Questions, comments, etc. regarding This Week's SCOV Report: If you have a question, comment or other response that you like to make regarding an item in this report, you may reply to this message. Depending on the nature of your response (comment, question, etc.), I will acknowledge your reply, answer your questions or take other appropriate action(s) in as timely a manner as possible.

Café food and drink till 6 PM: The Café is not just for breakfast and lunch. Stop by late afternoon sometime and enjoy a full bar and munchies such as hot dogs, limited appetizers and various snacks.

Committee Volunteers Sought:Each year in March we begin looking for residents to serve on our many committees. This is vital work in the operation of our Association and each individual has something to offer. Please consider joining a committee by completing an application. Click Here to complete an application.

Pickleball Courts:The Board approved construction of three new pickleball courts and four new bocce ball courts at the last Board Meeting. The Strategic Projects Committee recommended that in order to fit three courts in the area where the current bocce ball courts exists, all three courts would have to be oriented east/west. However, when reviewing the plans, it was found that in essentially the same footprint two courts could be oriented north/south, which is the preferred orientation and one court could be oriented east/west. The Pickleball Club was surveyed on this issue and overwhelming supported the construction of two courts oriented north/south and one court oriented east/west.

Celebrate the Town of Oro Valley's 40th anniversary: On Thursday, March 13, the Government Affairs Committee will present a program in honor the 40th Anniversary of founding of the Town of Oro Valley.  The program will include a historical re-enactor Karen Board Moral who will portray Clara Fish Roberts, the first woman to register to vote in Pima County.  She will share the story of the early days of Tucson, including a perspective of the Pusch family of Oro Valley. In Addition, Dick Eggerding, local historian and Co-founder of the Oro Valley Historical Society, will share the history of the founding of Oro Valley, including the opposition of Pima County, Tucson, and some politicians and local residents.  The program will be held in the Activity Center/Navajo Room at 1 PM.

Arizona Distance Classic:Which Sun City club will have the greatest representation at the Arizona Distance Classic on March 23?  Will it be the Hiking Club (a natural choice), Energetic Exercisers (They ARE energetic.), one of the dance groups, or Zumba?  What about the Sun City Singers, the Ukulele Club, or the Art League? There could be some surprises.  We only hope to have a better representation than Splendido which is sponsoring the Senior Walk.  This is a charity race benefitting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and with the Active Health Committee's endorsement will cost you only $5 (and you get a race t-shirt and some snacks afterward.)  Contact Ruth Coleman or Stan Shopa for details:  grandmaruthc@gmail.com or shopa@maplenet.net

Feeding the Brain Event: You won't want to miss the Active Health presentation on Friday, March 21 at 1 PM in the auditorium. Lee Ryan, a professor of psychology and neurology at the University of Arizona and the Evelyn F. McKnight Brain Institute will talk about "Feeding the Brain: Enhancing Cognitive Function through Food." There is no charge for this Active Health event but be sure to pick up a raffle ticket on your way in for a chance to win a door prize.

The Board invites you: The Board of Directors wants to invite you to each and every Study Session and Board Meeting. Your thoughts and input are important and one of the best ways to be heard is by attending these monthly meetings. In addition, to this invitation the Board would like you to stop by the meetings 15 minutes before the meetings begin so you and the Board Members can have an opportunity for a casual conversation. This pre-meeting period will give you an opportunity to have one-on-one time with Board Members so you can either talk about light social issues or an Association related issue that may be very important to you. The March Study Session will be held on March 13th at 9 a.m. in the Welcome Center, Conference Room 3 so please stop by a little early.

Help Wanted: Want to turn some free time into cash? We are looking for a monitor to work Saturday mornings at the Welcome Center and occasionally at the AFC. If you would like more details, contact Pam Sarpalius at 520-917-8077.

Board Election: Here's a quick reminder to vote for your favorite candidates. Also, please be sure to mail your ballot or place it in the ballot box located in the Welcome Center.

Vendor Problem: A few of our residents have had issues with Stephen Michael Mendoza. I don't have any further information than the following; however, if you're interested in the proceedings that have taken place with Mr. Mendoza, you can log on to the Arizona Attorney General's web site and find Case Number: CR2014-0374.

Sign in for Swimming Lanes at AFC: If you are new to SCOV you may not be aware of an AFC pool procedure. If you want to swim or walk in a lap lane you will need to sign up for it upon your arrival to the pool area. Outside of the spa and locker room entrances there is a sign-up sheet on a desk on a post. Please sign up and remember if all lanes are full and there is only one person in the lane we ask that you share. Thank you.

Sun City Oro Valley: Fitness = Health = Longevity and a Quality of Life! Sign up for the SCOV Presidents Challenge Click Here . Thank you, Lonnie R. Davis, Aquatic & Fitness Center Coordinator.

New Green Fee Twilight Rates:Here's another reminder about a great new deal. After 2 PM you can play as many holes as you can get in for only $25 without a cart and $35 with a cart. Most tee-time days (Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday), the course is not nearly full. So here's an opportunity for you to play at a super rate and for the Views Golf Club to fill the course during the later afternoon hours. As the season changes the twilight time and rate will change. Call 825-3110 for tee times.

Dispose-A-Med  Empty your medicine cabinet and bring your unused or expired prescriptions, over the counter medications, vitamins/supplements to the Sun City Activity Center and dispose of them properly. The Oro Valley Police and the Sun City Vistoso Community Foundation will be there to accept the above items.

When: 2nd Tuesday, every other month 9-11 AM

     Schedule 2014:  3/11, 5/13, 7/8, 9/9, 11/11

     Schedule 2015: 1/13, 3/10, 5/12, 7/13, 9/14, 11/9

     Where: Sun City Activity Center

There are important changes in the Dispose-A-Med program procedures. The Foundation has not been involved in making these changes. The new regulations are a result of DEA changes which are to be followed by the Oro Valley Police, and as a result, the Foundation. Here are the new regulations:

  1. The Oro Valley Police and Foundation personnel in attendance are no longer allowed to handle the items brought in for disposal. The person with the medications will need to separate the pill type items and the liquid or jell type items themselves and will then be shown which Oro Valley Police containers are to be used for the deposit. The items do not need to be opened; they can be deposited in the original bottle/container in which they are packaged.

  2. We no longer can accept syringes, inhalers or empty medicine bottles and things like elastic or other bandages, and other non-medication items. Only prescription, over-the-counter, vitamins/supplements, etc. items can be accepted.
