This Week in SCOV
_____________________________________________________________
9/17/15

Website Launch:  We are anticipating the launch of our new website on Wednesday, September 23.  A notification email will be sent out when it becomes live.  After over a year of development and testing we are exciting to bring the new site to our residents.

Café/Lounge and pro shop projects: The Café/Lounge project was planned to be presented to the Board for approval at the Board Meeting on Tuesday, September 22. However, the contractors are having difficulties getting sub-contractor bids in the short time-line given. As a result, this project will be presented to the Board at the Special Board Meeting on Thursday, September 24 or at subsequent Special Board Meeting, if necessary. The goal is to get the most competitive bid from a reputable contractor rather than rush the process.

The pro shop project continues to come along well. We are still told by the contractor that it will be completed in time for the golf course opening after overseeding.

Political signs: Here's a reminder that regardless of sign restrictions in the Association's CC&Rs, State statute overrides those restrictions allowing residents to place political signs on their private property. Political signs may be placed on residential lots in SCOV up to 71 days prior to an election and up to three days after an election. There is no restriction on the number of signs but the total area of all political signs on a lot cannot exceed nine square feet. Usually this size restriction results in one sign being placed on a lot. State statute also allows political signs to be placed on street right-of-ways as I'm sure you've noticed. The regulations for signs in the right-of-way areas is different than the regulations for homeowners associations. Again, as you have seen, larger signs are allowed in the right-of-way than those on residential lots.

Also, Arizona law lays out penalties for damaging campaign signs - You may have seen the damage to some of the political signs along Rancho Vistoso.  The damage has not gone unnoticed by officials.  If you witness the destruction of signage, please contact the police.  More information may be found here.

AFC paper towels: The volume of paper towels that are being used in the AFC is excessive. This is a huge cost to you, the homeowners. An alternative to using the paper towels is the very efficient electric hand dryers. Please give the dryers a chance and use them as they work very well and will save you money.

Pickleball stairs: Now that many of the pickleball players are coming back from their summer locations, I thought it might be a good idea to bring to your attention that new stairs and handrails have been added for access from the AFC area to the pickleball courts. This was accomplished through a joint venture with the Association and Pickleball Club sharing the cost.

The Board invites you: The Board of Directors wants to invite you to each and every Study Session and Board Meeting. Your thoughts and input are important and one of the best ways to be heard is by attending these monthly meetings. In addition, to this invitation the Board would like you to stop by the meetings 15 minutes before the meetings begin so you and the Board Members can have an opportunity for a casual conversation. This pre-meeting period will give you an opportunity to have one-on-one time with Board Members so you can either talk about light social issues or an Association related issue that may be very important to you. The combined Study Session and Board Meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 22 at 9 AM in the Welcome Center, Conference Room 3. Please stop by a little early.

Mesa Flea Market Bus Trip, Friday, October 9: Time to start shopping for the holidays! Join us on a luxury bus trip to the Mesa Flea Market. Why drive when you can take a bus. The market is filled with hundreds of vendors with great selections of new items.  It's a fun day for all. There are food vendors to buy lunch. If you buy a large item you can take it home on the bus. The bus will leave at 8:30 am from SCOV and leave the market at 3 PM to return. Why not stop by the Café and get a coffee and sweet treat or breakfast sandwich to eat on the bus? There will be only one luxury bus that seats 38, so get your tickets early. Tickets are on sale at the Welcome Center. See Coco or Pam for tickets $20/pp

Oro Valley Mayor/Council vote: Here's a reminder that in order to be eligible to vote in the upcoming Mayor/Council election, you must be a registered voter in Oro Valley. Simply owning a home in Oro Valley will not qualify you to vote in an Oro Valley election regardless of whether you are or are not registered somewhere else.

Gabriel Ayala is an Emmy-nominated performer. The residents of SCOV always ask for his trio to appear. If you have never heard this trio, you will be very surprised at the great show they put on. Gather some friends for cabaret seating. Bring your own drinks and snacks. Ice will be provided. Tickets on sale at the Welcome center or at the door, $15.pp. If paying at the door please have correct change or a check payable to SCOV. The Café will have the beverage cart on site to sell beer and wine and treats. Also, dinner will be served in the Café prior to the performance.

SCOV is a Pet-Friendly Community
Sun City Oro Valley is proud to be a pet-friendly community with a clean and comfortable living environment for everyone - and their pets - to call home. After all, we understand that sometimes your pets feel more like family! For those of you who consistently clean up after your pet, thank you. On behalf of your fellow residents, we appreciate your consideration and responsibility. However; others in our community neglect to pick up after their pets. And it is a trend that is becoming worse.
In that spirit, we need your help. Here's how you can pitch in:
  • If you don't already, please carry supplies when walking your pet in the neighborhood.
  • If you see a pet owner who doesn't have a bag, offer them one of yours.
  • Pick up solid waste and take it with you.
  • Leaving waste-containing bags in other's yards is not appreciated. Dispose of bags properly.
  • Additionally, dogs are to be on leash any time they are off your property. Unleashed dogs jumping on other residents and/or other pets are not typically welcome.
Thank you for your help to keep SCOV a great pedestrian (two and four legged) neighborhood.

Please be aware of the following FOUR phone scams that have been hitting the Tucson area lately...
1. A call to state you have just won a million (or more) dollars, just press a button or wait for the operator to tell them more.
2. Someone saying, "Hi grandma or grandpa" and telling you that they are in trouble and need money.
3. A call letting you know that you have failed to appear for jury duty and if they do not call back to the phone number provided, an officer will come to their house to arrest them.
4. Someone asking you for your personal information pretending to be from a bank, a utility company, or credit card business.
The targets of these calls are often those who are retired and/or older and who may not think that the call is a scam. Those in Pima County can visit the Tucson Police phone scam page for more information:

Cart stickers: Have you picked up your 2015-16 sticker for your Facility Access Card or golf cart yet? Stop by the Administration office between 7:30 AM and 4:30 PM to pick yours up today.

Oro Valley road work in SCOV: The following information was received from the Town regarding road work to be completed in Units 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 15 & 18:

Crews will be on site from 7:30 a.m. till 3 p.m. Monday thru Friday.  Further information will be given to you when a contractor has a contract with the Town of Oro Valley to perform the work.  Additional information and maps can be found on the Town's website under projects.
