Accreditation

Sacred Heart School is accredited by the Western Catholic Educational Association. This year we are preparing our self-study report in preparation for a visit by the accreditation team next year. As a part of our self-study process, the school staff has been reviewing and renewing our Student Learning Expectations. Otherwise known as SLE's, these are the broad goals that guide the faith, educational, and character formation that we provide here at Sacred Heart School.

Over the last few weeks the staff has created a first draft of revised SLE's. Now we would like your input. We would like to invite any interested parents to participate in one of two feedback sessions next week on Thursday, October 25th. One session will be in the morning at 8:30 a.m. and the other in the evening at 6:00 p.m. Both will take place in the Moore Theater. Those who cannot attend either session will have an opportunity to comment by e-mail. However, we would greatly value the opportunity to hear from you in person and engage in dialogue with you about the goals that should shape instruction for all of our students. - Mr. Burroughs

Middle School Conferences - Clarification

Over the next two weeks during their homeroom classes, middle school students will be identifying two classes that offer them the greatest opportunity for growth (e.g., language arts, math, Spanish, music). The students will use data (e.g., test scores, grades, number of missing assignments) to help them make their selection. After identifying the two classes and confirming their choice with their homeroom teacher, that information will be sent on to the teachers they have identified as well as to you, their parents. During middle school conferences, parents of middle school students must meet with the two teachers  their child identified and may meet with any others that they choose.

Safe Environment Training for Volunteers

Sacred Heart Parish and School will offer a Safe Environment Training class on November 7th, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. here in the Moore Theater. Volunteers who work with children need to take this important class. To register for this class, or a different one, follow this link.

Three-Minute Mediations

Trying to find time in your busy life for prayer? If you have 3 minutes, try the daily 3-minute meditations from Loyola Press that are linked to the school and parish websites.

Food Drive

At the end of the month we have two great ways to help feed hungry children and adults in our community. On October 29 and 30 we will host a food drive at three local QFC markets. Students in grades 5-8 are encouraged to participate. We also need adult chaperones to help out. Student volunteers distribute fliers listing the most-needed items and collect the donations as shoppers leave the store. Sign up for a shift or two today. In celebration of Halloween, students are invited to bring in one or more non-perishable food items to school on October 31 in exchange for free dress. All food donations benefit the Renewal Food Bank, the only food bank in Bellevue. Most needed items include: canned fruit and vegetables, canned soup, peanut butter, ramen noodles, canned tuna, and dry beans.

Reading Opportunities at Sacred Heart School

At Sacred Heart School we work together to meet the needs of all kinds of readers. In our classrooms we have a fantastic reading program that we piloted last year, Lead 21, which integrates nonfiction reading in science and social studies topics as well as fiction in a variety of genre. This program meets students at their instructional level, and pulls the whole class together for the focus of each unit. Most grade levels also have independent book reports and requirements that are worked on throughout the year.

Update from Kari Boyd

What a wonderful first month it has been as the school counselor at Sacred Heart! Guidance lessons are now underway in every K-5 classroom weekly. Students are being introduced to the curriculum of Kelso's Choices, a conflict management program that teaches important ways to solve small problems using Kelso's Choices wheel of choices. This program encourages students to use two of Kelso's Choices when dealing with a SMALL problem and if they are experiencing a BIG problem, to report it to an adult. SMALL problems are ones that every K-5 student is smart enough and strong enough to solve on their own, using Kelso's Choices.

October is Anti-Bullying month and with the hard work and help from our dedicated Student Council, 5th-8th grade students attended an assembly on Wednesday October 17th called, "The Power of a Bystander." The student council performed skits that showed different kinds of bullying that can happen, including verbal, physical, and cyber bullying while incorporating the important and powerful role of the bystander in all of these situations.

Another idea that students are being introduced to is the acronym of: THINK! We are encouraging students to THINK before they speak, or act, and ask themselves, is it True, Helpful, Inspiring, Necessary, or Kind? This is a great tool to start implementing at home as well, it can be very effective.  If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me

Teen Secret Communication 101 - The Science of Relationships

From the Parish

Dear Parents and Friends,

The church plants are thirsty and need to be watered about twice a week. If you could volunteer to help out, it would be a huge help. There is no special time so any couple of days would work. Please contact Sr. Mary Jo if you are able to stop off in the morning or afternoon to water plants. A team would be great.

Peace - Sr. MaryJo
