Mr. Sheffield's Retirement Celebration

After 48 years of service to Catholic schools (35 of those served at SHS), Sacred Heart School invites you to help us celebrate the retirement of Carl Sheffield of Saturday, June 14 6:30-8:30 pm in the Sacred Heart School Gymnasium.

Calling All Library Books!

All books from Sacred Heart School Library are due back this week, by Friday, June 13.

Reminder slips have been given to students this week listing outstanding books. Please assist your student in locating and returning their books. Emails will be sent next week to families owing fees for lost books. Thanks for your support and use of our great library! - Mrs. Hooper

Staff Changes

This week I learned that Mrs. Ennis, our primary Spanish teacher, will be leaving us at the end of the year. We will miss Barb greatly as she was the originator of our Spanish program in grades k-3 and overhauled the program in grades 4 and 5 as well. Barb also left her mark as a leader of the jobs committee, one of the co-creators of the Spartan Superstars program, and was instrumental in building the current science fair program. She leaves us in order to be able to spend more time with her family and other commitments.

Mr. Brown in middle school math will not be returning to middle school year as a result of scheduling changes for next year. I am grateful to Mike for stepping in to the position late in the summer as we were in great need of an additional math teacher. He has been patient and flexible while learning the culture of our school and making the transition to teaching middle school students.

I also want to thank Ms. Jameson who has done a terrific job filling in for Brandon Schmid during this third trimester. Her poise and calm demeanor have been impressive as she stepped in to social studies, math, and science classes already well under way for the year.

Finally, I want to thank Mrs. Bergere for her service this year and in the past in middle school religion, language arts, science and more. It was so nice when Rachel returned to Sacred Heart School after her time touring the country with her husband. When she returned she took on the role of religion teacher in the middle school as we were in great need of someone willing and able to fill that role. Rachel jumped right into the Catechist Certification Program in order to prepare and has been developing our program ever since then. She is taking some time off to be at home with her young children. Perhaps someday she will return again to SHS.

Tuition 2013-2014

For those of you utilizing our FACTS monthly payment plan, your final payments are taking place in June.

Tuition 2014-2015

We are in the process of setting up payment plans accordingly.  If you are a new family using FACTS monthly payment plan, you will be receiving an email directly from FACTS early next week advising you to set up your bank account.  Please do so right away to ensure that a July 2014* payment will be processed.  If not, the total amount due will be spread over an 11 month period starting in August 2014 - June 2015. * Note that Pre-K only families that have requested a 10 month program will receive additional instructions on how we will set up the September- June payment plan.

  • If you are a returning FACTS user, your account is automatically being rolled forward with the 2014-2015 tuition amount related to your family and your first withdrawal will take place in July 2014.
  • If you have chosen to pay your tuition in full, the due date is on or before Tuesday, September 2nd, 2014 (the 1st day of school.)

Feel free to e-mail Susana Knapp if you have any questions about this process.

Additions to the School Uniform for Girls

Lands' End recently added some new items for girls to their uniform line that we thought you might like to have as additional options.  Anyone with a middle school daughter knows how long we have waited for Lands' End to add the Khaki Box Pleat Skirt for girls.  We have also added a new Plain Front Chino Short in Khaki for girls in kindergarten through fifth grade.  Two additional shirt options were also added for girls Pre-Kindergarten through Eighth, a short-sleeve Peter Pan collar shirt and a short and long-sleeve straight collar stretch blouse.  As a reminder, if you are shopping for uniforms online, you can log onto the Land's website www.landsend.com and select the School Uniform tab.  Sacred Heart School's School Code is 900085846, this will link you to the specific SHS uniform page.

Summer Spanish Requirements for Middle School

Current students entering 7th and 8th grade will need to complete a Summer Spanish "Packet". The assignment consists of completing the Practice activities on the  Realidades website for each chapter completed during the school year (see below).  Students can access the practice activities by clicking on the "Practice Activities" link under each Chapter.  If a student is looking to review the grammar concepts prior to completing the assignment, they can click on the link and the "Repaso del Capítulo", which provides all of the vocabulary and grammar concepts taught within that unit of study. These assignments are due on the first day of Spanish class in the fall of 2014. To receive credit for these assignments in September, students must print off the results of each activity (with an 80% or higher).  If the score is less than 80% they must redo the assignment until they achieve an 80% or higher on each concept. Some assignments don't give an overall score so students will need to write the score at the top of the activity.

  • Current students entering 7th grade: Must complete the following Practice Activities for each of the following chapters: (a total of 14 assignments in all)
    • Capítulo 1a: infinitives, negatives, and agreement and disagreement       (3 activities)

New Background Check Procedures

In an effort to better secure your personal information, the Archdiocese has switched to a new background check provider that does not require Social Security numbers. For that reason, it will be necessary for your identification (driver's license) to be checked when you submit background check paperwork to ensure that the name, address, and date of birth match those on the form. Existing background checks are still valid, so you will not be asked to fill out a new form until you are due for a three year update.  Please contact Amy Davis with any questions.

We strongly recommend that all parents take this class, but it is a requirement for those who will be doing any volunteering at Sacred Heart. Treasures of Faith Annual Fund Update

We currently are in need of an additional $60,537 for the Treasures of Faith Annual Fund goal of $225,000.

Even though the Annual Fund is 100% voluntary, we rely on these monies to support our operational budget.  Many schools receive close to 100% participation in their annual fund from their community. Currently, only about 80% of the Sacred Heart School community supports our annual fund. We are asking that every family prayerfully consider supporting this most important fund. Not only will that allow us to meet our budgeted goal, but 100% participation will allow us to seek foundational grants for special programs and capital improvements.

Please make your donation at the following website:  Treasures of Faith or drop off a check made payable to Sacred Heart School to the attention of Theresa Daigle. Thank you for your consideration.

Chess Club Coordinator Needed for 2014-15 School Year

Sacred Heart is looking for a parent to coordinate Chess Club.   Chess Club meets for an hour after school one day a week. There are two ten-week sessions during the year and instructors are from Chess4Life.

The Chess Club coordinator will coordinate with Chess4Life regarding the schedule and procure two classrooms for Chess Club to meet.  They are also in charge of getting parents to supervise each week while the instructors are teaching.

Sacred Heart is respected as an elementary school chess team, winning many team trophies over the last 6 years, and sending several students to the Washington State Chess Tournament each spring.

Please consider volunteering to keep this tradition alive!  Chess study has shown to increase math skills, memory and self-confidence, along with improve patience, concentration, and sportsmanship.

To volunteer or ask questions, e-mail Gena McReynolds.
