Really?!

The world's first cell phone became available for purchase in 1984. It was called the Motorola DynaTAC and sold for $3,995.00. The inflated price today would be more than double that!

Here at TechFarmer we want to wish every one a happy Thanksgiving! To kick off the holiday season, here are some fun facts about this great time of year.

  • The Turkey was originally suggested to be our national bird instead of the  Bald Eagle by Benjamin Franklin.
  • Fossils suggest that Turkeys have been around for over 10 million years.
  • The largest Turkey on record weighed 86 pounds!
  • The first Thanksgiving lasted three years. The food served consisted of deer, fowl, Cod and various other types of fish.
New From Microsoft

Recently, Microsoft has released their newest flagship Operating System, Windows 8 along with their server operating system, Server 2012.

Microsoft went a completely new direction with Windows 8. The entire look and layout of this system has been changed into what has been referred to as the "Metro Interface." Past versions of Windows have all shared the same general layout; a desktop, a task bar at the bottom, a start button, and icons with shortcuts on the desktop. The "Metro" interface instead of having a start button, has a start page. It uses tiles and feels very similar to the interface of a Smart Phone. Another major change with Windows 8 is the fact that it best utilized with touch screen devices.

Server 2012 has added some performance features that previous versions and competing servers don't currently have. Much like Windows 8, Server 2012 will also have tiles and a
"Metro" style interface. One of the more notable advantages of this system other than its speed and efficiency is the fact that it takes many features previously only available for large enterprise businesses, such as constant availability, and makes them available for use by the small business.

As with any new software that comes out, there will be issues that arise, at TechFarmer  we recommend waiting until the first service pack release to adopt any new Operating Systems.

On paper, both of these systems have many great features and excellent performance. Much of the success of this software will depend upon how people respond to the new design and interface. As all of us at TechFarmer continue to test the new Windows operating systems, we will keep you posted on the pros and cons. Keep checking our blogs for more testing results!

Search It!

One of the main reasons that we use the web today is to gather information. This is why the era we are currently in has been termed the "Information Age." When we need an answer to a question or more info on a certain person, place, or thing, we pull up the Internet, and perform a "search" on it. We rarely connect to the internet knowing the exact web pages that contain the info that we need.

Speed has been the primary purpose behind search engines, getting us the information that we want faster, and at TechFarmer we are all about efficiency. Several of the top search engines have come up with applications that will help answer our questions almost instantly.

One of the most popular engines, Google.com, has a built in application called "One-Box." With the use of this, certain questions, equations and conversions can be typed into the search box, and the answer will be displayed by Google at the top of the page. You don't even have to open any websites. An example of a use for One-Box is converting currency.

Looking for a quick conversion? Type [number] [currency] to [currency]. If "300 USD to Peso" is typed into the search bar, Google will automatically display 200 US Dollars equaling 2607.6400 Mexican Pesos.

Curious about the time in a certain place? Google's One-Box will display the current time in any place. Type the name of the place followed by "Time."

Bing.com has similar functions. Information such as the weather can be instantly displayed by typing in the name of the city in which you wish to see the weather followed by either "weather" or "forecast." Bing will display the information before you even click the "Search" button!

Bing has another built in feature that helps the user quickly search for flights. Type in airfare in the search box and it pulls up departure and destination search options right in the search field. Pick your cities and dates and Bing will do the rest by displaying all possible combinations of flights and prices.

Yahoo.com is another very popular choice while searching the internet for content. They have added to the speed and effectiveness of searches by allowing you to search multiple topics simultaneously. Just insert "or" between the two or more topics you wish to find. For example, if you are searching local car dealerships, you could type in "Honda or Subaru or Nissan." Yahoo will pull up the top results for each of the keywords.

At TechFarmer we love these speedy ways to access information, there are many more shortcuts and tricks for using search engines, contact us and we will be happy to share our favorites.

Winter is near

After having such a warm summer and fall, winter will be a welcome change. According to the Weather Channel, last summer was not only the hottest in Colorado history, but the third hottest summer for the U.S. as a whole!
