Questions, comments, etc. regarding This Week's SCOV Report: If you have a question, comment or other response that you would like to make regarding an item in this report, you may reply to this message. Depending on the nature of your response (comment, question, etc.), I will acknowledge your reply, answer your questions or take other appropriate action(s) in as timely a manner as possible.

Pickleball/Bocce Ball:The pickleball courts are complete; however, the surfacing must cure for three or four days prior to using them. So, they should be usable by Friday or Saturday. The Bocce Ball courts are still in process. The contractor tried to glue the carpet down on the courts but there is still too much moister in the concrete for the glue to adhere. Depending on the weather, which looks like rain, the carpet may or may not be able to be glued down for the next couple of days. Once the carpet is down and the rubber bumpers are glued to the curbs, the courts will be ready for play.

Heroes Among Us Nominations Sought: The Board of Directors is requesting residents to submit candidates for the "Heroes Among Us" award. This award is designed to honor residents who make remarkable contributions to our community. Nominations should be submitted by January 16 - click here and complete the form. The Board will review the nominees and select the recipient(s). The award will be presented at the Sun City Oro Valley Annual Meeting in March.

Carolyn Lerch (2010); Richard Golombek (2010); Bob Cratty (2011); Leslie Platt (2012);
Dave Johnson (2013); Fred & Sharon Krohn (2014).

Sun City Oro Valley Legend Retires: Yes, it is true.  After 28 years serving our community Norma Meyers is planning on retiring the end of January. She started with Del Webb in 1986
even before Rancho Vistoso Blvd. existed.  Norma has helped literally thousands of residents answering questions, issuing our community cards, selling tickets to events, and making everyone's day with a friendly greeting, dry wit and trying to convince people there is the
outline of an" Indian in a canoe" on top of the Catalina Mountains. Won't you join us on January 20th from 2-4 PM in Activity Center Auditorium? We will honor Norma for her years of service and celebrate her pending retirement. Be thinking of "Norma Memories" that you can share as you wish Norma good luck in her retirement. Special note cards will be provided for you to write down your memories. We will be binding these together as a keep sake for Norma.

Dispose-A- Med: Empty your medicine cabinet and bring your unused or expired prescriptions, over the counter medications, vitamins/supplements to the Sun City Activity Center and dispose of them properly. The Oro Valley Police and the Sun City Community Foundation will be there from 9 AM to 11 AM to accept the above items. Our next Dispose-A-Med will be on Tuesday, March 10th.

Gift Shop Monday Madness: The Gift Shop will have their Monday Madness sale on February 9th from 9 AM-12:30 PM. There are always great bargains waiting for you on the tables set up in front the shop. With Valentine's Day so close it is a perfect to time to come on down and find something special.

Proposed Paint Colors: If you haven't voted yet please do so. Voting for your favorites will be coming to a close on January 15th. The information you are providing will be used in preparing the final paint color recommendations that will be presented to the Board for their approval. The Committee thanks you in advance for your participation.

News from the AFC

  • Training: Ray Jerkins will be giving one hour classes for the Free Motion equipment on Tuesday, January 20th at 7:00 a.m. and for the TRX equipment on Wednesday, January 21st at 8 a.m.
  • Have some thoughts/suggestions: The AFC Committee has placed a suggestion box in the AFC for those of you who have suggestions. In addition to the suggestion box, the committee now has an email address that you can send you suggestion to which is afc@suncityorovalley.com
  • Phones for emergencies: As a reminder, there are two phones that are easily accessible for 911 emergency calls. One is in the fitness center hallway and the other is in the pool area. Please remember to dial 8 first then 911. There are address cards by both phones so if/when you're asked for the address, you can give them the proper location.

Town's purchase of El Conquistador news: Some of the SCOV residents think that the Town's purchase of the El Conquistador Golf and Tennis Club is a done deal. That is not true. It is true that the purchase was approved by the Town Council on December 17, 2014 by a vote of 4 (Mayor Satish Hiremath, Vice Mayor Lou Waters and Council members: Mary Snider and Joe Hornat in favor) to 3 (Council members: Mike Zinkin, Bill Garner and Brendan Burns opposed). However, when Oro Valley resident Shirl Lamonna filed the paperwork for a referendum petition at 9 AM on December 18, 2014, the Town had to suspend the purchase. Signatures will continue to be collected in the Activity Center through January 14th as posted. Petitions will be delivered to Town Hall at 4 PM on Thursday, December 15th (one day earlier than required). Supporters are encouraged to be at the Town Center at that time. The Town Clerk then has up to 20 days to validate the signatures (a 5% random sample). Then the petitions are sent to the County Recorder for further validation and the County has up to 15 days to complete. It is my understanding that a referendum election would be held in May, 2015.

Receiving the GEM award has, once again, proved that this remarkable course continues to carry on its reputation as one of Tucson's "hidden gem" golf courses. CONGRATULATIONS!

Solar Power Proposal: The Properties Committee is in the process of thoroughly evaluating the installation of solar panels to produce about 60% of the required electrical power for the common area facilities. This type of system would include a fixed electrical cost which would result in substantial savings over many years. In order to implement the type of system that is under investigation, long-term contracts will be required. As was the case with the AT&T cell site in the Clock Tower, these type of contracts require a membership vote to provide the Board with authority to enter into the contracts. On Wednesday, January 28th at 1 PM a forum will be held in the Auditorium to explain the solar proposal and to answer your questions. If the Board agrees that this matter should be voted on by the membership, this vote will be included in the balloting this March along with the Board of Directors election and Articles of Incorporation amendment vote.

Open House for Oro Valley Police Department: In an effort to meet and recognize the service and protection that the Oro Valley Police Department provides for the citizens of Oro Valley, there will be an Open House tomorrow, Friday, January 9th from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Council Chambers.
