October 11, 2013

Active Health Presentation: You won't want to miss this afternoon's Active Health presentation on Stress: A Balance between Too Little and Too Much by University of Arizona Professor Mary-Frances O'Connor. It will be held in the auditorium at 1:00 PM this afternoon, Friday, October 11. No tickets are necessary for this free program, but you will want to pick up a ticket for the raffle prizes.

Café Resident Pricing: There was some uncertainty about whether or not the resident Café pricing would be retained year round. What came out of the uncertainty was that some residents were not given the resident pricing during the first day or two of October and were informed that the resident pricing had been discontinued. This message was quickly reserved and a decision has been made to retain the resident pricing at the Café which is 10% lower than the published menu price. All you have to do as a resident is bring your SCOV identification card when patronizing the Café and show it to your server.

Why the Board Needs Me and What's Involved Round Table Discussion: The Nominating Committee will be hosting a round table discussion "Why the Board Needs Me and What's Involved" to talk about the role of a board member.  All are invited to attend. This event will be Friday, November, 1 PM, Welcome Center Conference Room 1. Please RSVP for the round table discussion Click Here. Thank you for considering serving in the Association's community leadership.

Fitness Center Project: According to the contractor's timeline chart the project is now back on time and scheduled to be completed at the end of December. The project continues to show considerable progress in that interior and exterior work is coming along very well. For example, the spa is under construction; the multi-purpose room area (old locker rooms) is beginning to look like a room; the concrete floor has been installed in the new hall and locker room and area; metal studs have been installed in the locker room area. On the exterior, block and brick has been installed to form a new wall for the cardio/strength area and the pillars that will support the new cardio/strength area room have been installed.

Distribution of Community Directory 2013:  Your help is needed to prepare and distribute our 2013 Telephone Book.

October 25, Friday, 4:30 PM, Auditorium:  count, organize, and prep the books and bags.

Take your prepped books home.

October 26, Saturday, distribute your books.

Please contact Carolyn Lerch  gclerch@comcast.net  or 818-3319 if you can help. Thank you!

AFC Pool Information Line: During the construction of the fitness center, it will be necessary to close the pool from time-to-time. To assist you with knowing when these closures will take place, an information line has been put into place. If you'll call 917-8088 before you go to the pool, you'll receive a message letting you know if the pool is open or closed.

Saturday, October 19, Mary Martin Stockdale: Mary will perform well known show tunes and a few of her own arrangements. This is not a classical music concert. Mary is well known in the Tucson areas so if you love piano music, don't miss this show. The seating will be theater seating no food or drinks may be brought into the event. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the performance is at 7 p.m. A few of the songs to be played are: Blue Skies, Summertime, Can't help falling in love with you, New York New York and Ebb Tide. Tickets are now on sale at the Welcome Center or at the door. The price is $10 per person.

Audio Visual Equipment installation in Native American Rooms: The AV equipment will be installed in the Native American Rooms the week of November 4-8. Installation of this equipment will require that the Navajo and Hohokam rooms will be closed during this time and the Hopi will be close, at least, during part of this time.

Town still working on RVB street lights: As you are aware, most of the RVB street lights are not working which results in a very dark situation. Considering how dark it is as a result of this lack of lighting, I thought it was worth providing a reminder to take extra care when driving along RVB and if you walking or riding a bike be sure to have lights on your bike and/or very visible clothing.

New Beginning Golf School Beginning Soon: This is an excellent and economic way to learn how to play golf. Our golf pros, Kim Griggs and Rick Sample (PGA Professionals) will be teaching you the basic of this great, fun game during four sessions. The sessions will be held on Sunday, October 27th; Saturday, November 2nd; Sunday, November 3rd; Saturday, November 9th; Sunday, November 10th; and Saturday, November 16th. All sessions are from 9 to 10 a.m. Your investment is only $120 for all six sessions. To sign up use THIS LINK or call the Pro Shop at 825-3110.

Fitness Center Project Updates: Would you like more information about the status of the Fitness Center construction project? If so, attend the Board/GM Coffees. At these events, until the project is completed, a member of the Fitness Center Construction Task Force will provide a report and answer any questions you might have. The next Coffee is scheduled for October 15th at 1:00 p.m. in the Navajo Room. It's your fitness center being built with your money, so I urge you to come and learn what's happening with its construction. Detailed information about what the Fitness Center Construction Task Force is doing is available on our website at this link. Here you will find the minutes of the meetings that the Task Force has with the architect and contractor. You can also email your questions about the project to  afcremodel@suncityorovalley.com.

Pool Maintenance Schedule: Please remember that the Aquatic & Fitness Center (AFC) pool is always closed the second Tuesday of each month and the Desert Oasis pool is always closed the second Wednesday of each month for cleaning. Also, until further notice the AFC pool will not open until 9 a.m. on the next two Thursday to allow pool light repairs to take place.

Wind: Strong winds the past couple of days bring to mind some possible danger problems which could occur in our community with palm tree fronds flying about. Car drivers could become startled if a frond flies in front of the car as it is being driven. The driver might automatically swerve to avoid the frond, and cause an accident with another vehicle or even a walker. Another situation might occur if a flying frond happens to hit a walker on the head or in the face as the frond is blowing around. This is a reminder to have dead palm fronds removed from your palm trees so they do not become a hazard to folks living or driving in our community. If you need to find a company who can remove the fronds, check with Consumer Referral for the name of one you can call to get this project accomplished. Thank you from Neighborhood Pride.

Arizona Run for the Fallen: On Friday, October 18th the first annual (www.azrunforthefallen.org) Arizona Run for the Fallen will pass through Oro Valley and right up Rancho Vistoso Boulevard. The tribute run honors all the Arizona military heroes who lost their lives in the war on terror. Fallen Hero markers will be placed 1 mile apart the entire length of the 146-mile route. Active military members, carrying the US, Arizona, and Honor and Remember flags, will be running to honor their fallen comrades. They will stop at each hero marker and read a brief bio about that hero, salute and pay respects to the Gold Star family present at their hero's marker, then continue on to the next tribute.

The runners will arrive at the first hero marker just north of the Safeway shopping center on RV Blvd at around 10:40 a.m. on October 18 and will exit north onto Oracle Road at around 11:15. Honor and Remember hopes to line the run route with bystanders and supporters. Whether you go to a specific hero marker to personally show your support to that Gold Star family, or choose to stand anywhere along the side of the route, this is a unique opportunity to pay your respect to our fallen hometown heroes and their families.

Go to www.azrunforthefallen.org and select ROUTE, then DAY 1 from the scroll down menu, and it will show you all the hero markers for day 1 of the run. Zoom in on the screen (click on the + sign at the top left) you will be able to see exactly where the hero markers will be placed along RV Blvd and the exact time of each 2 minute ceremony.
