Greetings!

Welcome to the April issue of our monthly newsletter.  After some tough March weather we are really looking forward to some spring activities.  The clinic has been busy with patients looking for "tune-ups" to be sure they are ready for increased outdoor activity and exercise.  Now is the time for your spinal check-ups and movement screens so you can avoid injury this spring.  Enjoy this month's issue.
Chiropractic Patients Less Likely to Have Spine Surgery
spine surgery A recent study in the prestigious journal Spine has shown that patients who receive chiropractic care are far less likely to have surgery. The study examined almost 2000 patients who were injured at work and found that approximately 9% received surgery for their injury.  Of those who had surgery, 42% who treated with a medical doctor vs. only 1.5% of those who saw a chiropractor went on to surgery.  This is a serious and significant disparity.  We are finding that the current medical model of back pain still relies on unnecessary surgery as a treatment for back pain.  Chiropractic, on the other hand, is highly effective in reducing surgery rates for back pain and in most cases less than 2% of all chiropractic patients need to have a more invasive procedure.  This is another powerful scientific study that should encourage all patients with back pain to treat with chiropractic first.
Exercise of the Month - "The Brettzel"
muscles
The April exercise of the month features "The Brettzel" a great spine and full body stretch that incorporates breathing to gain flexibility and muscle relaxation.  This exercise was developed by our FMS colleague Brett Jones and obviously, was named after him. Teaching this video is Grey Cook, co-founder of the FMS system.  Let us know how it works for you and as always, stop if you feel pain or significant discomfort when doing the exercise.
