New Development Standard Enforcement. In December 2016, the Board approved a new Development Standard regarding the height of shrubs located near a driveway within close proximity to the sidewalk which could possibly block line of sight if someone is exiting a driveway.
No shrub or planting which significantly obstructs sight lines of persons exiting a driveway in an automobile, golf car or the like, shall be allowed. Such shrubs must be pruned to a height of 42" or less to allow a safe exit. Development Standard Section 2.17.c.vii.
In order to give residents ample time to inspect their front landscaping for this situation and trim the shrubs, no violation will be sent for three months on this matter. Beginning May 1, the 42" height rule will be enforced. Please check your shrubs so that the line of sight is not obscured by the height of your bushes and take action to prune them.
It's that time again for the NW Explorer newspaper's voter-based "Best of the Northwest" contest. Our community, golf course and restaurant have placed first or runner-up over the last several years. Help us continue our winning streaks! Click here to vote. (Note you will need to create an account that takes just a few seconds to do) Please vote in all categories: Retirement Living (Best Active Adult Living), Sports & Recreation (Best Golf Course) and Food & Drink (Best Breakfast AND Best OV Restaurant).
A Plea from the NPC: Are you interested in keeping our community beautiful, and do you take pride in living here? If so, the Neighborhood Pride Committee (NPC) could use you as a member. It takes 3-4 hours a month to serve on the committee. Owning a golf cart is not necessary, but it would be helpful. If you are interested and would like to join us, or of you have any questions, call Tempe Johnson 825-6994, or Katy Mosier, Staff Liaison, 917-8058.

It's the Law: Oro Valley Has a New Distracted Driving Ordinance. Effective January 6, 2017, the Town of Oro Valley is a "hands-free" town, meaning drivers are not allowed to hold a cellular phone or other electronic mobile device while operating a motor vehicle. This ordinance also applies to drivers stopped at a red light. Exceptions to this ordinance include 911 emergency calls and calls to a hospital or physician's office. Click here for details.
Safety is priority: Our community is relatively safe but we shouldn't be lulled into a sense of false security. Residents should continue to lock their doors at home and don't leave your keys or valuables in your cars. Report any suspicious activity to the police.
Dog Droppings: Recently we have had many complaints by walkers regarding animal waste appearing on the sidewalks in addition to the issue of people walking dogs and allowing them to go on private property. Town ordinance 18-3-4 (Dog Waste Removal) states: "It is a civil infraction for the owner or person having custody of any dog to fail to immediately remove and dispose of, in a sanitary manner, any solid waste deposited by such dog on public property and/or on any private property without the consent of the person in control of the property." Fines range from $25-$250. Please respect your community and your neighbors' property by picking up after your dog.
Pool Closure at AFC. Excessive wind caused us not to be able to cover the pool at the AFC for a few days. This along with freezing temperatures at night has had the pool heaters running constantly. The pool temperature is at 78 degrees right now. This is not a healthy temperature for most people to be in the water for a long period of time. With that said, in order to warm the pool up faster, the pool will be closed ALL of Monday, January 30. Covering the pool for 24 hours will help in bringing up the temperature of the water. We are sorry for any inconvenience

ILR Sampler Presentation on Thursday February 2 in Catalina Vista at 2:00 p.m. titled "Why should we remember the Protestant Reformation?" 2017 marks the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation when the Augustinian friar Martin Luther challenged Roman Catholic doctrines. The presenter is Dr. Sally Karant-Nunn, Director of the Division for Late Medieval and Reformation Studies and Regents' Professor of History at the University of Arizona. She has authored six books and numerous scholarly articles as well as being one of six international Luther experts interviewed by PBS for a documentary on the Reformation. Reminder: This lecture is free and open to all in Sun City, but, seating is limited by order of the Fire Marshall. Lately, we have had to turn people away due to this rule. More information is available on our website.
Consumer Alert: A national real estate association has warned that some realtors have persuaded some home sellers to list their homes at a low price so that the real estate agent can have a quick sale. Always seek input and suggestions from two to four Realtors before listing your home for sale.
Mata Ortiz Pottery and Zapotec Rug Show: this Saturday, January 28, 8 AM-4 PM and Sunday, January 29, 10 AM-3 PM in the Native American rooms at the Activity Center. Jointly sponsored by SCOV and the Spanish Cultural Club. Come to look and learn about the beautiful artwork, maybe even buy something. We hope that we can do charge card sales, but cash and a check are a sure thing. Questions: Gary or Carolyn Lerch 818-3319.
Missing newspapers: A resident asked us to pass along information about Arizona Daily Star delivery. If your paper is missing, please contact the carrier directly rather than calling the newspaper's customer service department. The newspaper charges the carrier $10 for each missing paper complaint.
Interesting tidbit: Our golf course water conservation and usage is the best around. The Views Golf Course in 2016 used 1,313,000 gallons less water than the next closest conservative golf course in the area. In fact, we used an average of 26,247,250 gallons less than other courses in our area. Our golf course is irrigated with reclaimed water. If you see golf course superintendent Michael Kropf, please let him know that you know what a great job he is doing.
Getting to know the GM: The largest and most prestigious HOA organization in the world is Community Associations Institute or CAI. I sit on two national committees at CAI: 1. The Government Affairs Committee, and 2. The Large Scale Managers Committee. In addition, I am the President of the Central Arizona Chapter of CAI (over 700 members) for the second time. Being active in this association allows me to be up to date on the latest and greatest in the industry which in turn helps Sun City Oro Valley. P.S., I'm still loving it here and appreciate being able to serve you. Thank you!!!
