Questions, comments, etc. regarding This Week's SCOV Report: If you have a question, comment or other response that you like to make regarding an item in this report, you may reply to this message. Depending on the nature of your response (comment, question, etc.), I will acknowledge your reply, answer your questions or take other appropriate action(s) in as timely a manner as possible.

Fitness Center Project: The fitness center construction continues to progress very well. With that stated, there are budget and on-time completion challenges. In spite of the fact that the Task Force founds ways to identify savings, there have been enough completely unexpected issues beyond the control of the contractor or Task Force that have increased overall costs. Although the project is still within budget, there is now about $20,000 out of approximately $100,000 of the project contingency remaining. Since it anticipated that additional unexpected items will arise over the next nearly two months, it is evident that the budget is very tight and it's possible there may be a very small overage. If this overage does occur, there will be no additional assessment as the overage will be covered by funds available in the Capital Improvement Fund or Contingency Fund.

As with all remodel projects, there are many unexpected issues that come along and this project has not been the exception to that rule, which has delayed various aspects of the project. Although at least one phase of the project is behind schedule, the construction superintendent still thinks he can finish on time. If the superintendent is able to complete the project on time, he desires a great deal of praise. Keep in mind that even if the project is not completed prior to January 1st, it will be finished close enough to on-schedule that any delay should be very minimal.

Happy Hour: Please join us for a fun Happy Hour on Monday, November 11th from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Café. Here's an opportunity to have drinks, appetizers and a good time with your friends and neighbors.

AFC Pool Information Line:During the construction of the fitness center, it will be necessary to close the pool from time-to-time. To assist you with knowing when these closures will take place, an information line has been put into place. If you'll call 917-8088 before you go to the pool, you'll receive a message letting you know if the pool is open or closed.

Librarian: PART-TIME LIBRARIAN WANTED:  The individual must be a team player.  Our library is a friendly, welcoming, fun, community center with about 13,000 books, DVDs, and CDs. The librarian is responsible for the management and daily operation of the library.  He/she will recruit, train and supervise volunteer staff, select, purchase, and process new items, and maintain the collection.  Duties include: managing the library budget, cataloging and processing materials, maintaining the library database, shopping and negotiating trade-ins and discounts, which requires travel to various locations. In addition she/he will purchase library supplies, coordinate special events, organize book sales, and work with the Friends of the Library.  If interested, please email resume to jobscov@gmail.com

The Posse needs your help: The Posse is always looking for volunteers to join our squads and participate in our Neighborhood Patrols.  Now, we are also looking to fill three positions on the Posse Board by or before the end of the year.  They are the Posse Committee Chairperson, a Squad Leader and the Committee Secretary.  The new Posse Committee Chairperson will replace the retiring Posse Chair, Del Balston.  The open Squad Leader position is created by the retirement of Squad E Co-Leader, Dee Bethke.  The opening in the Secretary position is created by the former Secretary, Pat Monson, giving up that position to focus more time on her Squad A Co-Leader tasks.  Any SCOV resident who is interested in any of these important positions should contact John Njaa at 825-5486 or 619-517-0006.

The Board invites you: The Board of Directors wants to invite you to each and every Study Session and Board Meeting. Your thoughts and input are important and one of the best ways to be heard is by attending these monthly meetings. In addition, to this invitation the Board would like you to stop by the meetings 15 minutes before the meetings begin so you and the Board Members can have an opportunity for a casual conversation. This pre-meeting period will give you an opportunity to have one-on-one time with Board Members so you can either talk about light social issues or an Association related issue that may be very important to you. The November Board Meeting will be held on the 14th in the Welcome Center Conference Room 3 at 9 a.m. so please stop by a little early.

Dispose-A-Med:   Empty your medicine cabinet and bring your unused or expired prescriptions, over the counter medications, vitamins/supplements to the Sun City Activity Center and dispose of them properly. The Oro Valley Police and the Sun City Vistoso Community Foundation will be there to accept the above items.

When: 2nd Tuesday, every other month 9-11am

   Schedule: 2013 - 11/12

                     2014 - 1/14, 3/11, 5/13, 7/8, 9/9, 11/11

   Where: Sun City Activity Center

There are important changes in the Dispose-A-Med program procedures. The Foundation has not been involved in making these changes. The new regulations are a result of DEA changes which are to be followed by the Oro Valley Police, and as a result, the Foundation. Here are the new regulations:

  1. The Oro Valley Police and Foundation personnel in attendance are no longer allowed to handle the items brought in for disposal. The person with the medications will need to separate the pill type items and the liquid or jell type items themselves and will then be shown which Oro Valley Police containers are to be used for the deposit. The items do not need to be opened; they can be deposited in the original bottle/container in which they are packaged.
  2. We no longer can accept syringes, inhalers or empty medicine bottles and things like elastic or other bandages, and other non-medication items.
  3. Only prescription, over-the-counter, vitamins/supplements, etc. items can be accepted.

SCOV Sock Drive For Tucson's Homeless Veterans:  It begins at our Veterans Day event.  Boxes will be at the Veterans Day program and in the Activity Center and Welcome Center for new white socks to be dropped off until December 15th.  If anyone wants to contribute money for socks to be bought at a big discount they can call Sandy and Hal Jasper at 818-1785.

Saturday, December 21 - Holiday Golf Cart Parade:  A registration form is in the November Tipster. Prizes: 1st place $100 2nd place $75 and 3rd place $50. Join in the fun by being in the parade or come out to watch it. Also if you don't have a golf cart why not have a cart represent a club. The deadline to turn in your form is December 2 at 4pm. Judging will be done by nonresidents. If you don't have a registration form, they are available at the Welcome Center. Please drop off completed registration forms at the Welcome Center.

AFC Pool covering: Information was just received that the AFC pool will start to be covered on Tuesday, November 12. This is the usual day for the AFC pool to be closed for monthly maintenance. Please disregard the information that was sent stating the pool would be covered on Friday. Thank you.

Rancho Vistoso Median landscaping: You may have noticed that many small marker flags have been placed in the median and the sickly trees near Sun City Blvd. have been removed. The flags are marking locations of plants that will soon be installed. The trees have been removed due to the situation that more dead and dying braches were being removed from the trees in recent years than new limbs were growing. In their place about 20 new Palo Verde trees will be planted which will bring a lot of bright color to the area.

Congratulations Casa Amigas: Casa Amigas, one of SCOV's fantastic clubs is being recognized by Amphi School District as Community Partners of the Month.  Casa provides sewn and knitted items more than once a month to not only Amphi but also to Catalina Resource Center.

Pickleball paddles: There are four pickleball paddles that can be checked out for play.  These paddles are located at the Activity Center and can be checked out during the times that the Activity Center is open, Weekdays and Weekends.

Veteran's Day Celebration: Please join us in the Auditorium to honor the veterans of Sun City Oro Valley, at 11 am on November 11th. A program is planned by the Oro Valley American Legion Post along with a welcome from the Oro Valley Mayor, Dr. Hiremath.
