 A WORD FROM OUR COMMISSIONER

It is up to everyone to make every week's games and training the best for all the players in our region. It will take the effort of the coaches, parents (friends and family) and all the region's volunteers (you can be one too) to make it happen. We have the power to do this! It will take big smiles, positive comments and lots of cheering. You can make every player a winner every week.

The history of why we now have Kids Zone KidsZone

Kids Zone was the "brainchild" of then Region 234 Commissioner Steve Hamann in 2000. Steve sensed during his field "walkarounds" that the environment was changing. There was more tension, more shouting (definitely more attitude) and less fun than the Region's parents and volunteers had come to expect.

A man of action, Steve came up with a plan that he believed would remind parents that their behavior at games is crucial to setting a good example. His plan included three-inch Kids Zone buttons distributed to parents and coaches and field signs to remind visitors of appropriate conduct. In Region 234 it quickly became obvious to parents that it was up to them to ensure good sideline behavior or suffer the consequences.
Steve approached staff members at the AYSO National Office to help him get his plan under way. The National Board of Directors (NBOD) and National Office staff members provided partial funding and support to implement the plan and that, as we say, was the beginning. The plan was for Region 234 to pilot the program that fall and then make the project ready for national implementation the following year. Steve and Region 234 did an exemplary job and provided the NBOD and National Office staff with reports, ideas and help to launch the new program.
Since its inception, we have added a Kids Zone Parent Pledge and other assorted materials and paraphernalia. Kids Zone does help in controlling negative sideline behavior, but it is not a magic potion, it takes continual reinforcement and commitment to the ideals of good sportsmanship and the AYSO philosophies.
Players play!!!   Run around - Have fun - Make their own decisions!
Coaches coach!!! Set the line up - Motivate the players - Let them play the game.
Parents cheer!!! For all the players on both teams. "Way to go" Great Play" Nice Shot" "What a pass"
Thanks

News Flash 2

 Coach Corner

Hello QH AYSO Coaches,

The 2015-2016 season is off and running, and with the exception of a few minor issues everything seemed to go relatively well.  There are a few important things I need to point out to all the coaches concerning the game cards.  We, as coaches, need to make sure we fill out our cards properly; this includes listing your players in numerical order with both first and last names, checking your substitutions and final score, and identifying your players of the game.  For those coaches in U8, please remember to watch your opponent's players carefully and note the top three players (by uniform number) on the back of the card.  This is important for player assessment for next season.  Please refer to your coaches' handbook for any issues with your game cards.  Everything you need to know has been clearly provided in the handbook.

Upper division coaches (U10/U12/U14) should be noting top players from the other teams.  All-star nomination forms will be coming out around the first week of October.  Applications for All-Star coaches will also be collected in early October, with coach selection occurring late October.

There are a few issues I need address with the U10-U14 coaches:

1.   As a reminder the substitution break at the half way mark of a half is just that, an opportunity to substitute players and allow others to get some water.  This is not a coaching opportunity; players need to get on and off the field quickly so the game can continue.  I witnessed quite a few coaches pulling the team together and going over game plans, doing a team cheer before players entered back on to the field.  I also saw many coaches struggling with their lineups not sure who is coming out and who is going in, coaches need to have their lineup ready before the game starts so as to not lose valuable playing time.  Please remind your players to stay on the field until they have been substituted, and remind parents to meet the players at the touch line with their water.

2.   On a quick review of some of the game cards it was noted that many teams were indicating multiple assistant coaches.  Please understand that on game day only two coaches can be on the sideline in the coach area, and these are the only two coaches who should interact with the players and referees if asked upon.  You are welcome to have as many assistant coaches helping at practice as you want (make sure they have at a minimum a volunteer form approved, and have completed Safe Haven and Concussion training), but on game day it needs to be limited to 1 head coach and 1 assistant coach, and both need to be certified to the appropriate level.

