2013-14 Service Job Sign-ups!
It's time to start thinking of what service job you'd like for next year. Please mark your calendar for the 2013-14 Service Job Sign-ups next Friday, May 17th from 8-9am in the library. You will find more information about the different Service Jobs on our website.
NEW THIS YEAR!!! We are offering online signups for all Playground and Health Room jobs only (through Signup Genius) beginning Thursday, May 9th through Thursday May 16th. This will allow people interested in a Playground or Health Room job for next year the opportunity to sign up BEFORE the actual signups on May 17th. Furthermore, you would have the comfort of knowing exactly what your service job will be next year AND will not be required to attend the signup day on the morning of May 17th. If you're interested in signing up to be a Health Room or Playground Volunteer, please click here.
Thanks to all of our service volunteers that worked hard this year to make our school community a better place. We look forward to seeing you next Friday!
THANK YOU JOG-A-THON VOLUNTEERS!
I am sincerely grateful to our Jog-a-thon committee, especially our chairs Ellen O'Brien and Colleen O'Donnell, and the more than 50 volunteers who put on an outstanding even this year. While we are still finalizing the numbers, we do have some great preliminary results to share.
- Altogether our students ran 5,491 laps, which equals 915 miles!
- Mr. Murphy (36 laps) and Ms. Jones (34 laps) were our top staff runners.
- We have already reached, in pledges, the total amount of money raised last year.
Now we need your help to return your payments by May 17th in the envelopes that were sent home on Wednesday. Congratulations to the Jog-a-thon team!
Please volunteer for SHS Field Day - Friday, May 31st
This year the SHS Field Day will be held on Friday, May 31st from 8:30am to 3pm.
SHS Field day is a wonderful day of activities. The student families get to compete in a variety of fun events (volleyball, capture the flag, running relay, long jump, water relay, softball, soccer, kickball, and ping pong ball relay). It is a fantastic opportunity for the students to show their "Sportsmanship" and "Team Spirit" and for the parents to volunteer and participate in the fun!
We are looking for over 50 parent volunteers to assist with the day's activities, be event runners, and serve lunch.

- 8:15am to 11:30am - Morning Activities and Runners

From The Service Board - Class Community Coordinators for 2013-14 Needed
Thank you for those of you who took on the new role of Class Community Coordinator this year, the position has been an overwhelming success! Faculty and parents alike have provided positive feedback to the Administration. We are looking for volunteers who are interested in taking on this service job for the 2013-2014 academic year.
- Each Grade will have two "Class Community Coordinators" who will work as a team to support their Grade's Teaching Team and parent community; the specifics for the position will differ for each grade. The CCCs should be comfortable with email, SignUpGenius.com, interacting with Teachers, Administration, fellow parents and members of the Community. This positions runs from June of this year through June of next year.
If you would like to be considered for the role of CCC for a particular grade please email Connie Gray

Grateful Givings for our Troops
Sacred Heart School is working with Grateful Givings and the U.S.O. to help support our troops. Now until May 15th, students are asked to being items that help ease the travelling burdens of troops as they go to and from their important work in the military. Items include: disposable razors, travel-sized deodorant, travel-sized tooth paste, toothbrushes, granola bars, NutriGrain bars, hot chocolate pouches, and tea bags. Collection boxes will be in each classroom and a more complete list of items will be sent home during the drive. Please consider donating at least one item to help.
State of the School
Over the next few weeks I will be writing in the From the Heart about the items that were discussed at the State of the School meeting. I will break it in to pieces in order to avoid the From the Heart becoming too long.
First, I am proud to announce that
Rosemarie Engman was named the Outstanding Teacher of the Year and
Amy Davis the Outstanding Staff Member of the year.
Next year's calendar is already up on the website. Please refer to the school's Google calendar for the most up-to-date information.
Next year we will be adding a Family Life program in grades k-8 in partnership with you, their parents. This is a requirement of the archdiocese. As we introduce this program, there will be opportunities for parents to review the books that will be used in the classrooms. Also, we will host at least two gatherings for parents in which we will answer your questions about what the Catholic Church teaches about the various topics covered in the family life program so that you can more confidently answer your children's questions. We will also discuss at these presentations effective strategies for talking about these topics with your children and keeping open a healthy communication between parents and children. Parents may opt out of any part of the program to which they object.
As we approach the end of the year, it is important to remind parents that no one knows your child academically like his or her classroom teacher. This is why the classroom teachers are so fundamental to classroom placements for the following year. Our teachers work together to place your child in the classroom that will best meet his or her needs while also keeping an eye towards balance in terms or gender, academic strengths and styles, social issues (both in terms of students who may have trouble getting along and those who get along too well). I ask that you put your trust in your children's teachers in this important and challenging process. They, like you, have your child's best interest at heart and have spent most of a year getting to know each one.
- Mr. Burroughs
