April 9, 2015

Golf Course Walking Time Change: Well it appears we've had a little communication breakdown between departments. As a result, the times for walking on the golf course will once again change. Effective Friday, April 10th walking will be allowed until 6:30 a.m. when golf begins. Walkers may then be out on the course after 6:00 p.m. until May 1st at which time the evening walking will be moved back to 6:30 p.m. I apologize for any confusion these time changes may cause.

Golf Course Walking only till 7 a.m. on Tuesday, April 14th: There will be golf in the morning and afternoon on Tuesday, April 14th. As a result, walkers must be off the course by 6:30 a.m.
Walking on the course will be allowed after 6:30 p.m. on April 14th.
When walking on the golf course it is safer if you walk in the same direction that the golfers are playing. This direction allows the walkers to be behind the golfers with the golf balls traveling away from the walkers. Walkers should always remember that the golfers have the right-of-way.

Proposed Café and Lounge Project Presentation for Residents, Saturday, April 25, 2PM, Auditorium: The Long Range Planning Committee will present its proposal for creation of a lounge in the area currently occupied by the Pro Shop, which is being relocated.  Why is a lounge being created?   What will it look like?  What is its importance to the community?  How will it be paid for?  This presentation, requested by the Board of Directors, will answer those questions and more.  Committee members will discuss the reasons for and process involved in creating the proposal, and the architect will present his drawings.  Resident questions are invited and can be submitted immediately following the presentation or in advance by emailing Leslie Platt at bplatt38@comcast.net.

Inspection Help Needed: The Architectural Review Committee (ARC) needs your help. When a home is listed in SCOV, volunteers from the ARC inspect the property to best assure that everything on the exterior of the home is in compliance with the Development Standards. If you have some knowledge or just an interest in helping out on a volunteer basis, the ARC would truly appreciate a little of your time each month. There is no requirement to attend meetings on a regular basis, only inspections as needed and possibly an occasional meeting when an issue may arise from an inspection. If you're interested, please contact Katy Mosier at kmosier@suncityorovalley.com

Leaving For The Summer? If you are leaving for the summer and want your mail sent somewhere besides your SCOV address, you are required to submit that change to us IN WRITING OR THROUGH OUR ONLINE FORM. This is a new procedure to assure that we are all on the same page. If you would like to submit via an online form, log into the members only section of the website you will find the form there. Otherwise, please stop by the Administration Office and ask for the Change of Address form.

Fall Prevention Event: As your SCOV Active Health Committee, we are pleased to present information that promotes Healthy Lifestyles. As we age, falling becomes a bigger concern due to the potential for injury. On Friday, April 17, 1 PM, Activity Center Auditorium, Ruth Taylor-Piliae, PhD, RN, FAHA, will do a presentation on Fall Prevention.  The content will include Creating a Safe Environment and an Interactive Session to Improve Balance by learning a few simple Tai Chi movements. Dr. Taylor-Piliae is an Associate Professor in the College of Nursing at the University of Arizona; her research focus is to increase physical activity for people with cardiovascular disease, including stoke, by using innovative physical activities. She is also an athlete who is running the marathon in the Arizona Distance Classic! The presentation is free but you need to obtain a ticket to attend at the Welcome Center starting on March 23. Beverages will be provided. If you are interested in joining this committee, or have suggestions for topics and/or presenters, email the chair janyce.lundstedt@gmail.com.

New water meters boxes: If you have any issues with or complaints about the new water meters boxes that are being installed by the Town, please send your input to jkane@orovalleyaz.gov

Shred-It Event: It's that time again - tax time! The Foundation is sponsoring a Shred-It day to help you clear out all those unnecessary documents. The Shred-It truck will be in the Activity Center Parking Lot between 9 and 11 AM on Saturday, April 18, 2014. Please bring all your sensitive personal documents in plastic or paper bags for shredding. Please, no magazines, newspaper, or junk mail! This service is to assist the residents of SCOV with correct disposal of old financial records, old checks, or any items with Social Security or Bank account numbers. This service is for SCOV residents only-you will be asked to show your SCOV identity card upon arrival. Proper shredding helps prevent identity theft. "

Sidewalk ownership correction: A recent reminder about maintaining our sidewalks stated that "We each own the sidewalk adjacent to our home, so it is the responsibility of the homeowner to have it repaired". We do not own our sidewalks. The Town of Oro Valley owns the sidewalks. However, Town Code 7-5-10: Repair of Sidewalk by Abutting Owners says that the owner of property immediately abutting a sidewalk is responsible for maintaining that sidewalk "in good order and repair."

Library Volunteers and Speaker: Do you love books and movies? Are you looking for a stimulating way to spend six hours each month? The Library is looking for volunteers who have good people skills and are somewhat knowledgeable about computers. Contact Kate Cusumano at kcusumano@suncityorovalley.com for more information.

Author Harvey Ferguson will speak about his newly released book, The Last Cavalryman, on Wednesday, April 22, at 1:30 PM in the Welcome Center Conference Room 3. Admission free, tickets required and are available in the Library. Contact the Library for more details.

SCOV Blood Drive: When asked why he gave blood, a gentleman said, "...because blood is like a parachute. If it's not there when you need it, chances are you'll never need it again." SCOV's blood drive is Thursday, April 16, 9-11 AM, Auditorium. Schedule an appointment by calling the Red Cross 1-800-448-3543 or by visiting redcrossblood.org.

Help Wanted, Monitor: One of our long time monitors, Glen Schnell, has announced his retirement. With Glen's departure we will be in need of another monitor. If you are interested in this paying position please contact Pam Sarpalius at 917-8077 and pick up a copy of the "monitor job description." Working part time is a great way to make some extra money without leaving the community. The position starts at minimum wage, $8.05 an hour.

Bees: If you see a swarm of bees somewhere in the common area, we want to know about it so we can do our best to restrict the area. What may be expected is that we'll immediately have the bees removed. However, bees will often look like they are forming a hive when they are just looking for a new place to form a hive. They will land somewhere for two to four days and leave when the scout bees find the right place for their new hive. So, unless a bee swarm has been in a location for typically more than four days, we won't have the swarm removed. If everyone will simply stay away from the bees and wait a few days, all will work out well.

Tissue use in restrooms: Recently there has been a huge surge in tissues used from the restrooms. For example, last weekend 25 boxes of tissues were gone. We don't know if they were simply taken somehow or used by individuals in mass. The important point is that if this high level of tissue use doesn't stop, we may have to discontinue providing tissues.

Desert Oasis pool closure: The Desert Oasis pool will be closed next week ( April 15th,16th and 17th) for a repair to the main drain cover. To do this, 3/4th of the pool must be drained. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your understanding.
