Exercise and Falls

A recent review of the medical literature has shown that an exercise program, particularly for older persons, can reduce their risk of falls by 32% and their risk from an injury from a fall by  29%. These numbers are significant and shows that balance, strength, and coordination can be improved at any age.  An exercise program that prevents falls can greatly reduce the number of fractures that are so common with these types of trauma.  We recommend low impact exercises such as Tai Chi and lighter forms of yoga, both of which are low stress on the body but have a tremendous impact on the balance system.  You can find a variety of yoga and Tai Chi classes in many locations including private gyms, senior centers, or therapy clinics.

Exercise of the Month - "The Burpee"
This month's exercise is "the Burpee" which is a great total body strength and cardio challenge. We recommend at least 3 sets of 10 repetitions. Try this exercise and let us know how it works for you.
