Free Dress Day

Thank you to all of you who attended mass this past weekend.  Free Dress for those students who attended mass is Tuesday, September 24th.  Students will need to bring the Free Dress Coupon they received after mass with them to school on Tuesday.  Families are asked to review our uniform policy SHS Uniform Policy for guidance on Free Dress attire.  As a reminder, yoga pants and leggings are no longer allowed on Free Dress Days.

Volunteers Needed

We have an immediate need for volunteers in both the Playground and the Health Room.

  • We are looking to fill a Wednesday Lunch Recess shift from 12:10 to 1:10; this position is for the first half of the school year only. Playground volunteers are asked to aide in the supervision of students.
  • We also need 5 volunteers to fill immediate openings in the Health Room. Health Room volunteers give aid, personal attention and comfort to students who visit the Health Room. They may also need to dispense sympathy, apply band-aids and ice packs, call parents, if needed, and perform other routine care tasks. Health Room volunteers may be asked to assist the Health Room staff with tasks such as copying, filing, etc. School staff respond to serious illness, injury, or allergic reactions. We need volunteers to fill the following shifts: Monday 8:30-10:00am alternating weeks all year; 2 openings for Monday 1:45-3:15pm alternating weeks all year; Wednesday 8:30-10:00am alternating weeks all year; Wednesday 8:30-10:00am alternating weeks all year.

If you can help with any of these volunteer Service Jobs, please e-mail Colleen O'Donnell, Service Board Chair.

PowerSchool and Edmodo Training

Nancy Schoeggl will be offering training on PowerSchool and Edmodo for parents on Wednesday, September 25 from 2:30 to 3:15pm in the school library. Come with your questions!

Tardies

It is important for students to report to school on time each day to receive the maximum benefit from classroom learning and instructional participation.  Attendance is taken each day by every classroom teacher at 8:30am and at the start of each subsequent period in the middle school.  Any student arriving to school after 8:30am will be directed to the main office for a tardy slip; students who are tardy three times will receive a detention after their third tardy.

  • In grades K - 5, students who receive three (3) unexcused tardies in one trimester will receive a recess detention on their fourth (4) unexcused tardy.  An email notification will be sent home by the child's teacher after the third (3) unexcused tardy informing parents that if there is an additional unexcused tardy during the trimester their children will receive a recess detention.  On the fourth unexcused tardy, and email will be sent to the child's parents and the Vice Principal letting them know of the detention.  Detention should be served during the last recess.
  • In Middle School, an email will be sent home each time a student is late to class.  When a student receives a third (3) unexcused tardy for a single class period, the student will receive an after school detention the following day.  After a detention has been given for tardiness, subsequent tardiness will result in further detention and a conference with the student, his or her parents and the administration in order to develop a corrective plan.  Students who exhibit a persistent pattern of tardiness and who do not respond to corrective action may be subject to increased disciplinary action including Saturday detention, suspension or expulsion.

Thank you in advance for your help in getting your students to school on time.

 - Mr. Burroughs and Ms. Gray

Absences/Appointments

If your child will miss or be late for school for any reason, please email your child's homeroom teacher and copy Kerry Wyman, the attendance secretary, at kwyman@sacredheart.org.  Additionally, if your child needs to leave early for an appointment also please email the homeroom teacher and Kerry Wyman. Please give yourself some time for the student to be called to the office.

Morning Drop-Off Reminders

Upper Lot Drop Off

As a reminder, morning drop-off in the Upper Lot is reserved for PK-3 families and their siblings only.  Beginning Monday, Sept. 23rd we will be once again asking that only Pre-K families park and walk their children into the school building; Pre-K students are allowed to enter the building beginning at 8:20am through the front door.

For the safety of the students using the Upper Lot, we ask that families with students in kindergarten through third grade use drop-off lane.  We will have patrol students at the corner by the library starting at 8:10 to assist students as they exit their cars to get to the sidewalk for safety. Between 8:10 and 8:20 there will be a Sacred Heart staff member outside the main entrance to wait with students until it is time to enter the building.  If you believe that your student is not yet ready to make this transition for the next week, families may park in the outer lot, walk with their student to the side entrance and then let them enter the building and walk to their classrooms on their own.  We know this transition can be difficult, but we also know how important it is for our students to begin developing and practicing their independence.  Families who are volunteering, or have other business in the school, are also asked to park in the outer lot.

Lower Lot Drop Off

Those of you with students in 4th - 8th are asked to drop your children off in the Lower Lot.  If there are no cars ahead of you, please pull your car all the way to the stairs nearest the school before stopping to unload your passengers.  If there are cars ahead of you, please pull into line behind them. Please wait until you have at least reached the basketball hoop (located past the first set of stairs) before unloading your passengers.  Please make sure your passengers exit from the driver's side of your vehicle whenever possible to avoid children crossing lines of traffic.  If you volunteering or have other business in the school, please drop off your child and then go and park.  Students are never to be walking across the parking lot in the lower lot.

Thank you in advance for your help. - Mr. Burroughs and Ms. Gray

Conference Reminders

Fall Conferences are scheduled for Thursday and Friday, October 24th and 25th.

