Drop In Labor Force Participation Has Impact on U.S. Economy |
|
Prior to the 2007-2009 recession, 66 percent of the population (excluding military veterans, those in nursing homes or prison) over the age of 16 were in the labor force. Just four years later, that rate, known as the labor force participation rate, dropped to 63.7 percent. According to the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond's report, Where Have All the Workers Gone? - Why are more people leaving the labor force and what are they doing?, by Jesse Romero, the drop in the rate is unprecedented in the postwar area. This decease is even more surprising because it doesn't include unemployed workers actively seeking work, which are still considered part of the labor force. The report notes that while it's difficult to distinguish between the effects that demographics and the business cycle may have on labor force participation, it has important implications for the future growth of the U.S. economy.
