Landscape Maintenance Volunteers: Would you like to spend a few hours each week or possible each month helping out with light landscape maintenance in the common area? If so, please email me at bmariani@suncityorovalley.com When/if some volunteers come forward, I will pass your contact information on to Mary Cunningham, Common Area Maintenance Superintendent so that she can organize the volunteers.

Administration Department Staffing: Well, it's that time of the year again. The Board election is around the corner and the budget process is beginning so once again there are rumors abound about how the administrative staff continues to grow. Again, as I have done in the past, I will attempt to clearly explain that this rumor is just that, a rumor without any basis. The fact is that over the year six years that I have served as general manager of SCOV and I'm confident for a few years before that, the administration department staff has been nearly static in size.

Here are the changes that have taken place in the administration department over the past several years.

1. The major change was the change from a volunteer Librarian to a paid Librarian position. This came about from a recommendation of the past Long Range Planning Committee to evaluate the need for a paid Librarian due to the increasing workload required of that position. The Board and management evaluated this issue and determined that it would be beneficial and appropriate to institute a paid position due to the fact that approximately 30 hours per week were required to complete the tasks required of this position.

2. One full-time position was changed from the Activities Department to the Administration Department. The reason for this changes was the employee was primarily working in the front office performing administrative duties. Therefore, it was determined that in order to accurately allocate expenses and be as transparent as possible, the cost for this position should be moved from the Activities Department to the Administration Department. This change did NOT create a new position but merely transferred costs from one department to another.
3. The Community Services Coordinator was changed from a full-time position to a part-time position and the Communications Coordinator was changed from a part-time position to a full-time position, which resulted in essentially no change in staffing. 4. The Administrative and Communications Director was given a new title of Assistant Manager. This position is NOT an assistant to the General Manager. This position was established primarily to assure that a specific person/position would assume the duties of the General Manager when the General Manager is out of the office for vacation or illness.
5. All other positions, which includes the Controller, Accounts Payable/Receivable Coordinator and Human Resources Director are positions that have been in places for several years with duties that have not changed or have changed very little.

In summary the only material change to the Administration Department staff during the past several years is the establishment of a paid Librarian position rather than a volunteer position. Assuming that the Association plans to retain the Library, which is the most used amenity in SCOV, the only way to alleviate this paid position is to find a qualified person who will volunteer about 30 hours of his/her time every week to oversee the Library operations. No one has come forward to offer their free services to date so the likelihood is we'll continue compensating the Librarian.

Bestselling author, Nancy Turner event: Nancy Turner will speak about her latest book, My Name Is Resolute, on February 25 at 1:30 PM in the Auditorium. You may have read her first book, These Is My Words, chosen as the One Book Arizona in 2008. Stop by the Library for a ticket. Admission is free.

Neighborhood Pride - The Foliage is Very Confused!: No, spring is not here. In fact, we have another five weeks to wait for its arrival, but all of our foliage in SCOV is very confused! With our warm temperatures and no rain in January, and our hot-for-February temperatures and still no rain, plants and shrubs in our yards are blooming already, and weeds are appearing - everywhere we look. The NPC strongly suggests that you walk your yards, see the little weeds, and zap them with weed killer before they take over your yard and your neighbors. Making an effort before the weeds get too tall will certainly be appreciated, not only by the NPC but your immediate neighbors as well. Our winter is not over yet!
