This summer has been filled with great AIA Cleveland events all because of our involved and enthusiastic members. Thank you to everyone who made last week's Golf Outing a huge success. The events coming up are just as exciting, starting with 'Speakers on the Square' next Thursday. See below for more information and to register. Later this month, take advantage of a great drawing work shop with Bruce Bondy, who will provide our members with an opportunity to learn some new ideas and techniques about one of the most important steps in the design process. Since our membership is so involved with not only our chapter but many other things, we would like to connect with you all on instagram, twitter, and facebook, plus please read below about how we can make AIA Cleveland's 125th year the best one yet.

AIA Cleveland Celebrates 125 Years
|
Cleveland has had a long, rich history of architects building world class architecture. 2015 marks the 125th Anniversary of the founding of AIA Cleveland. To celebrate this milestone, AIA Cleveland is in the process of creating a legacy project, titled the Cleveland Architects Project (CAP). CAP is an ongoing and evolving research project illustrating the relationships among architects, their mentors and their protgs within the Cleveland area from the 19th through 21st centuries. The goal is to create a dynamic online diagram showing these relationships that can be utilized by architects, historians and students. The diagram will be interactive and will allow for additional information, such as significant projects and awards to be added at a later time. The results of this initial survey will be compiled into a family-tree style diagram, which will be revealed at the AIA Cleveland 125th Anniversary party in November.
We wish to include Cleveland-area architects who were owners or partners or principals of firms at any time.
Please fill out your information by CLICKING HERE so that we can ensure that our online database is accurate.
Deadline to respond is Friday, August 14.

Get Your Hands Dirty
St. Clair Design/REbuild
|
Design/REbuild is Kent State University's undergraduate architecture studio dedicated to reclaiming abandoned housing in Cleveland. This project will build on on-going efforts to reclaim vacant land in the city and explore new approaches for reinventing vacant housing. For the program's first house, the Design/REbuild studio has partnered with the St Clair Superior Development Corporation to redesign and renovate a house at 1045 E. 67th St. in the St Clair Superior neighborhood. Undergraduate architecture & interior design students worked in design studios in Spring 2014 and 2015 to reimagine the existing vacant house, and both summers the University held a construction-based Field Study to physically renovate the house. At the end of the renovation, the house will be put on the market, and the proceeds from the sale will fund the next house in the same neighborhood.
Volunteer to help complete the project: Earn IDP hours and gain hands-on experience through building/doing. With 6 volunteer weekends, AIA volunteers would be working alongside faculty and student volunteers on a range of tasks such as final framing, drywall, insulation, painting, fixtures, cabinetry, landscape, metal canopy, MEP. You can come to all, one, or even a fraction of a day to be a part of the project.
What to do if interested: Email Kristen Zeiber (Urban Planner | CUDC) kzeiber@kent.edu to be put on the project email list.
Check www.design-rebuild.org for schedules and updates.
The project is generously funded by the George Gund Foundation, with support from VIP Renovation, Inc.

Trends & Ideas in Dorm Bathroom Design
Tuesday, August 11
|
Course Description:
The movement in student residences is to develop and build more apartment-style housing, with a bathroom shared by 2-4 students. The goal is to create more of a "normal" residential feel vs. the larger cadre-style dorms with two residents per room and a multi-user bathroom.
The challenge faced by many colleges and universities is they have numerous cadre-style dorms that still have plenty of useful life. This leads to another trend where schools undertake remodeling and renovations to not only freshen and modernize the bathrooms, but also to bring them up to code.
This course focuses on dormitory bathroom design, including disability accommodation, bather privacy, the problems of mold, mildew and hygiene, and material and product alternatives to help keep bathrooms and showers cleaner.
Learning Objectives
1. Integrate accommodation and universal design principles to dormitory bathroom design.
2. Explain key challenges faced in bathroom design regarding accommodation, privacy, the fight against mold, and the cleanliness and hygiene in the space.
3. Master the characteristics of solid surface as a material choice for both new construction or renovation of dorm bathrooms.
4. Employing other tips, tactics and techniques to thwart poor dorm resident hygiene.
