Greetings!

Welcome to the July issue of our monthly newsletter.  Summer is in full swing and we are loving the nice weather.  Its a busy time for us, as the most common injuries we see this time of year are back strains from yard work and exercise injuries from our athletes competing in running and cycling events.  Remember, if you are injured, the medical science shows that getting treatment as soon as possible can significantly reduce your recovery time.  Call us if you get hurt and we will see you the same day!  Enjoy this month's issue.
70% of Americans on Prescription Drugs
Researchers from the Mayo Clinic have released a report stating that 70% of Americans are on at least one prescription drug, 50% are on at least two prescriptions, and a startling 20% are on at least 5 prescriptions.  The researchers report that antidepressants, pain killers, and antibiotics are the most commonly prescribed medications.  These numbers are staggering, especially when combined with a 2011 study stating that over 4 billion prescriptions were written in the U.S. that year.  Interestingly, one of the most commonly prescribed medications is an antidepressant which suggests that mental health is a prominent issue in America.  The fact that opioids, a powerful pain medication, is so commonly dispersed is also alarming, particularly because they are highly addictive. American medicine needs to shift its thinking to a natural approach and distance itself from treatment decisions influenced largely by the pharmaceutical industry.  We recommend all of our patients review and research their prescription medications with their family physician to see if there is an effective natural alternative.
Exercise(s) of the Month - 5 Posture Exercises muscles
The July exercise(s) of the month features 5 good posture exercises that can help relieve the pain associated with long hours of sitting at work.  Perform these exercises 3x a week and you will feel better throughout your day.  Let us know how it works for you and as always, stop if you feel pain when doing this, or any other exercise.

Smoking and Back Pain

smoke A study presented at the 2013 Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons that stated patients who quit smoking had significant decreases in back pain and recovered more quickly from acute episodes.  We have suspected this clinically for years but the evidence is becoming overwhelming that smoking worsens back pain.  The suspected reason for this is that smoking increases the general level of inflammation in the body, is more popular among a more sedentary population, and reduces the healing of injuries.  If you have back pain and smoke consider quitting as soon as possible. The medical research is clear that you will feel better.
