Open House
Sacred Heart's annual Open House will be held this year on Tuesday, November 13 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. This is a great opportunity for you to invite friends, neighbors, and relatives to come and see our school community. Prospective families will have the opportunity to learn more about our school and the admissions process. The evening will include guided campus tours and teachers in all grades will be available to speak about their programs including pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, 1-5th grades. We will have a middle school (grades 6-8) presentation from 6-7 p.m. and encourage our current Sacred Heart parents in grades 4 and 5 to attend as well as new families interested in SHS.
Please contact Susana Knapp if you know a family interested in SHS as she would love to speak with them, personally send them an invitation, and watch for them that evening. Your friends are some of our best future SHS families! Also, if you would like to be a Parent Tour Guide that evening, please contact Susana and she will be so happy to have you in this fun and special role! Training will take place earlier that same day and she will let you know details accordingly.
Food Drive
At the end of this month, we have two great ways to help feed hungry children and adults in our community. On October 29 and 30 we will host a food drive at two local QFC markets. Students in grades 5-8 are encouraged to participate. Sign up for a shift or two today at Food Drive Sign Up . We also need adult chaperones to help out. Student volunteers distribute fliers listing the most-needed items and collect the donations as shoppers leave the store.
In celebration of Halloween, students are invited to bring in one or more non-perishable food items to school on October 31 in exchange for free dress on October 31st. All food donations benefit the Renewal Food Bank, the only food bank in Bellevue. Most needed items include: canned fruit and vegetables, canned soup, peanut butter, ramen noodles, canned tuna, and dry beans.
Accreditation
Sacred Heart School is accredited by the Western Catholic Educational Association. This year we are preparing our self-study report in preparation for a visit by the accreditation team next year. As a part of our self-study process, the school staff has been reviewing and renewing our Student Learning Expectations. Otherwise known as SLE's, these are the broad goals that guide the faith, educational, and character formation that we provide here at Sacred Heart School.
Over the last few weeks the staff has created a first draft of revised SLE's. Now we would like your input. For those who were unable to attend the SLE feedback sessions today, please review the SLEs here and e-mail your comments to Mr. Burroughs. However you can participate, we would greatly value the opportunity to hear from you in person and engage in dialogue with you about the goals that should shape instruction for all of our students.
- Mr. Burroughs and Ms. Gray
Intermediate (3rd - 5th) Conferences
As we shared with you in an earlier FTH, our 3rd - 5th grade students were all asked to create their own S.M.A.R.T. goals. As these teachers have been preparing for conferences, they have asked that each student to be prepared to share their S.M.A.R.T. goal with their parent/s, what they are doing to achieve their goal and the progress they have made so far. Your students worked hard to created goals that were realistic, yet meaningful. They have also taken the job of tracking their progress seriously; I believe you will all be impressed. - Ms. Gray
Middle School (6th - 8th) Conferences
Just a few reminders about middle school conferences on Monday and Tuesday:
- There are no set appointments for middle school conferences. Middle school teachers will be set up in the gym throughout the regularly scheduled conference times. Please go there with your child to meet with them.
- If a teacher is already in a conference, you may go and meet with another teacher or take a seat and wait until the teacher is available.
- Students are expected to meet with the two teachers they identified in their homerooms as being the classes with the greatest opportunity for growth. They may meet with any other teachers, too. During the conference, students will also be asked to discuss their SMART Goal and their progress toward achieving it.
- Conferences will be 10 minutes (up to 15 minutes if no one else is waiting to meet with the teacher). Conferences that will need longer time will be scheduled with the teacher at that time for a later date. This will help to ensure that the wait time for conferences is not too long and that lengthier matters receive the time that they need to be discussed.
- Teacher breaks will take place for dinner between 5 and 6 p.m. on Monday and for lunch on Tuesday between 12:30 and 1:15. Conferences will not take place during these times. Please do not arrive for conferences less than 15 minutes before a break time. We need to make sure that the teachers have a break to stretch, eat, and rejuvenate for more conferences.
Safe Environment Training for Volunteers

Policy for Student Medications at School:
- SHS follows WA State code that all student medications must have a completed Authorization for Medication form signed by both the child's physician and parent.
- This policy applies to both prescription and all over the counter medications such as anti-histamines, cough drops Tylenol etc.
- The completed Authorization for Medication form and medications must be turned into the health room where they will be kept and administered by staff only.
- The only exception to this rule is for inhalers. WA State permits inhalers to be carried and self-administered by a student if authorized by both the physician and parent.
