Walking for a Healthy Heart
A recent study in the American Heart Association journal has stated that brisk walking can lower your risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol as much as running. This surprising study is a relief to researchers and patients alike, as many are unable to get the benefits of running due to obesity, back pain, or a hip or knee problem. This large study examined the health of nearly 45,000 walkers and runners and concluded that with similar energy expenditures the resulting health benefits to the heart were very similar. Walking is the simplest form of exercise and anybody can do it, no gym membership required. We recommend 30-60 minutes of brisk walking at least 3x/week. Interestingly, another large study published this year states that walking also significantly reduces the effects of back pain. Our take on this...get out and walk! |

Exercise of the Month - "The Baby Get-Up"
The May exercise of the month features "The Baby Get-Up", a great exercise for the side muscles of the core but also is excellent for the shoulder. This video is instructed by our friend and mentor, Dr. Craig Liebenson. Let us know how it works for you and as always, stop if you feel pain when doing the exercise.
