Volunteers Needed

We have an immediate need for volunteers in both the Playground and the Health Room.

  • We are looking to fill a Wednesday Lunch Recess shift from 12:10 to 1:10; this position is for the first half of the school year only. Playground volunteers are asked to aide in the supervision of students.
  • We also need 5 volunteers to fill immediate openings in the Health Room. Health Room volunteers give aid, personal attention and comfort to students who visit the Health Room. They may also need to dispense sympathy, apply band-aids and ice packs, call parents, if needed, and perform other routine care tasks. Health Room volunteers may be asked to assist the Health Room staff with tasks such as copying, filing, etc. School staff respond to serious illness, injury, or allergic reactions. We need volunteers to fill the following shifts: Monday 8:30-10:00am alternating weeks all year; 2 openings for Monday 1:45-3:15pm alternating weeks all year; Wednesday 8:30-10:00am alternating weeks all year; Wednesday 8:30-10:00am alternating weeks all year.

If you can help with any of these volunteer Service Jobs, please e-mail Colleen O'Donnell, Service Board Chair.

Visitor Parking Spaces Explained

You may have noticed three new visitor parking spaces in the upper parking lot. These spaces are not only for new visitors to the school, but also for parents who may be coming to school to pick up their child for appointments, picking up a child from the health room, dropping off a lunch or a library book. Basically if you are coming to school and plan on being in here for 20 minutes or less, feel free to use these spaces. However, if you are coming for recess duty, library duty, or any other activity that will keep you here for longer than 20 minutes please park in the other provided spaces. We hope that you find these new spaces convenient for a quick trip into the school.

Homework Help Grades 1st - 5th

Thank to you to all of you who were able to attend Back to School Night last week. For those of you who weren't able to attend, I hope you have had an opportunity to touch base with your child's teacher and get the information that was handed out.

Something that I am excited about and that may have been discussed at Back to School Night, or in recent communications home, is after school Homework Help for 1st - 5th Grade.  We have asked each of the teachers to offer two nights a week right after school (3:15-3:45) for students to come in and get help on an assignment, ask a question about something that was discussed in class or have the opportunity to make sure they are on the right track. Some teachers will have scheduled two nights per week throughout the year and others may rotate their days, which will be shared with you in their Weekly Reminders.

Please invite your students to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity, their teachers will be there available to help and want to be able to use this time for the benefit of their students.

-  Ms. Gray

Food Delivery Orders

Over the course of the year, many parents place orders for food to be delivered to the school for their child's lunch (often from Jimmy John's). This is fine. We do not mind receiving or distributing them. However, it is unfair for deliveries to not include a tip for the driver. So, when we sign for deliveries, the receipt will be checked for a tip. If no tip has been included a tip of $1 per sandwich (for easy calculation) will be added to the total before it is signed.

- Mr. Burroughs

Family Life Parent Meetings

As we introduce a Family Life program to the school this year (as required by archdiocesan policy), we want to give our parents the opportunity to review the materials, ask questions about the program, and ask any questions about Catholic teaching related to family life matters (marriage, sexuality, vocations, etc.). We will hold two information sessions on Monday, September 23 from 6:30-7:30 pm and Tuesday, September 24 from 8:30-9:30 am. Both meetings will take place in the Moore Theater. The textbooks that we will be using and all teaching related to this program will conform to the teachings of the Catholic Church. If you would like to review the materials or ask questions and are unable to make it to one of the meetings, please contact

Ms. Gray or Mr. Burroughs

Emergency Notifications

In the event of an emergency closing of the school, parents and staff will be notified through a posting to the homepage of the school's website and a notification through the school's Twitter account. Our Twitter account is only used for emergency notifications. You can follow Sacred Heart School on Twitter by texting: "follow SacredHeartSch" to 40404. You do not need to follow anyone else on Twitter to sue this account. You should receive a confirmation message within a few minutes letting you know that you have been successful in signing up. You may also receive an invitation to follow other various celebrities on Twitter, but you can ignore that message (unless you want to start following other accounts).

We will be sending out a test message on Friday, September 13th in order to confirm that you are receiving the school's emergency messages.

Picture Opt-out

Sacred Heart School staff and parents regularly photograph events and activities around the school, including in the classroom. Most of these pictures are for personal use or archival purposes. However, some photos are used in promotional materials or other publications of the school (including the school website). Student photos are never identified by name without specific parent permission.

If you *do not* want your child's photograph used in school publications or promotional materials, please contact Kerry Wyman by September 13th to opt-out.

Asbestos Compliance

Once a year, federal law mandates school administrators to inform parents and employees about local school compliance with the Asbestos Hazardous Materials Response Act (AHERA). Please click here to view the memo confirming our school's compliance of this law.

UNIFORM CLARIFICATION - NAIL POLISH

The question has been asked has to whether a French Manicure is considered "clear nail polish". As we shared at Back to School Night, we are trying to make the policy easy for students to follow and staff to monitor, so we do not consider a French manicure clear nail polish.

Puyallup Fair Parking - All Saints Catholic School

The Washington State Fair in Puyallup begins on Friday September 6th. Help support Catholic education in East Pierce County by parking at one of the All Saints School's fair parking lots. Our main entrance is located on 7th Ave SW between 2nd & 3rd St SW.  Our paved parking lots are located on 3rd St SW between 5th and 6th Ave SW in downtown Puyallup.  We are just a short distance from the main gate of the fairgrounds.  Look for our friendly volunteers in the red aprons who will assist you with your parking needs. All proceeds from our fair parking fundraiser goes directly to our operating budget. When parking with us consider bringing a non-perishable food item(s) for our Parish Food bank; last year we collected over 1,000 pounds. Do the Puyallup and help Catholic schools!

From the Heart is published weekly during the school year on Thursdays.  If you have content to include in future newsletters please obtain administration permission, and then send to Tracy Takeuchi, by Tuesday night.

Mission Statement: Sacred Heart School is a Catholic community which provides an excellent academic education in an environment of faith and virtue for families of Sacred Heart Parish and the surrounding community.
