Managing Generational Diversity
in the Workplace

According to of Bruce Tulgan, founder of Rainmaker Thinking, generational diversity has always existed in the workplace. However today, there are three distinct differences in generational diversity. First, the growing age of the Boomer generation at one end and the Millennials who are just entering the workforce at the other end have exaggerated all the "human capital management issues that track with life and career stage issues." For the oldest group, challenges that HR professionals face include flexible retention, knowledge transfer and succession planning. The benefits is that there is vast amount of knowledge, skill, wisdom, relationships and strong work ethic that companies can tap into while the older, more experienced individuals are still working. However, that value will eventually retire. 

 

For the youngest group, issues include attraction, selection, on-boarding, up-to-speed training, performance management and retention or what's called "the development investment paradox." Companies must develop young workers but the more that's invested in young talent, the greater risk that investment will move on. Advantages that Millennials can bring include energy, a new perspective and technical savvy. 

 

In the middle of  the Boomers and Millennials are what Tulgan calls the "under-management problem." Mid-level leaders tend to be in the middle of the generational spectrum and they have much of the supervisory burden. For numerous reasons there is "epidemic of under-management" coming from these leaders down the chain of command causing various problems.  Read more>
