From the Office

All School Mass

This Friday's school Mass will be for Felipe Caņete, our former Spanish teacher.

Students are allowed to wear a scarf with their uniform in his memory. Felipe's family and friends as well as alumni will be attending the Mass, so we are expecting a large crowd. This will not be a funeral Mass. It will be a regular school Mass, hosted by the 8th grade students, with the addition of a special song before Mass for Felipe and a presentation to his wife at the end.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the free dress day on Tuesday. We raised over $5,500 for his family thanks to your generosity.

If you want to help the family by doing housecleaning or other chores, or providing meals, or other activities as they come up in the weeks and months ahead, please go to the Lotsa Helping Hands website and enter the Community ID # 704802

SUMMER SKILLS

Math

Each summer we require our students to practice and maintain the skills that they have learned this year in Math.  Students who do nothing over the summer, fall behind and lose the progress they have gained.  Please let your child's teacher know by the end of the school year, which option you are choosing for this summer.

Option A:  Summer Math Skills Sharpener

-Hard Copy Math Review booklet we have used in the past.

-Order online at this website

-$20 includes shipping directly to your home

-Order the grade level that your child is currently completing.

-All new students are required to do this option.

Option B:  Math Whizz and Xtra Math

-Students continue to access their accounts at home during the summer.

-Need to log on at least 45 minutes a week for Math Whizz and 3 times a week    for Xtra Math to see growth.

-Progress is monitored and growth is tracked.  Teachers are able to use this  data to prepare for September.

-No Cost

Option C:  Weekly Tutoring

- if preferred or already in place or another program to be approved by Mrs.    Lawler

·         -New students may choose this option.

Some parents have decided to have their child do both Option A and B.  That is fine, but not required.  Please e-mail Mrs. Lawler or your child's teacher if you have any questions.

Reading

We are still reviewing the requirements for summer reading, but will not be making any drastic changes to what was required last year.  Please look for specific information in the FTH and on the website no later than the first week of June.

Placement Requests for 2013-14

Placements requests for the 2013-14 school year need to be submitted by Friday, May 24th

**Requests received after May 24th will not be considered.**

As we approach the end of the year, it is important to remember that no one knows your child academically like his or her classroom teacher. This is why the classroom teachers are so fundamental to classroom placements for the following year. Our teachers work together to place your child in the classroom that will best meet his or her needs while also keeping an eye towards balance in terms or gender, academic strengths and styles, social issues (both in terms of students who may have trouble getting along and those who get along too well). I ask that you put your trust in your children's teachers in this important and challenging process. They, like you, have your child's best interest at heart and have spent most of a year getting to know each one.

If you still believe it is important for you to provide input process the placement process, the Placement Request form is available on our website.

From The Service Board - Class Community Coordinators for 2013-14 Needed

Thank you for those of you who took on the new role of Class Community Coordinator this year, the position has been an overwhelming success!  Faculty and parents alike have provided positive feedback to the Administration.  We are looking for volunteers who are interested in taking on this service job for the 2013-2014 academic year.

Counseling Program Update

It has been a rewarding 1st year as a school counselor supporting the students, parents and staff of SHS while implementing a comprehensive school counseling program.

I've been able to provide interventions for students experiencing social, emotional or behavioral concerns and provide the necessary resources for parents when needed. I have taught counseling guidance lessons in Pre-K through 8th grade using research based curriculum created by the Committee for Children, called Second Step and in K-5th grade, taught a Conflict Management program called Kelso's Choices - The foundations of both of these programs are helping kids become positive problems solvers through empathy and compassion with a focus on bullying prevention.

Additional accomplishments I have made in my first year include, collecting data through observations, led several lunch bunch groups, trained and taught the Called to Protect lessons for the 7th grade students, implemented the North Star Girls Group for 6th grade girls, led parent discussion nights hosted by Parent's Club, and collaborated with other local Catholic school counselors.

It has been an excellent first year in starting this program and I appreciate your continued support and positive feedback.

I look forward to building on and enriching the school counseling program for the 13-14 school year!  - Kari Boyd
