Good Afternoon,

I wanted to start this week by thanking to all of our members, fellow design professionals, and sponsors who attended last Friday's "Goodtime for Design" Boat Cruise and After Party at Punch Bowl Social. The weather was outstanding and nearly 400 people attended. If you weren't able to attend the event this year, I hope you can join us next year as the cruise typically takes place on the first or second Friday in June. AIA Cleveland will have a follow up on the cruise and pictures from the event posted in next week's newsletter.

On a more serious note, the recent withdrawal from the 2015 Paris climate accord has garnered overwhelming attention and response.  Regardless of this action, we know that architects are not withdrawing from their commitment to design and advocate for a more sustainable built environment. We know that designing more sustainable and resilient buildings is not only good for the environment; it's good for our clients, and it's good business.

Last week, AIA President Vonier issued a statement declaring that "the AIA will not retreat from its long-established efforts to conserve energy and to deploy renewable resources in buildings." Moreover, the international architecture community is joining with us in expressing its commitment to designing a more sustainable world.

The AIA has long been committed to fostering a more sustainable and resilient built environment by helping architects gain the skills and knowledge to design better buildings; advocate for policies that promote sustainability; and raise public awareness about the role of buildings in combating climate change. (Read all the ways you can help address climate change here.)

ADVOCACY

Would it surprise you to learn that Ohio is the only state in the country that doesn't recognize Lien Rights for architects? AIA Ohio has formed a task force to explore this subject, co-chaired by Christopher Toddy AIA Cleveland, and Terry Welker FAIA Dayton. We are presenting a series of articles on this advocacy issue of vital importance.
Here's what you can do to help, and to learn more:
  • The AIA OH Lien Rights Task Force is looking for short, compelling stories from members pertaining to the hardship of not having lien rights in Ohio or pertaining to the successes of having lien rights in other states.  Please send these to [email protected].
