Welcome our incoming Chair, Donna Rosi

Donna Rosi is the General Manager of Grays Harbor Radio (KDUX/KXXK/KXRO/KWOK) and has been with Grays Harbor Radio since 1992. She has served on the board for many years, including being a past chair of the Grays Harbor Chamber of Commerce. Currently, she is the past chair of United Way of Grays Harbor and an active member of East Grays Harbor Rotary. As a rotary member, she has worked on events generating nearly one-hundred thousand dollars to support local charities, "Hoptoberfest," a fundraiser providing scholarships for East Grays Harbor area students and "Pair of Hearts Ball," supporting the Children's Advocacy Center of Grays Harbor.

"I look forward to serving as chair this year. Mike O'Dell, outgoing chair, leaves the organization in great shape. He showed tremendous leadership during a year filled with transition and change. My goal is to build on that solid foundation he helped establish. I'm grateful to work with such a strong board that have set a course focusing on several exciting initiatives to support local business in addition to developing a more proactive approach to attract new business and industry. Grays Harbor has a lot to offer and this will lead to more opportunity for family wage jobs in our area. We live and work in a great community and our future looks bright," said Donna.

With the support of Donna as our chair, and the rest of the board, we look forward to another successful year at Greater Grays Harbor, Inc.

Expo and the Bite of Grays Harbor are back!
by James Messer, GGHI Membership Coordinator

Like last year, we will have great food, prizes, entertainment, and plenty of vendors, but we will also be introducing new programming, including: do-it-yourself home repair workshops, home energy efficiency presentations, ballroom dancing instruction, culinary competitions and demonstrations, and much more.

This year we have added new elements that will appeal to everyone in the family. For the adults, Home Depot will conduct two do-it-yourself workshops. The first involves pallet refurbishing, where you can learn how to create a wine rack out of an old pallet, while the second workshop will provide instruction on how to install a ceiling fan in your home.

Greater Grays Harbor Energy will be presenting two energy efficiency workshops which will instruct homeowners on ways to make their house more comfortable and to hold heat longer, through insulation and air sealing. For those looking for a new hobby, there will be a ballroom dance demonstration located in the Commons. Lastly, if you are looking for some entertainment, we will be hosting a cupcake competition between Aberdeen, Hoquiam, and Montesano High Schools. Watch as the judges choose their favorite based on presentation and taste.

For the children, we will have several kids' activities involving face painting, an inflatable football toss, and a painting project from Home Depot.

At the Bite of Grays Harbor, you can find some of your favorite local restaurants serving up some of their specialties; such as Nancy's Bakery and her individual sized marionberry pies, Clark's burgers, Deidra's deli and her famous taco soup, and a whole lot more.

If you have not yet signed up to be a vendor at Expo there is still time. For those who sign up before March 6 the price for Expo is $250, after that date the price will go up to $275. Call Angela Endres at 532-7888 for additional details. Otherwise, check out Expo and the Bite of Grays Harbor from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. on March 21st at the Aberdeen High School Gym and Commons.
Harbor Card Consumer Feedback
by James Messer, GGHI Membership Coordinator

With over 150 Harbor Cards in circulation, we asked for some feedback from the consumer on how the card is working for them.

I interviewed someone who had purchased their card at the launch of the program, back in December, and he had many great things to say about the card. So far, he has been able to use the Harbor Card at six participating businesses, Deidra's Deli, Domino's Pizza, GH Wine Sellars, Greater Grays Harbor, Inc., Jay's Farm Stand, and Levee Lumber, saving him a recorded total of $71.64. In just 3 months he has saved seven times his initial $10 investment! That shows a great value for cardholders.

Starting March 1st, there will be an added incentive for cardholders in the form of a contest, called Harbor Card Bingo. Bingo cards will be distributed to sales outlets and available at Greater Grays Harbor, Inc. To enter you must first visit 4 to 5 businesses at any one line on your Bingo card to receive a sticker or stamp. Once you collect a Bingo you can turn your card in at Greater Grays Harbor, Inc. One lucky winner will be drawn to receive a $100 gift certificate to a participating business of their choice.

Visit www.graysharbor.org/harbor-card to learn more about the program.

Ambassador of the Quarter
by James Messer, GGHI Membership Coordinator

Congratulations to Garrett Johannes on being named the Ambassador of the Quarter (Q4). Garrett has been an Ambassador for 3 years and is heavily involved with the group. He works as a Customer Service Representative and handles Marketing for Durney Insurance, Inc. in Hoquiam.

"Garrett Johannes was voted Ambassador of the quarter, because of his heavy involvement with the community and GGHI," said Georgia Bravos, chair of the Ambassadors. "Garrett is very quiet about his involvement, but he has scheduled and facilitated ribbon cuttings and Business of the Month presentations, regularly attends Business After Hours, Business Forums, and other GGHI events, and everyone agrees that he is a pleasure to work with."

Thank you, Garrett, for your commitment to Greater Grays Harbor, Inc. and our community.

Cracking the Strip on Your Phantom Power Load
by Rick Jackson, GGH Energy Specialist

Putting your laptop (or other electronic device) on a power strip that can be turned off (or turns off automatically) can maximize savings; the transformer in the AC adapter draws power continuously, even when the device is not plugged in to the adapter.
Screen "savers" do not save energy. Use automatic switching to sleep mode or simply turn it off.

Cost: $10 smart power strip
Time: 2 minutes
Skills needed: none
Estimated Savings: $5-$6 per month per power strip (assumes a minimum of 6 pieces of office equipment are plugged into that strip)

When buying power strips remember to SHOP THE HARBOR FIRST!

Small Business Gets a Boost
by James Messer, GGHI Membership Coordinator

Promising tribal and rural entrepreneurs on the Washington Coast will have a great opportunity presented to them with the launch of the Washington Coast Works Sustainable Small Business Competition, funded in part by the US Department of Agriculture.

"After an open application period, 10 semifinalists will be chosen to participate in an intensive business development training with the Center for Inclusive Entrepreneurship (CIE). From the 10 semi-finalists, winners will receive $10,000 in seed funding."

Grays Harbor is among the communities chosen to participate in the competition.
