Mastery in many fields is recognized by learning a baseline skill set, demonstrating that skill, and then staying current by getting CEUs (Continuing Education Units). Generally, watching a movie or reading an article will earn far fewer CEUs than going to an event that combines content and live-time practice.
I would say that one earns life mastery through these CEUs: Communicate, Educate, Understand.
CommunicateWhat do you want? What DON'T you want? What timing?
When a decision point is presented, the communication usually begins internally. How often do you stop and wait for an answer? If you do, that is great. For those who do, how often do you actually pay attention to the answer given? Has that ever been vetoed by the thought of what you "should" do, or even "what they want me to do"?
Working with the breath establishes and/or enhances the relationship with yourself and your own voice. By engaging in a practice that gives the mind something else to do besides bombard you with the same messages over and over, you get a chance to hear something new. Also by tapping into the parasympathetic side of the nervous system (the rest / digest side) you turn down the chemical responses of the "fight or flight" side and actually buy some time to think.
EducateYou won't learn to ride a bike by watching Ross & Phoebe on "Friends". You will simply get an idea.
It may sound obvious, but with so much "stuff" on the internet, remembering to get good sound instruction can get lost. Depending on what you are looking to do, hands on experiences may be best. If you aren't sure about a good source for education, ask someone who may share your interests. Often word of mouth referrals are really solid.
In a session, we certainly work with content and have conversation, but being with you allows me to see exactly how your body moves and how the breath moves in you. This allows for specific / timely feedback and interventions to enhance your learning.
UnderstandWhen you encounter something new, or even familiar, understand how your body might send you information about what it feels. Add this to what your mind and thoughts are suggesting. Learn to understand the difference between that excited feeling and the all important "uh oh" feeling. Are there times when the body might send misleading signals to the brain? You bet. However, the body can also send the balancing message. Will you hear it, or will your patterned thoughts cover that over?
In time working with breath is going to increase your ability to "hear" the message from the body. You can also use the breath to quiet ongoing thoughts in your mind. The practice then lets you determine what is really going on.
Let's get started on those CEUs today.
Mastery can be yours. The subject matter is you.
