X Marks the Spot
The X Drill is a great way to teach and maintain depth perception and only requires six bumpers or birds and one training buddy.
Have your helper sit or stand out in the field. He/she is in the middle of the X. With your dog sitting in heel position, have your helper throw a bumper angle in to your left and send your dog. When your dog returns have your helper throw the next bumper angle back to your right and send your dog. The next bumper is thrown angle in to your right. The fourth bumper is thrown angle back to your left. Finish up by drawing a line through the X and have your helper throw a fifth bumper flat to your right and when your dog returns throw a sixth flat to your left. Naturally, send your dog for each bumper before the next is thrown.
This is a marking drill and doesn't require a gun shot. For young dogs use bumpers, a cut field and keep the distance short. For more advanced dogs you can use a field with light cover and birds.
In addition to depth perception and marking skills there are other important concepts being taught; running through scent and running tight to the gun.
It's an all purpose drill that's useful for all levels of training.
The New Face of APDT Rally
In case you haven't heard, APDT Rally is now World Cynosport Rally. The USDAA purchased APDT Rally effective Jan. 1.
World Cynosport Rally will continue to use the current rules and regulations and all titles previously earned will be recognized. One of the USDAA's goals for World Cynosport Rally is a world championship tournament, the finals of which will be held at the USDAA's annual Cynosport World Games.
World Cynosport Rally recently announced the formation of an Advisory Board to represent the interests of exhibitors, trial hosts and officials, maintain continuity and make recommendations for future improvement and development.
