Emergency Procedures and Systems

If the school needs to close for any reason or experiences any sort of emergency (snow, ice, power outage, etc.) we will use the school's Twitter account on the school website to announce this information. We only use the Twitter account for emergency information. You will not receive any other information on this account.

If you signed up to follow Sacred Heart School last year, you are all set. No need to do anything else. If you have not signed up but want to, follow these instructions. Text this phrase exactly "follow SacredHeartSch" to 40404. You should receive a response within a few second to a few minutes verifying that you are signed up. You will also likely receive an additional message inviting you to follow some celebrity's Twitter feed. You can ignore this message (or follow Kim Kardashian, if you choose).

In addition, I want to let everyone know that we have made some changes to our security system at the school and are working on some others. I do not want to go into detail about these changes, as that would defeat the value of some of them. But know that we take the safety of everyone at our school very seriously and are doing what we can to make the system even stronger.

Young Author Convention - January 31st

SHS is proud to announce that the Young Author Convention (YAC) will be January 31, 2013! YAY!!  This is a wonderful opportunity for your children to, "Yackety yack with authors and have them talk back!"  The YAC mission is to enrich literacy development through inviting professional authors, illustrators and story tellers to share and present real life experiences and connections.

We have wonderful guests this year!  Including our own 1st grade teacher Kristen Maloney!

We also have local authors: KristinMaloney_book

  • Samantha Vamos
  • Katherine Schlick Noe
  • Story teller/folksinger Adam Miller
  • Journalist Brian Calvert
  • Social Media expert Trey Wright

This year's group covers many facets of writing and sharing stories, news, customs, and history. What a unique experience for our children!

Three authors have offered to autograph books!  We have two different book ordering forms - here are the links to download the forms:

Order form for Kristen Maloney (k-4)

Order form for Samantha Vamos (k-3) and Katherine Schlick Noe (4-8)

The deadline for ordering books is tomorrow FRIDAY January 18, 2013.

We will not sell books the day of the event.

Auction Fund-a-Need

This year's auction will give everyone in attendance the opportunity to support the school in two important ways. First, we invite you to support the long-term needs of school by making a gift to the school's endowment. The endowment is an opportunity to make a gift to the school that will support the current operations and programs as well as those of all future generations of Sacred Heart Students and their families. Just like those pioneering families who built our wonderful school sixty years ago through their time, talent, and financial contributions, you have the opportunity to build something in the endowment that will still be here when your grandchildren and even their grandchildren attend Sacred Heart School.

You will also have the opportunity to raise your paddle for technology at Sacred Heart School. We are very blessed here with all of the wonderful technology resources that we have: computer pods, middle school laptops, ActivBoards in every classroom, security cameras, wireless connectivity throughout the school, subscriptions to Brain Pop, Discovery Learning, and more. But all of these wonderful resources need to be updated, upgraded, and replaced over time. So, the technology needs of the school will be our second Fund-a-Need opportunity.

Raise your paddle to support one or both. The choice is yours. Either way you are bidding to build a better school for your children. - Mr. Burroughs

Outerwear for Recess

With the weather getting colder, I would like to ask that you please send your children with either a sweatshirt or coat everyday for recess.  We had begun to notice before the break and have seen again since we've returned that there are always several students heading out to recess without anything but a polo shirt.  I have asked the teachers to remind students before recess about putting on a coat or sweatshirt, but have also told them that any student without either is to be sent to the front office where they will sit until the end of recess.  I have also asked Mrs. McLeod to do the same thing in the lunchroom; students who are not wearing either a sweatshirt or coat when students are dismissed to recess will be asked to sit in the front office.  Thank you in advance for your help.  - Ms. Gray

Change In Front Office Procedures

As some of you may have seen, we have had several new parents covering the front office for us during the day and, as mentioned above, you will begin to see our new development staff covering the front office as well.  With this is mind and to ensure the safety of all of your children, please do not be offended if someone at the front desk asks to see your identification when you are picking up your student.  As you can imagine, being new to this community, it takes a while before you can recognize the faces of all 200+ families!  Now is a good time to think about updating the list of people authorized to pick up your child(ren), particularly if there are people you no longer want to pick up your children, your list is out of date, or we do not have any information, please let us know.  Thank you in advance for your help.  - Mr. Burroughs

Vision & Hearing Screenings  (Volunteers Needed)

The week of February 4th all students in grades K-3, 5 and 7 will have their vision and hearing checked. If your child wears glasses, please make sure that they bring their glasses on the day of screening.