3.   I witnessed many parents and coaches entering the field of play during the match.  This is not allowed, and coaches are only permitted onto the field of play with the permission of the referee.  Please remind your parents that they should not enter the field of play during the match, especially if they are doing so to coach one or more of the children.

U06/U08 Soccer Drill of the Week

Clean Your Room

Setup

  1. Create a grid that is approximately 15 X 15 yards.  You should adjust the size of the grid depending on the size, skill set, and number of players.
  2. One player is designated as the person to clean the room.
  3. Every player other than the room cleaner needs a ball.

Instructions

  1. Start by having the players dribble around in the grid.
  2. The coach should release the room cleaner into the grid.
  3. The room cleaner's job is to steal the ball from the dribbling players and kick the ball out of the grid.
  4. The dribblers must retrieve their ball and attempt to get back into the grid as quickly as possible.
  5. The room is "clean" once they have all of the balls out of the grid at one time.
  6. The room cleaner should kick the ball out of the grid as far as they can to give them a chance to get all the players.
  7. If a player is struggling to clean their room, release a 2nd room cleaner to assist.

Variations

  • Start with 2 room cleaners (defenders)
  • Make the players do 10 jumping jacks before entering the grid.  This will give the defender a bit more time to clear the other balls out of the grid.

Coaching Points
  • Instruct the room cleaner (defender) to pressure the players with the ball quickly and kick the ball out of the grid as far as possible.
  • Dribblers must be aware of the defender (pressure) and remain calm and protect the ball.

U10/U12/U14 Drill of the Week

Center Mid Passing Combination 1

Setup
  1.  Set up a grid approximately 20 X 20 yards.  The size of the grid can be adjusted based on the age and skill level of the players.
  2. Place a midfield player inside the grid.
  3. The remaining players will split into even lines on the four corners of the grid.

Instructions

  1. Player 1 plays a ball into the central player and starts his run down the sideline to the back of the line.
  2. The central player plays a first time ball into Player 2.
  3. Player 2 plays a ball into Player 3 and sprints down the sideline to the back of the line.
  4. Player 3 passes into the central player and makes a run down the sideline to the back of the line.
  5. The central player plays a first time ball into player 4 who plays a ball into Player 1 and sprints to the end of the line.
  6. The play continues.

Variations

  • After Player 1 and Player 3 passes into the middle player, have them step in to become the middle player.

Coaching Points
  • Focus on passing weight, accuracy, timing and movement.
  • Players should communicate to make the movement flow.
  • Players should get into a rhythm.

ASSISTANT COACHES

If you have a parent volunteer who would like to be certified as an assistant coach they need to contact the Regional Coach Admin, Scott Jones, at [email protected] or (661)722-4003. Only certified coaches, having a current 2015 volunteer form on file, age appropriate training, and Safe Haven certification can be listed on the roster. An assistant coach must be on the roster for the season to be approved for play outside our region. Therefore it is very important for U10/U12/U14 teams who may go to the area playoffs and beyond to get their assistant coaches certified early.
Crazy RefereeReferee Corner

A big thanks to all the new and returning referees who hit the fields on Saturday to make sure the games were safe, fun and fair.  We had pretty good coverage for the first week, but lots of opportunities to pick up some games for those who didn't make it out for Week 1.

As a reminder of why we do the job we do and how we should approach the role we play, we've included the Referee Code below.

SEE YOU ON THE PITCH

Referees Code

  • Always remember that the game is for the players. Player safety and fair play come first.
  • Study and learn the Laws of the Game and understand the "spirit" of the Laws. Help fellow referees do the same.
  • Encourage and enforce the AYSO philosophies of "Everyone Plays," "Positive Coaching" and "Good Sportsmanship."
  • Respect other referees' decisions, and do not publicly criticize another official.
  • Wear the proper uniform and keep it in good condition.
  • Maintain good physical condition so you can keep up with the action.
  • Stay calm when confronted with emotional reactions from players, coaches and parents.
  • Honor accepted game assignments. In an emergency, find a replacement.
  • Support good sportsmanship with a kind word to players, coaches and parents of both teams when deserved.
  • Always be fair and impartial, avoiding conflicts of interest. Decisions based on personal bias are dishonest and unacceptable.

