A Video for Advent
As we celebrate the final days of Advent, here is a great video to watch, alone or with your family. It is a very contemporary but moving look at what it means to follow Jesus. I hope that you enjoy it. Merry Christmas to you! - Mr. Burroughs
Message from the Health Room
Dear Parents,
Winter has arrived bringing with it a flourish of rain and cold winds. With this weather comes, the bugs that cause illnesses. We need your help to keep all of our students warm and healthy.
Recess is typically outdoors so it is especially important to dress for the weather. Always send your child to school with a warm coat and even gloves and a hat. Remind your children that staying dry and warm will help keep them healthy. Please let your child know it is your expectation that s(he) will wear the coat you send. If your child cannot avoid the temptation of the puddles, please keep an extra pair of pants and socks in the backpack.
As always it is especially important to maintain healthy habits of eating right, getting plenty fluids and rest and continuing to wash hands regularly.
If your child does get sick, please let us know. Attached is our policy on illness and guidelines for when your child should stay at home. Our goal is for all students and staff to stay healthy and happy!
- Thank You for your help! Ann Marie Thompson
Responses to your Survey Feedback
As a result of the recent surveys we have been discussing, considering, and changing various things. As we make decisions or changes, we will keep you informed about them here in the From the Heart. One simple, but important thing that was point out in a survey response was that one of our drinking fountains in the gym was not working properly. I am happy to report that it has been fixed.
Over the last three weeks we added 5 minute of extra time to the primary lunch time (and subtracted 5 minutes from recess). I asked all of our lunch room supervisors, both staff and parents, to complete a brief survey each day about this change. Overwhelmingly staff and parent volunteers felt that the addition of the 5 minutes to lunch had not made a positive difference. Most students were now finished eating well before the end of lunch and they were much more restless. The same students were observed to be eating after the other students had been dismissed, even with the extra time (which was also accompanied by not having students led prayer, having no question of the day, etc.). We worked to maximize the eating time that our primary students had available to them. Since it does not seem to have made a positive difference in terms of accommodating our slower eaters or reducing the amount of food that is thrown away, we will be returning to our previous lunch and recess schedule after the break.
The old yellow big toy in the lower lot that has been taped-off for most of this year is being replaced. Thanks to your fundraising last year, we will be demolishing the old big toy and replacing it with a brand new one. Our plan is that this will take place during the mid-Winter Break. The new big toy is designed to be more interesting for our older students. We will also be putting in benches for both the lower and upper lots near the big toys.
Important Steps for Kindergarten 2013 Enrollment
It is time to think about Kindergarten for next year! Please make sure you have sent in your child's application accordingly. If your student is currently in our Pre-K program, you do no need to "re-apply" but must confirm to our office via email if you would like to apply for Kindergarten. Please note the following process will occur upon receipt of application/confirmation of interest:
- Kindergarten testing/assessment dates are January 31, February 1, and 2nd. As always, every student applying for Kindergarten must go through this process including those currently in our SHS Pre-K program.
- Over our Christmas Break, you will receive an email letter from SHS with the details for this process including instructions of when to call the front office to schedule your assessment times. If your student is currently in Pre-K and you have confirmed K interest, we will automatically schedule your student's assessment during their regular school hours here at SHS.
- The week of February 4th, we plan to send out our acceptance /wait list letters along with an intention letter and Kindergarten registration fee that will need to be returned to Sacred Heart in order to secure your slot.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about this process. My telephone number is (425)451-1773 extension 156 and email address is sknapp@sacredheart.org.

Need Your Feedback on "Hot Topic" Discussion Forums
Coming up soon are some evening discussion forums with the school counselor, hosted by Kari Boyd and Parents Club. Specific dates, time and location are TBD. These discussion nights are mainly to provide information and spread awareness on various "hot topics" throughout grade level groups. These beneficial discussion nights will offer parents an opportunity to learn, ask questions, and chat with other parents in their child's grade level.
**Please help select books/topics by completing this survey!
Sacred Heart Staff Appreciation Book
We would like to let you know about the new "Sacred Heart Staff Appreciation Book", that is will be available at the front desk year round. From time-to-time we all like to do nice things for our SHS Staff (Christmas, Birthday's, a thank you), but we have no idea what they might like. The Staff Appreciation Book will be a great resource for you. You can access this information online by clicking this link.
If you have any questions please e-mail Jennifer Joffe the Sacred Heart Community Coordinator.
Lost and Found
Our closet is now completely full of unmarked clothing. Please take a moment over the next week (during December 18th Advent program would be perfect) to look for any of your child's missing items. During Christmas break, all unclaimed clothing will go to a wonderful program called CARE that services refugee families relocated into the Tukwila school district. As always, marked uniform pieces are sent back to your students via their classrooms and unmarked uniform pieces are placed directly into our used uniform closet.
