December Shoe Liturgy
It is hard to believe that November has arrived; here at Sacred Heart School that means it is time to begin thinking about our annual Shoe Liturgy. This year's Shoe Liturgy is scheduled for Thursday, December 6th at 9:00am and will be celebrated in conjunction with mass for the Feast of St. Nicholas. For those of you new to Sacred Heart, the Shoe Liturgy is a special tradition at Sacred Heart School with the idea being that our students do service to earn 'money' to pay for their favorite pair of shoes. Once paid in 'shoe currency', students then give these shoes to children in need.
At Sacred Heart, we have formed a partnership with Treehouse, an organization that serves foster children in King County. Each year we ask our students to perform services to pay for the shoes they donate; the practice has been that students purchase a pair of shoes that is the same size they wear. Between now and December, students can work at home, help a neighbor rake leaves, clean out the garage or help decorate for Christmas to earn money for a pair of shoes. You, as the parent, determine when to render 'payment'. The important part of this tradition is that students learn that their service helped benefit someone in need.
On December 6th, students will bring their shoes to school. During the Feast of St. Nicholas, the Student Council will call students by grade level to come up and place their shoes on the steps of the sanctuary; once we are done, Fr. Steve will bless the shoes.
Some specifics we would ask you to remember and details to honor are:
- Shoes stay in the original box
- Do not wrap the box
- Do not include any candy, or other edible items; the warehouse utilized by
- Treehouse is not air conditioned and items have melted, soiling the shoes
- If you wish to include something, we recommend including a pair of socks
- Size: purchase a pair of shoes that fits your students.
Please do not hesitate to email me any questions you might have about this great tradition. We hope to see you at our Ninth Annual Shoe Liturgy.
Blessings - Ms Gray
Pre-K Program 2013-2014
We are preparing for our Open House and would like to have a clear picture of the availability we will have to offer for next year's Pre-K program. If you have a child that will be 4 by August 31, 2013 please take a moment and email Susana Knapp by Tuesday, November 13th with one of the following options:
- We strongly wish for our student to be in the 2013-2014 Pre-K program
- We are not sure if we want our student to be in the 2013-2014 Pre-K program
- We do not want our child to be in the 2013-2014 Pre-K program
This simple advice will be extremely helpful and of course, you are welcome to advise further detail (i.e. not attending Pre-K as we need full day program or waiting for the following year to have my student start SHS in Kindergarten.)
Open House
Sacred Heart's annual Open House will be held this year on Tuesday, November 13 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. This is a great opportunity for you to invite friends, neighbors, and relatives to come and see our school community. Prospective families will have the opportunity to learn more about our school and the admissions process. The evening will include guided campus tours and teachers in all grades will be available to speak about their programs including pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, 1-5th grades. We will have a middle school (grades 6-8) presentation from 6-7 p.m. and encourage our current Sacred Heart parents in grades 4 and 5 to attend as well as new families interested in SHS.
Please contact Susana Knapp if you know a family interested in SHS as she would love to speak with them, personally send them an invitation, and watch for them that evening. Your friends are some of our best future SHS families! Also, if you would like to be a Parent Tour Guide that evening, please contact Susana and she will be so happy to have you in this fun and special role! Training will take place earlier that same day and she will let you know details accordingly.
Picture Retakes
If you missed individual pictures last month, picture retakes are Thursday, November 15th. Order forms are at the front office.
Scrip is on Hiatus
In case you missed the special bulletin sent on Monday, the scrip program is currently on a hiatus as we transfer over to an online system. Monthly orders will still be filled as well as orders placed prior to Monday. New orders will not be filled next week as usual, but as soon as we have the new system up and running. - Mr. Burroughs
Policy for Student Medications at School
SHS follows WA State code that all student medications must have a completed Authorization for Medication Form signed by both the child's physician and parent.
This policy applies to both prescription and all over the counter medications such as anti-histamines, cough drops Tylenol etc.
The completed Authorization for Medication Form and medications must be turned into the health room where they will be kept and administered by staff only.
There is an exception when it comes to inhalers. WA State permits inhalers to be carried and self-administered by a student if both the physician and parent give permission on the Authorization for Medication Form. Inhalers must have a prescription label affixed.
If you have any questions, please email Ann Marie Thompson.
SLE's
If you have not yet had the opportunity to do so, please take a few minutes to review our proposed new Schoolwide Learning Expectations. Your feedback is greatly appreciated. Please e-mail your comments to Mr. Burroughs.