We will be sending out the link for Pre-K - 5th Grade Conference Sign-Ups next week; no appointment is necessary for middle school conferences.  As a reminder, all students (K-8) are expected to attend their conference with their parent/s, but school is not in regular session on either of those days.  There will also be no ESS on these days.  - Ms. Gray

Regional Catholic H.S. Information Night - October 2nd 7-9pm

We are fortunate this year to be hosting one of the five information nights offered by all of the Catholic High Schools in our area. All 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students and parents from any school are invited to attend this presentation and we hope that many of our own SHS families will take advantage of this convenient opportunity!  You will be able to choose to hear 25-minute presentations by three of the eight High Schools present here that night.   Feel free to contact Susana Knapp if you have any questions.

New Directory Insert

We are working on the new 2013-2014 School Directory and anticipate that it will be finished soon. We will let you know ASAP when the inserts are complete and how they will be distributed.

Lost and Found

Please take a moment right away to mark your student's name on their items - on the OUTSIDE of their lunch boxes, on tags in their clothing and especially on their Sacred Heart Sweatshirts.  Mark your child's name on either the neck tag (small, we know) or on the wash instructions/name tag located inside on the bottom left hand side of the sweatshirts.  Items legibly marked with names will be returned to the students' classrooms.  Unmarked SHS sweatshirts/items will go into the used uniform closet and non-uniform items will reside in our lost and found closet located in the gym foyer until it gets full.  Once the closet is full, we will remind you to check for your family's items and then donate the remaining to a wonderful organization which services refugee families in the Tukwila school district.

Renewal Food Bank Food Drive

Students and parents are needed to staff a food drive at the downtown Bellevue QFC on Saturday, September 28 in two hours shifts from 9-3. Service hours are available for middle school students. Sign up here today.

New Visitor Parking Spaces Explained

You may have noticed three new visitor parking spaces in the upper parking lot. These spaces are not only for new visitors to the school, but also for parents who may be coming to school to pick up their child for appointments, picking up a child from the health room, dropping off a lunch or a library book. Basically if you are coming to school and plan on being in here for 20 minutes or less, feel free to use these spaces. However, if you are coming for recess duty, library duty, or any other activity that will keep you here for longer than 20 minutes please park in the other provided spaces. We hope that you find these new spaces convenient for a quick trip into the school.

Family Life Program Meeting and Information

As a reminder, we will be hosting two information sessions, one on Monday, September 23 from 6:30-7:30pm and the other on Tuesday, September 24 from 8:30-9:30am, to give you, as parents, the opportunity to review the materials and ask questions about the Family Life program, as well as ask any questions about Catholic teaching related to family life matters (marriage, sexuality, vocations, etc.); both meetings will take place in the Moore Theater.  The textbooks that we will be using and all teaching related to this program will conform to the teachings of the Catholic Church.

The series also offers additional online features to support the contents found in the printed materials.  We invite you to log onto the RCL Benziger Family Life website

and access the activities, resources, articles and video clips specifically developed for families.  Access to this section does require a username and password, they are flfamily (username) and flrclbf01 (password).  If you would like to review the printed materials or ask questions and are unable to make it to one of the meetings, please contact Ms. Gray or Mr. Burroughs.

Emergency Notifications

In the event of an emergency closing of the school, parents and staff will be notified through a posting to the homepage of the school's website and a notification through the school's Twitter account. Our Twitter account is only used for emergency notifications. You can follow Sacred Heart School on Twitter by texting: "follow SacredHeartSch" to 40404. You do not need to follow anyone else on Twitter to sue this account. You should receive a confirmation message within a few minutes letting you know that you have been successful in signing up. You may also receive an invitation to follow other various celebrities on Twitter, but you can ignore that message (unless you want to start following other accounts).

We will be sending out a test message on Monday, September 23rd in order to confirm that you are receiving the school's emergency messages.

Uniform Clarification - Nail Polish

The question has been asked has to whether a French Manicure is considered "clear nail polish".  As we shared at Back to School Night, we are trying to make the policy easy for students to follow and staff to monitor, so we do not consider a French manicure clear nail polish.

Picture Opt-out

Sacred Heart School staff and parents regularly photograph events and activities around the school, including in the classroom. Most of these pictures are for personal use or archival purposes. However, some photos are used in promotional materials or other publications of the school (including the school website). Student photos are never identified by name without specific parent permission. If you *do not* want your child's photograph used in school publications or promotional materials, please contact Kerry Wyman by Tuesday, September 24th to opt-out.

Puyallup Fair Parking - All Saints Catholic School

The Washington State Fair in Puyallup begins on Friday September 6th. Help support Catholic education in East Pierce County by parking at one of the All Saints School's fair parking lots. Our main entrance is located on 7th Ave SW between 2nd & 3rd St SW.  Our paved parking lots are located on 3rd St SW between 5th and 6th Ave SW in downtown Puyallup.  We are just a short distance from the main gate of the fairgrounds.  Look for our friendly volunteers in the red aprons who will assist you with your parking needs. All proceeds from our fair parking fundraiser goes directly to our operating budget. When parking with us consider bringing a non-perishable food item(s) for our Parish Food bank; last year we collected over 1,000 pounds. Do the Puyallup and help Catholic schools!

From the Heart is published weekly during the school year on Thursdays.  If you have content to include in future newsletters please obtain administration permission, and then send to Tracy Takeuchi, by Tuesday night.
