School Board Brief
Oregon Trail School District
Board of  Directors meeting October 8, 2012
Student & Staff Highlights

Superintendent Bayer would have liked to share the following great news at our October 8 meeting - but it was embargoed by the Oregon Department of Education until October 11.

MODEL SCHOOL ANNOUNCED!

The Oregon Department of Education announced that Sandy Grade School has earned Model School designation - ranking in the top 5% of Title 1 schools in the state.

In 2010 Sandy Grade implemented a high-level professional development program in partnership with School Rise Enlightened Teaching and the Regie Routman in Residence program. The training has focused on teacher collaboration and improved literacy instruction, and the results are now evident in the outstanding achievement of our students!

Congratulations to Sandy Grade staff for their hard work and dedication!

A preliminary list released in August designated Naas Elementary as a Model School. Kelso Elementary and Oregon Trail Primary Academy also ranked at the highest level, however, because they are not Title 1 schools, they could not receive the state's Model School designation.

School Lunch Program

The Board approved a $5 fee on prepaid school meal accounts when students are withdrawn from the district. When students are withdrawn, for a variety of reasons including graduation or family relocation, there is often a residual balance remaining in the student's prepaid meal account. Approximately 90% of the balances are under $5. If a balance is $5 or less the fee will be assessed up to $5 with no refund. If a balance is over $5 the refund will be the balance minus the $5 fee.

Transportation

First Student Transportation Manager Pamela Botts reported:

  • 73% of our students are transported
  • There are 54 buses in the fleet and 56 drivers
  • Drivers have been trained in Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS)
  • First Student staff and school principals continue to assess routes and schedules
