Miami to Represent Ohio in Presidential Inaugural Parade
Miami University's marching band will represent Ohio in the 57th Presidential Inaugural Parade Monday, Jan. 21, 2013. The Presidential Inaugural Committee selected Miami among the first wave of participants. More than 2,800 organizations applied.
"We are honored and most proud of our marching band for receiving an invitation, and we gladly accept," said James Lentini, dean of Miami's School of Creative Arts. "It continues our amazing momentum from the Year of the Arts celebration that brought so many high-profile arts presentations to and from our Miami groups, including the marching band performance in the Macy's Parade, our recent Carnegie Hall performance, and now the Presidential Inauguration. It says a lot about the quality of our students and programs in music and the arts here at Miami, and grows our reputation as a top destination for studying the arts." READ MORE

Be in the Know -- Review Miami's Emergency Procedures
The Office of Environmental Health and Safety, the University Police, and the News and Public Information Office receive information from various offices and departments on campus. If the Miami Police or one of these offices confirms that there is an immediate threat to the health or safety of some or all of the members of the campus community, the Police and Office of News and Public Information will determine the content of the message and either or both entities will use some or all of the methods described below to communicate to the campus community or appropriate segment of the campus community. From the Parents Office
Dear Miami Parents and Family Members,
As I write this, there is another full week before classes begin. Students will arrive soon on campus to attend new classes with different instructors. Some of the students will be participating in fraternity and sorority recruitment. Others will be checking out the Career Services Center for leads on jobs and internships. This might be the semester your student decides to find a job on campus. For many, the rhythm of the semester will soon be established.
If it's the first "second semester", winter may seem a bit daunting and off rhythm on top of the preparation necessary for academic success. Winter can be especially difficult if you're from a different climate, or if you suffer from the winter blues.
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) affects many people, usually from fall through winter. During this time, people who are affected may feel a lack of energy, an unwillingness to get out of bed, a loss of interest in some activities, irritability,
weight gain, appetite changes, and a general feeling of dissatisfaction (all or a combination of these symptoms).
SAD is real.
Students may seek more information and professional help at the Student Health Services or the Student Counseling Center (both located on South Campus Avenue in the same building). Parents and Family members can be helpful by providing upbeat support and possibly a "care package" containing some favorite things or foods. If it's not possible to mail a package, e-cards are another way to bring some cheer and color into a student's day--a snail mail greeting card or note is another idea. Mostly, it's important to stay positive and share a positive attitude with your student, letting him or her know of your willingness to work together to face any challenge.
"And now we welcome the new year, full of things that have never been" --Rainer Maria Rilke
Best wishes for a New Year filled with health and success.

Prepare for Winter Weather Parking
As winter threatens to arrive in Oxford, the details about snow and parking restrictions become an issue. Particular streets in the city of Oxford are designated as Snow Emergency Routes. Vehicles left on these snow routes are subject to ticketing and towing when snowfall reaches 3 inches OR when a SNOW EMERGENCY has been declared. Each snow route has this street sign displayed multiple times along the entire length of the street. The problem becomes making certain that Miami students truly understand this restriction and pay attention to any predicted weather with snow accumulation. Please help us help your student avoid unnecessary aggravation and expensive fines. An easy way to be completely prepared for any pending weather situation is to subscribe to www.nixle.com. Snow alerts are sent to subscribers by text message and email. This system will also inform subscribers when the restriction is lifted and cars can resume street parking. Where can you park your car when it snows? During any snow emergency, Oxford residents and Miami Students are expected to remove their vehicles from designated snow emergency routes. Vehicles without a university parking permit may park in either the Ditmer Lot or the 24-hour section of the West Millett Lot during any snow emergency. Vehicles without a valid university parking permit must be removed from the campus parking lots once the snow emergency has been lifted. |

GRADES AND FERPA
Students' final grades are posted over Winter Break on BannerWeb, which students can access through the myMiami portal at www.mymiami.miamioh.edu. Grades are not mailed to students' homes, and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) restricts university communication about student records to anyone other than the student.
Students may grant family members access to their academic and other records through the myMiami for Families portal. In order to grant access, students login to myMiami and follow instructions in the Sharing Access to Your Personal Records module on the Student tab. If you have questions about FERPA, please contact the registrar's office. 513.529.8703 www.miamioh.edu/registrar
