Scoop Re-Design

We've re-designed the Scoop! Please send feedback on what you like / don't like about the new format to [email protected]. Please note that most flyer images can be expanded with a click (will open a new tab). Other flyers will take you directly to the website with more information.

Moving forward, please observe the following guidelines for your Student Affairs Scoop submissions:
  • Please keep text to an absolute minimum for readability.
  • Flyers alone (with no accompanying text) are best for upcoming events.
  • Flyers should be in image format (e.g. .png or .jpeg), no longer PDF.
  • For upcoming events without flyers, please include only:
    • Title of event
    • Day, Date, Time of event
    • Location
    • Cost, if applicable (and a link to where to get tickets)
    • One to two sentence description and a link to more information
  • Write the content / text for the audience of Student Affairs.
Call for Late Night Programs

Technology Tip of the Week
by Jen O'Brien

TIP: Create a "web alias" for a shorter, more manageable URL.

FOR EXAMPLE: If I want to print and post a flyer or create an image of a flyer for social media that directs people to the Dean of Students Website, the actual URL of the website is http://miamioh.edu/student-life/student-affairs/about/leadership/office-of-dean/index.html.

But who will take the time to remember or write that down? Instead, I will create a web alias, so the short URL is www.MiamiOH.edu/DeanofStudents.

They go to the exact same place, but it's a lot easier on the eyes (and/or ears).

New Online Hosting Document

In conjunction with Miami's Lean Initiative and Conference and Event Services (CES), the Miami University Hosting Document used internally is now online! Departments will now use this link (https://miamioh.formstack.com/forms/hosting) to access and submit the form directly to the Auxiliary Business Office. This move to an online form also taps into Miami's Sustainability Initiative.

This online form will be used for all events planned through CES and must be submitted 72 hours prior to the day of the event. CES Planners will send the link to this online form when emailing the confirmation. You can also add it to your browser bookmarks for future reference.

Events requiring a hosting document not planned through a CES Planner can still access the paper Hosting Documentation Form by using this same link and selecting "no" to the first question.

For any questions regarding this new online form, please contact the Auxiliary Business Office at 513-529-5997.
Resume and Cover Letter Review

The Miami University Student Affairs Graduate Association (MUSAGA) and the Division are partnering to offer a resume and cover letter review for students in the Student Affairs in Higher Education (SAHE) program. As a way to support master's and doctoral level SAHE students as they prepare to apply for jobs, internships, and/or PhD. programs, we are seeking interested colleagues to serve as resume and cover letter reviewers.
  • If interested in serving as a reviewer, please complete this Google Form by October 30th.
    • You will be able to preference which functional area(s) you'd prefer to review.
    • SAHE students will preference one or two functional areas for which they would use their resume and cover letter after the review. The hope is to match functional areas between the SAHE students and reviewers.
  • Every effort will be made to assign each reviewer the resume(s) & cover letter(s) to accommodate your preferred amount of SAHE students to review.
  • If serving as a reviewer, you will have your assigned resume(s) and cover letter(s) to review by November 6th. We ask that you have an in-person feedback meeting with each student whose materials you review by November 25th.
Thanks for your assistance! Please contact Adam Leftin ([email protected]) or Antonio Duran ([email protected]) with any questions.

Miami Merchandise Reminder from Laura Driscoll

If you want to produce any type of merchandise - whether its uniforms, t-shirts, giveaway items, gifts, etc. - with the University's brand on it, you must use a University licensed vendor to produce it.

The University's brand is more than just logos and word marks - such as the Beveled-M or "Miami University". The brand also consists of departmental names, building names, images of campus, slogans, and any other reference that would make an individual associate the product with Miami. If you ever question whether or not a product incorporates the University's brand, please send a copy of the artwork to the Trademarks & Licensing Office for review prior to production of the product.

Below are a couple reasons why it is critical that you use a University licensed vendor to produce products that utilize Miami's brand:
  • Our licensed vendors are contractually required to uphold the University's Code of Conduct. One of the major elements of the University's Code of Conduct is that all licensed vendors must produce merchandise under fair and safe working conditions.  We don't want the University's brand or your department or organization's name to be on products that were not produced ethically.
  • Since the licensed vendors are contractually obligated to the University, they are responsible for any mistakes that they make. For example, if there is an issue with the products that you receive - whether the products are poor quality or the artwork is wrong and not what was approved - the licensed vendors are responsible for correcting the errors. If you utilize an unlicensed vendor, the University cannot hold them accountable for any mistakes, and you may get stuck paying for incorrect product.
It is always recommended to reach out to multiple licensed vendors for quotes so that you can get the products you want at the best price. Additionally, if you ever need ideas of unique giveaways that will set your department or organization apart, the licensed vendors are a great resource. They have thousands of unique products at their fingertips.

The list of Promotional Vendors are the most frequently used vendors for University departments and organizations. However, you may use any of our licensed vendors.

If you have any questions about Trademarks & Licensing, please do not hesitate to contact Laura Driscoll - Manager of Trademarks & Licensing - at [email protected] or at 513-529-8332.

SAHE Study Tour 2016 - Germany, the Czech Republic, & Poland

This year's SAHE Study Tour will take place in Central Europe-the cities of Berlin, Dresden, Prague, and Krakw. There are two ways that Student Affairs staff can participate: (1) joining us on the study tour, (2) recommending qualified undergraduate students.

For the first time, this year's tour will include undergraduate students. There will be two sections of the course-EDL390 for undergraduates and EDL690 for graduate students and professionals. If you're interested in traveling and learning along with us, we'd love to have you join us! Student affairs staff can either receive course credit or enroll as a non-credit workshop. See the EDL690 information sheet for details about the trip.

We really need your help in identifying and recruiting undergraduate students who are interested in student affairs. Specifically, we are hoping to identify undergraduate students who are in leadership roles or serve in paraprofessional positions on Miami's campus, and are considering graduate degrees and careers in the fields of student affairs and higher education. If you have qualified students to recommend, please share the EDL390 flyer with them and/or provide Mahauganee Shaw ([email protected]) with the following information: student's name, email address, year in school (i.e., junior, senior).
