A Brief Explanation of the Annual Fund by Mr. Burroughs
- What is the Annual Fund? It is an opportunity for our parents, grandparents, school staff, alumni, parishioners, and others to make a tax-deductible gift to support the annual operations of the school.
- What does the school do with this money? Revenue from the Annual Fund pays for all of the non-academic operations of the school: utilities, information technology, supplies, maintenance, grounds keeping, insurance, etc. Without your gifts to the annual fund we can't turn the lights on, make a copy, or keep our bathrooms clean.
- How much money does the school need to raise through the annual fund? Our goal for the year is $225,000. That total includes contributions from all of the groups above. In order to meet that goal from just our school families, we need each family to give and average of $809.
- Who participates in the Annual Fund? This year 100% of our school staff and more than 95% of our parents have participated in the Annual Fund. We also receive contributions from grandparents, parishioners, alumni, and other supporters of Catholic education.
- Why not just raise tuition and do away with the Annual Fund? As we all know, tuition is not tax-deductible. Your gift to the Annual Fund is tax deductible. The Annual Fund also provides an opportunity for grandparents, school staff, alumni, aunts and uncles, parishioners, and others to make a contribution to support Sacred Heart School in the same way that they already give to support other non-profit organizations (like The Red Cross, Catholic Relief Services, or Habitat for Humanity). Contributions to the Annual Fund help us to keep tuition affordable for the breadth of our community and all the entire school community, not just current families, to support Catholic education.
- How can I help? First, please make sure to fulfill this year's pledge to the Annual Fund. We are counting on you. Second, prayerfully consider how you can make a generous pledge to the Annual Fund for next year, keeping that average of $809 in mind. We know that not everyone can give at that level, but we ask that each family give what they can afford. During registration next week, fill in your pledge amount. We can achieve 100% participation with your help. Third, check to see if your employer matches contributions to the Annual Fund. If you are not sure how to do this, please contact Theresa Daigle in our Development Office for assistance. Fourth, let your family and friends know about the Annual Fund and ask them to participate. They already give to support other important non-profit organizations, why not give to support Catholic education?
School Finance Meeting
Next Thursday, March 5th, there will be two presentations about the school's finances. The presentations will be held in the Moore Theater at 8:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. A panel of school and parish leadership will present a review of the school's revenue and expenses, projections for next year, and an explanation of how our families can best support the financial health of our school. There will be time for questions at the end of the presentations. All parents are encouraged to attend. - Mr. Burroughs
School Security
In order to make some important upgrades to the school's security system, we will be adding a one-time $35 per family fee to this year's registration. Mr. Burroughs

Departures
First, I hope that everyone received the announcement that Mr. Murphy and Mrs. Dennehy will be retiring at the end of this school year after teacher here for 25 and 15 years, respectively. We will miss them both.
In addition, Ms. Heinrich in 2nd grade is going to be married this summer and has decided to take a leave from full-time teaching in order to start a family (and bring her children back to Sacred Heart School one day). Ms. Heinrich has been with us for 6 years at Sacred Heart School. We will miss her kind and gentle spirit and the smiles that she brings to her class and the whole school community. - Mr. Burroughs
Sacred Heart School's First Poetry Slam!
As a part of Young Authors' Day this year, our middle school students learned about writing and performing poems. All of our middle school students wrote and performed poems in preparation for a poetry slam this morning. Three amazing finalists from each grade participated and were scored by a panel of five judges. However, as the host of the poetry slam reminded the students several times, "The points are not the point, the point is poetry!" Our winners were: Jenny Cook (6th), Amelia Simpson (7th), and Matt Wieck (8th). I was truly impressed by the quality of the poems and their performance. All of the terrific poems from our finalists will be on our website soon. Watch for a link to be sent out by email. - Mr. Burroughs
CRS Rice Bowl
This Lent we will participate in CRS Rice Bowl, a faith-in-action program that will help you experience Lenten spirituality by living in solidarity with people in need around the world.
As we, the global Church, prepare for the World Meeting of Families 2015 in Philadelphia this fall, it is especially appropriate to come together in prayer as a family this Lent. Your cardboard CRS Rice Bowl and Lenten Calendar are great tools to guide your Lenten prayer, fasting and almsgiving.
Read these materials together and consider what you will give up for Lent as a family or as individuals. Be sure to write your goals on the side of your CRS Rice Bowl.
Your Lenten Calendar has brief activities for each day of Lent, Stories of Hope from people around the world and recipes for simple meatless meals. Consider reading the Lenten Calendar as a family each day at dinner. Try one or more of the recipes for a meatless Friday dinner and be sure to watch the CRS Rice Bowl Global Kitchen videos to learn how to prepare each meal.
Be sure to visit www.crsricebowl.org to view videos of people whose lives are touched by your support of CRS Rice Bowl. You can also find fun activities for your family. And download the CRS Rice Bowl app to receive daily reflections right on your phone-and to track your Lenten sacrifices.
We will be collecting your CRS Rice Bowls at the end of Lent, so stay tuned to learn more. Thank you for using CRS Rice Bowl with your family this Lent.