BECOME A REFEREE: It is the best seat in the house!

Interested in becoming a referee? There is still time!. We have a one day class scheduled for Sunday, September 27.  Remember, with Tournament Team tryouts coming soon, becoming a referee can help your child's chances of being selected for a team.  For details on how to signup go to our website www.qhayso.org and click on referee information.  Questions?  Call Tim at 943-9377.

All teams in U10 thru U14 need to obtain at least 7 referee points just to be considered for post-season play.  No team can earn more than 10 points.

A team can earn up to 2 points a week from any Referee who chooses to donate them referee points they earned for:

U8 Referee: point

U10-U14 Assistant Referee: point

U16-U19 Assistant Referee: 1 point

U10-U19 Referee: 1 point

Top Youth U8 Referee Contest

This year we are having a contest to see which Youth referees can do the most U8 games.  Prizes will be awarded at our annual volunteer appreciation night. One week into the season and only a handful of Youth refs have joined the competition.  Remember there are multiple prizes for both male and female leaders, so there is plenty of time to get to the top of the leader board.  Here are the standings:

 Referee Contest

Every year we have a friendly competition to see who can do the most refereeing.  This contest is already in full swing as a bunch of dedicated Quartz Hill referees have a three-week head start from refereeing Upper Division U16 and U19 games between teams from all over the Antelope Valley.  Here is our leader board:

Safety Tip of the Week

Ever wonder WHY you have to take jewelry off before playing soccer??  Maybe this excerpt from a sports magazine will help!

Before you play soccer, you need to make certain that you are not wearing miscellaneous accessories such as earrings, anklets and other pieces of jewelry that could be broken or cause harm. Earrings in particular are prone to being torn from earlobes when contact is made with a soccer ball.  In extreme cases, earrings have been jammed into the base of the skull or into an artery in the neck.   By removing these pieces of jewelry and other items of this nature, you can help prevent injuries to yourself or others.   If you are considering getting piercings and you play soccer, you may want to consider planning to have your piercings done when the soccer season is over.

Excerpt from TopEndSports - the sports science resource

In the end, you do have a choice if the coach or referee asks you to remove the jewelry that you are wearing, you can remove it and play in the game or leave it on and watch!

Region 638 Zero Tolerance Policy

In the past years, Region 638 has witnessed incidents where coaches &/or spectators questioned the calls of referees requiring referees to stop matches to deal with the situation. There have also unfortunately been incidents once a game has ended when coaches &/or spectators confront referees or other volunteers over decisions made during the game. These incidents prompt me to remind everyone that Region 638 has a long standing, zero tolerance policy prohibiting such behavior.

Our zero tolerance policy applies to all Referees and AYSO volunteers and will be enforced as follows:
  1. If a coach or spectator questions the call of a referee, the referee may stop the match, retrieve the game ball, and invite the coach onto the field for a conversation.
  2. During this conversation the coach may be told 3 things:
    • The purpose of the conversation is not to debate a call but to inform the coach that the behavior of the coach/spectator is unacceptable.
    • The coach has 2 choices. He/she can go back to their coaching area and coach per AYSO philosophies or the coach/spectator can leave the playing facility.
    • The coach/spectator will be sent off if the referee has to speak to them again during the match.
  3. If the referee is a youth referee, the youth referee may stop the match, retrieve the game ball, and find a board member to deal with the situation as described above.
  4. Any coach/spectator who is heard verbally abusing a referee will automatically be sent off by the referee (if an adult) or a board member (in the case of a youth referee). Verbal abuse includes foul and abusive language and comments with racial or sexual overtones.
  5. If the unacceptable behavior of the coach/spectator occurs after the game has ended it will still be reported by the referee and will be considered as a send off.
  6. Referees will report any occurrences where a coach/spectator is sent off and there will be an investigation to determine the subsequent penalty. The penalties are at the discretion of the Region and may include suspension from future games.
  7. The Region also reserves the right to investigate instances when abuse of a referee or volunteer is not reported by the referee or volunteer but is subsequently brought to our attention. The penalties are at the discretion of the Region and may include suspension from future games.

