, Ron Guidry and Baseball's Greatest Gift by Harvey Araton

A truly wonderful story of the friendship and love of baseball shared by two Yankee legends. The glimpse into the private world of Yogi Berra and Ron Guidry was very interesting and entertaining. I've seen both gentlemen at Yankee Stadium for Old-Timer's Day and it's always been a thrill for me. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who loves baseball.

Red Hill by Jamie McGuire

When humans start to rot from the inside out and begin to rise from the dead, it's time to run.
Safety seems like and unattainable goal, but characters Scarlet, Nathen, and Miranda refuse to believe that as they try and get their family and friends away from the walking dead.
Suspenseful page turner, I loved it.

Our Featured Children's Character this month is Madeline!

In an old house in Paris that was covered with vines,
lived twelve little girls in two straight lines
They left the house, at half past nine...
The smallest one was Madeline.

So begins Ludwig Bemelmans's beloved children's story, Madeline. First published in 1939, Madeline and all five of its sequels have become classics, spawning toys, games, dolls, and even a motion picture. The original Madeline was named a Caldecott Honor Book, and the first of its sequels, Madeline's Rescue received a Caldecott Medal. What is it about this character that has endeared her to readers for more than 60 years?

                                                                             --The answer is: attitude.
