Head and Neck Trauma in Extreme Sports

A report at the 2014 American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons has shown that the recent popularity of extreme sports has produced a dangerously high risk for severe head and neck injuries.  The seven sports studied over 11 years were featured in the popular X Games and included surfing, mountain biking, motorcross, skateboarding, snowboarding, snowmobiling, and snow skiing.  Of the 4 million injuries reported, 11.3% were head and neck injuires of which, 83% were to the head with the majority of these occuring to teens and young adults.
Other findings included:
  • The sports with the highest incidents of head and neck injuries were skateboarding, snowboarding, and skiing.
  • Concussion was the most common injury.
  • Skateboarders had the highest incident of skull fractures.
  • Surfers had the highest incident of neck fracture.

With increasing exposure on both television and youth culture it appears that this trend is only going to rise over the next few years.  Please be sure your friends or loved ones who participate in these sports takes the proper precautions including mandatory helmet use.  Helmet use has been shown as the most effective way to limit the potentially severe effects of head and neck trauma.

Video of the Month

This month's video explores one of the most basic but most effective movement patterns for leg and back strength - the squat.  The best thing about using kettlebells is that you can do this at home without a squat rack or barbell.  Try this at home and, if you need advice, we can check your technique at the next visit.

Dr. Cohen Mentioned in Dynamic Chiropractic Article

Dr. Cohen was recently cited as a resource for an article in Dynamic Chiropractic Magazine, a bimonthly professional publication that reaches nearly 50,000 chiropractors throughout the country.  The article discussed exercise techniques for improving shoulder mobility and Dr. Cohen was referenced for an exercise derived from his unique skills he learned in Europe.  Dr. Cohen is the only chiropractor in North America who is certified in this previously exclusively European technique called Vojta (pronounced VOY-TA), which uses treatments based on human movements developed while a baby and converted to be used for adults.
As always, thank you for your support and referrals.  For more information about or services please visit our website at www.CohenHayduChiro.com.
Sincerely,
