Rudy's Blog....Playing with the big dogs

I played with the big dogs this weekend at my first NAHRA master level test. We had so much fun!  It was grand!  When you play with the big dogs you have to be able to really remember where the birds are because there's three of them on the land and on the water - THREE!  And you have to trust your human when you are sent for another bird you don't see fall, and you have to run in a straight line and listen and follow directions if you start to run in a squiggly line.  Plus you have to sit still until you are sent, come right back and hold the bird until you are asked to give it up, and there's no happy dancing with the bird - no matter how happy you are.

Well, it's hard work when you have to follow stupid human rules.  It would be easier if dogs made the rules but if we want to have fun, make the humans happy, get lots of 'good boys' and treats and more birds and like hearing people clap their hands for us, then we have to follow the stupid human rules.  Plus you get to do a happy dance when you're all finished.  I don't like the ribbons so much because you can't eat them or dance with them.

Whenever we play with birds it's always a GRAND time!  And playing with the big dogs is the GRANDEST because there are lots of birds!!

 Kudos to the AKC

Most of us have a love/hate relationship with the AKC. Occasionally, however they do come up with a good idea.  Their new advanced level Canine Good Citizen program;  Comunity Canine (CGCA) is one of their better ideas.

Designed to test real life skills in real life situations, it's going to be a challenging test to pass.  Mastery of the skills required means that folks are going to have to get out of their living rooms and backyards and train with real life distractions!

BRDS' Family Manners III class on Wednesday evenings at 7:30 has the CGCA test as its core concept and will offer the test on week 8 of the class.  I can't wait to introduce everyone to the fun and rewards of real life training and the adventures of training in new places!!!