If you do *NOT* wish to have your child participate, we ask that you return the "opt-out" form to your homeroom teacher or the health room before Monday, February 4th.  This form only needs to be returned if your child is *NOT* to participate in the screenings.

Download the "Opt-Out" form here.

If a child is absent on their screening day, we will check their vision and hearing on a make-up day TBD.

We cannot do the screenings without your help!  Please check the schedule below to see when your child is scheduled to be screened and if you can volunteer for multiple time slots, we would greatly appreciate it!

Monday 2/04 - KA (8:50-9:50), KB (10:50-11:50am), 5A (8:50-9:50am), & 5B (10:50-11:50am)

Wednesday 2/06- 1B (8:50-9:50am), 2A (8:50-950am), and 3A (10:50-11:50am)

Thursday 2/07- 2B (10:50-11:50am), 3B (10:50-11:50am), 7th graders (9:50-10:50am)

If you are available to help, please e-mail Brianna Bennitt.

Admissions Updates for Sacred Heart School

Pre-K 2013

Our program is full for 2013-2014 but please let your friends with Pre-K aged children know that we would still love to hear from them so we can keep them informed of our Open Houses and other opportunities to see the school as we hope to have their students here for Kindergarten 2014!

Kindergarten 2013

Our testing/assessments are taking place on January 31st, February 1st, and February 2nd.   Contact Kerry to request your child's play date time on February 2nd.   We have allotted extra time for a few more assessments in that 1st round of testing so if you have any friends considering SHS Kindergarten, please let me know and I will be happy to contact them and get them included in the process.

2013 Grades 1-8

We have a few slots available in a few grade levels.   Applications for first round consideration for those slots are due Friday, February 8th.  Exact test/assessment dates have not been scheduled but applications (received by February 8th) will be included in the assessment process for grades with availability and applications for grade levels that are full will be placed into our wait pools accordingly.
- Thank you, Susana Knapp

Catholic Schools' Week Free Dress

Our annual opportunity to earn free dress on Student Appreciation Day (January 31) during Catholic School's Week is coming up the weekend of January 26 & 27. All students need to do to earn free dress is to attend any one of the three Masses at Sacred Heart Parish (5:00 Saturday, 9:00 or 11:00 Sunday) in full uniform to show our school pride. Students who do that will receive a free dress pass to be used on Student Appreciation Day. - Mr. Burroughs

Placement Request Policy (rev. January 2013)

The administration and staff of Sacred Heart School has revised our Placement Request Policy effective January, 2013.

We are now requiring families to complete a Placement Request form and provide specific academic and/or behavioral needs that justify their request for a specific teacher for their child.  The Placement Requests needs to be completed and returned to the Vice Principal by Friday, May 24th.  Requests made directly to classroom teachers will be forwarded to the administration so the Placement Request form can be completed.  Requests received after May 24th will not be considered.

Requests received by the May 24th deadline will be carefully considered as class lists are made; although, it is not possible to honor all requests.  Our goal is to create classrooms that are balanced academically, emotionally and socially.

Unforgettable Summer Canoe-Tripping Camp Opportunity

Parents, are you looking for an opportunity where your son or daughter can grow in independence and maturity in the great outdoors away from cell phones, video games and Facebook this summer?

Boys and girls, young men and women, are you looking for an opportunity to have fun spending the summer with others your age while canoeing and camping?

If so, Camp Wabun is just the ticket. Wabun provides wonderful canoe-tripping camp experiences like no other for boys and girls ages 10 through 18. In operation since 1933, Wabun draws campers from all parts of the United States, Canada and around the world. The camp website provides more information about the camp and how it operates. Be sure to watch the videos on the camp website which give both parent and camper testimonials about why Wabun is so awesome. Our sons have enjoyed this camp the last 4 summers and are looking forward to another Wabun adventure this coming summer. The camp director will be in town on Sunday, Mar. 3 at 1:00 pm to do a presentation on the camp and answer questions for interested parents and potential campers. If you would like to learn more, please e-mail Angela Traynor. She can provide you with location information about the upcoming Wabun presentation and answer any questions.
