Economic Development News
by Dru Garson, GGHI CEO
|
This month our CEO, Dru Garson, along with representatives from the Satsop Business Park, Wishkah River Distillery, Quinault Beach Resort & Casino, Small Business Development Center, Washington Sea Grant, Greater Grays Harbor Energy, Grays Harbor College, and Pacific Mountain Workforce Development Council- Business to Business attended the 2014 Regional Economic Forecast and Innovation Expo.
One important message taken from the Expo came from keynote speaker Dr. Bill Conerly, economist and senior fellow at the National Center for Policy Analysis, who spoke on the world economy, and the growth we should expect to see in 2015 and 2016.
Although, he believes that businesses should be prepared for the worst, with a 12 percent risk of recession within the next couple years, businesses shouldn't do too much handwringing. Consumers have been increasing spending, about on pace with their incomes. While spending isn't at an all-time high, consumers are no longer "hiding in a hole and trying to imagine a disaster coming," Conerly said.
"You'll probably see the increase in consumer spending more in tourism. I'm expecting Washington state and Oregon to do a little better than the nation, so that should help," Conerly said. "In terms of housing, I think we're going to see a lot of strength in the housing sector nationally. That will affect your wood products industry with the demand."
Conerly noted that the nation is on track to produce one million new homes. He said 1.2 to 1.4 million new homes need to be created to accommodate for the growing population.
"We need to start producing more and I think we're going to be doing that," Conerly said.

United Way Gala
by Mike O'Dell, GGHI Chair
|
|
December is always one of my favorite times of the year as the Christmas and Holiday season brings out the spirit of giving. As I look ahead to 2015, I always look forward to the upcoming United Way Gala event at Quinault Beach Resort & Casino, this year on Saturday, January 24th.
Being involved with United Way is a fantastic way to give back to your community as United Way of Grays Harbor only funds programs for people from Grays Harbor and Pacific County. A local Board of Directors and community volunteers meet each year to discuss local needs and look at a network of programs that will reach the most people and have the greatest impact for our communities. Some programs are large and others are selected because they are meeting needs in parts of the county that do not have adequate access to support. Ninety-nine cents of every dollar stays right here, too!
United Way of Grays Harbor is committed to investing in programs that make our communities stronger and meet critical needs across our area. This year they are supporting twenty-three programs ranging from senior nutrition, youth development and crisis services for children, families and adults. United Way of Grays Harbor reaches hundreds of people throughout Grays Harbor and Pacific Counties, and focuses on three areas; Health & Self-Sufficiency, Basic Needs and Education.
Mark your calendar for January 24th and attend the United Way Gala. It is a great way to give back to those in need in your community!

Power Up with GGH Energy
by Rick Jackson, GGH Energy Specialist
|
Energy tip #1:
Fires can make a home warmer and cozier on cold days. Remembering to shut the damper when the fire is completely out will prevent warm, treated air from escaping through the chimney, thus keeping your home warm, and inhibiting heating appliances from working overtime (that's one thing that runs your bills so high).
Tip:
Putting a draft balloon into the chimney will stop excess drafts, and serve as a reminder to open/close the flue. However, (and this is VERY important) remember to open the damper, and remove the balloon before making another fire to keep dangerous smoke and Carbon Monoxide out of the house. The cost for a draft balloon is around $49.99, and you can purchase them locally!

Benefit of the Month!
by James Messer, GGHI Membership Coordinator

The new year is fast approaching and the time is coming to print our 2015 Business Directory. Have you made any changes to your office staff, changed locations, phone numbers, or wish to be listed under another category? Please inform Angela or James of these changes, at 532-7888, by Friday, January 23rd to give us time to update the information in the publication. We distribute around 2,500 copies throughout the year, to visitors and locals, and it is important to us that we have accurate information.
