Why Proofing Is Important
Proofing is an important part of your training because it teaches your dog how NOT to perform an exercise. When you proof you are setting up common distractions that might cause your dog to incorrectly perform an exercise in the ring. Causing an incorrect response in training gives you the opportunity to communicate to your dog that his/her response is incorrect. It's a teaching opportunity to remind your dog of how to do the exercise correctly. Proof at home, proof in class, proof at matches; proof thoughtfully with a gradual progression from easy to hard distractions. And only proof if you are absolutely sure your dog understands the exercise and how to perform it properly.
