Do Something Historic!
The Seahawks made history last Sunday. Now you have the opportunity to do the same. Become a part of history at Saturday's auction by raising your paddle for the school's endowment. When you make a donation to the endowment you will become a part of the history of Sacred Heart School because your gift will not only support our current programs and students, but will continue to provide support for all future students, too.
61 years ago men and women of Sacred Heart Parish made history by working, donating, and sacrificing to build our school. They made history by making our school. Now it's our turn to make sure that this history of excellent Catholic education continues to flourish here at Sacred Heart School.
We are aiming to reach our goal of a $1,000,000 endowment for the school. Currently our endowment is just about $850,000. With everyone's support we can make history on Saturday by reaching that goal. Please prayerfully consider how you can be a part of making history and then raise your paddle on Saturday for the Fund-a-Need.

Please join the 6th graders as they present:
A Peacemaker Wax Museum, Breathing Life into History.
Later today, Feb. 6th, in the gym at 2:20-3:05pm, the sixth grade students will present a look at peacemakers throughout history. Each student read a biography and wrote a speech focusing on that person's peacemaker qualities. Now that they have memorized their speeches, they are ready to share while in costume in a project that integrates religion, social studies, and language arts. You won't want to miss it!

Accreditation Update
Next Wednesday through Friday, the accreditation visiting team will be here at Sacred Heart School. We are looking forward to having them spend three days with us visiting classrooms, attending our school Mass, observing the programs and operations of the school, and meeting with students, parents, and staff.
One of the important things that the visiting team will be reviewing is are our Schoolwide Learning Expectations which can be reviewed here. A full version of the school's self-study can be found on our website.
Uniform Reminders
Since we have had several free dress days lately, I thought that it was important to remind everyone about some important points related to our school uniform. The purpose of our uniform is to create a sense of unity among our students, foster school pride, and allow our students to focus on their academics and faith development instead of worrying about what clothes they or their classmates are wearing. It is important to keep these things in mind when thinking about the uniform so that we are observing both the letter and the spirit of the uniform.
We have a long tradition of selling used uniforms, which is terrific. It allows families to save money and recycle uniform pieces that might otherwise have been discarded. We love used uniforms. But sometimes it's time for a sweatshirt, or skirt, or some other uniform item to retire. If part of your child's uniform is damaged or stained, please don't send them to school in it. If they've outgrown part of their uniform, please upgrade them to a new one (and our used uniform closet is a great place for this).
When it comes to promoting unity with our uniform, we need to make sure that our students are wearing uniform items that are part of our school colors. Socks, hairbands, etc. should follow the uniform regulations.
Next week we will be having reminders about the uniform as part of the morning announcements as well as uniform checks throughout the school. During these checks, students will be rewarded for being in their correct uniform with a raffle ticket. On Friday, all of these raffle tickets will be entered into a drawing for some fun prizes. Students whose uniform does not follow the Uniform Guidelines will have a reminder sent home to their parents.
Thank you for your support of school unity, pride, and our focus on academics and faith formation. - Mr. Burroughs
Young Authors Convention Wrap-up
Last week we had a wonderful day of fun, learning and creativity! The Young Authors Convention was a great success! Hopefully your children came home excited about writing and books! Each speaker had an interesting and engaging presentation. The book mark contest showed us how much our students like reading and some really fun pieces of art! Arthur Dorros, one of our writers, has a book available for purchase through Scholastic Book Club. If you are interested go to the Scholastic website and search Animal Talks or item #3s6. Alley Oop our storyteller and songwriter has several stories and songs on ITunes so check him out, too!
As a parent I have to thank our school and Parent's club for their support of this unique experience. Huge thanks to Mrs. Engman and Mrs. Hooper. Looking forward to next year's event!

Flu Prevention
As you may have noticed, flu is on the rise at Sacred Heart School. We have seen a number of students out sick due to the flu and have recently begun to see staff infected with this illness as well. Below is some information from the Washington State Dept. of Health about this year's flu season, how the flu spreads and how it can be prevented.
In the hopes of keeping our students and staff healthy, we do ask that you keep your students home whenever they have a fever and until they have recovered from the flu.

Volunteer Help Needed on the Playground and Lunchroom
We are looking for volunteers to take on a Thursday Lunch Recess Duty from 12:15-1pm, as well as people to help in the lunchroom on Wednesdays and Thursdays and from 11:50am - 12:50pm. If you are available to help with any of these jobs, please email our Service Board Chair,
Accreditation Early Dismissal
The accreditation visiting committee will be here February 12th through 14th. After observing classes and activities at the school and meeting with small groups and individuals, they will write a report of their findings and make a recommendation for the term of our accreditation. They will read that report to our staff on Friday afternoon. In order to accommodate this on a Friday afternoon (which is both Valentine's Day and the Friday of President's Day Weekend), we will be dismissing school at 12pm for grades kindergarten through eighth. Pre-kindergarten will operate on its regular schedule. This early dismissal will allow our staff and the visiting team to meet and celebrate and still head home at a reasonable time. I apologize for the late word about this change. The chair of our visiting committee told me today that she has read through our self-study and is very happy with what she has seen and felt comfortable moving up our time frame bit because of that.
