A Misconception About
the Number of Unemployed

There is a common misconception that the number of unemployed includes only those individuals receiving Reemployment Assistance (RA) benefits. The definition of unemployed is those without a job who are actively seeking work. This would include persons who have never held a job before. Collecting RA benefits is not a requirement for being counted as unemployed. Further, those who exhaust their benefits are still considered unemployed. The number of unemployed decreases when individuals find jobs, or if they leave the labor force and are no longer seeking employment.