Teams should arrive 15 minutes before their scheduled time. Every player should have a form and it should be completely filled out whether making a purchase in addition to the Region package or not.  Region package includes: 1 Memory Mate, a button, and 4-wallets.  If making an additional purchase, checks should be made out to Ultimate Exposures.

                               Safety Reminder
We need your helping keeping things SAFE for our PLAYERS and ASSISTANT REFEREES.

On Lower Joe Walker, there can be
NO "Easy-Ups" used between Fields 2 and 3.

There is never enough space to do this in a safe manner.

In addition, every week we are asking that the Home (West) side spectators of FIELD 3 set up to the LEFT of their centerline, while the Away (East) side spectators of FIELD 2 also set up to the LEFT of their centerline.

This way, the spectators on both fields can be the required 3 yards from the touchline, the assistant referee will not be endanger of tripping over a spectator AND your spectators will not have the assistant referee constantly running right in front of them.

NO SMOKING ALLOWED

No Smoking Sign

QH AYSO is a Kids Zone which, among other things, means we have a strict no smoking policy, including e-cigarettes.  Please refrain from smoking at any field or area that is utilized by QH AYSO  - this includes the perimeter of the parking lots where children may be walking by.  If a child can see you, you are in a location where you are not allowed to smoke.

Thank you for your cooperation!
TrashCan
TRASH, TRASH, TRASH!

Each week as the games come to an end, our fields and the surrounding areas are littered with TRASH!  We need to show respect for ourselves and our community and not leave our trash behind!   Before you leave to go home and enjoy the rest of your weekend, please make sure that our fields, the parking lot, and the roads where we park are clean!  If you are the last game of the day please make sure to pick up any trash still remaining and also return any AYSO trash cans to the snack bar area or pick up location for your field.

Together we can keep our fields and our community clean!

No Cleats

NO CLEATS
on the
JOE WALKER  OR
 GREGG ANDERSON TRACKS!!!

To all Parents, Coaches, and Players:

Please do not run on these tracks while wearing cleats!  This can cause severe and costly damage to the track which QH AYSO will be responsible for repairing.

Thanks for your cooperation!
NO PETS ALLOWED!!!

No Pets

As in previous years, Quartz Hill AYSO will continue this season to observe the No Pets Allowed policy.  Pets are not allowed at any practices or games at any field anytime, with the exception of service animals.  This rule is for the safety of our children, families, and pets.  In addition, animals on school property puts our permit with the school district at risk.  If we lose the use o Joe Walker, Gregg Anderson, and Esperanza, our program would be greatly compromised.  Please make sure to let anyone know who is coming to support your player of our policy.  Anyone with a pet will be asked to leave the field and the game will be stopped until they have complied.

If you have any questions regarding this policy, please contact our Safety Director, Josh Duncan at 661-436-0180.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Lost and Found
Looking for a lost ball, gym bag, or even a set of keys?  Come by the Snack Bar at JW/LP and take a peek at our Lost and Found - your lost item might just be in there!  Any unclaimed items will be donated to a worthy charity at the end of the season!

  Sponsors

Quartz Hill AYSO would like to thank our Sponsors for the 2015 Season!   The donations from our sponsors allow Quartz Hill AYSO to provide soccer scholarships and help to keep our registration fees affordable so that everyone can play. It is clear that without the generous support of businesses and individuals, Quartz Hill AYSO Region 638 could not continue to offer our children such a well-rounded soccer program at such an affordable price.  We thank our wonderful sponsors for their support and ask our players and their families to support these sponsors whenever possible in return!
