Philadelphia Science Festival

Drexel Engineering will be participating in the Philadelphia Science Festival, a ten-day, community-wide celebration of science that takes place annually, featuring lectures, debates, hands-on activities, special exhibitions and a variety of other informal science education experiences for Philadelphians of all ages. Drexel Engineering will be participating in Philly Tech Week 2013, a week-long celebration of technology and innovation in Philadelphia. The annual week of events is intended to grow the impact of the innovative region through programming focused on technology, collaboration and improving Philadelphia. Great Gigs: Open Lab Edition

What is a typical day at the office for some of the coolest local scientists? Meet a forensic anthropologist who finds evidence at a crime scene and a marine scientist who has explored the oceans deep. Plus, hear from a robotics engineer and his piano playing robots. The Science of Jazz

Drexel's Mandell Theater (3210 Chestnut Street)
Experience the science behind the music in this unique performance augmented with large-screen visuals and an interactive iPhone App illustrating the principles of frequency, harmony, and acoustics. Acclaimed keyboardist Marc Cary leads his Focus Trio along with featured soloist and Grammy-Award winning percussionist Will Calhoun and other special guests in a tour de force of virtuoso jazz. The event, visuals, and app are produced by Drexel University's ExCITe Center. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased via http://ph.ly/ScienceOfJazz.

Scaling the Cira Centre: Play Pong Over Philly

Philadelphia Art Museum steps

During Philly Tech Week, play a large-scale Pong game on the Cira Centre's north-facing wall that rises 401-feet over 30th Street Station. A select number of guests will be able to battle it out with arcade-style controllers during this game of epic proportions. This event is free and open to the public. 

Making Broadband Broader: Connecting Tech Communities to Bridge the Gap

What if we told you there is an untapped, local audience for your latest and greatest mobile app? The digitally under-served (read: people who have the mobile access, but may not know of existing tools) are an important and unrealized group here in Philadelphia. This proposed "mash up" will bring together developers, entrepreneurs, data gurus, digital literacy trainers, and technology newbies for a dynamic roundtable discussion. Digital Entertainment Conference

Every year, the UMBC Game Developers Club organizes a Digital Entertainment Conference (DEC) with a day of games industry veterans speaking on a variety of topics. The DEC is free, open to anyone, and features speakers from Firaxis Games, Zenimax, Pure Bang Games, Bioware Mythic, and Mindgrub. Attention Pre-Juniors

As you enter your pre-junior year, you will start being advised by the Computer Science Department advisor, Andrea Negro. Each CS and SE (CoE) student must meet with the advisor at least once throughout their undergraduate time here. Please email amn27@drexel.edu to set up a meeting.

If you are a junior or senior and have not met with Andrea yet, contact her for an appointment as soon as possible. Students that are on co-op can wait until they return in the Fall. Additional advising information can be found here.

Need help with classes? Visit the Cyber Learning Center (CLC)

The Cyber Learrning Center (CLC) provides consulting and other learning resources for students taking computer science classes. It's staffed by graduate and undergraduate students employed by the CS Department. Students can receive help during office hours (drop-in or by appointment). Services include review sessions for exams, small group study sessions, homework/lab help, and a mini-library.

Spring Term Hours:

  • Mondays: 12 to 7 p.m.
  • Tuesdays and Wednesdays: 12 to 6 p.m.
  • Thursdays: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Friday: NONE

Gaming Student Assistants Needed for Drexel Computing Summer Program 
Drexel University Computing Academy (DUCA) is a five-week, residential summer computing program that promotes interest in information technology, computer science, business and digital arts and media. Over 50 high school students are expected to attend this year. DUCA runs from June 23 through July 27. In weeks 3-5, the students spend most of their time in groups constructing projects selected from a list of thematic offerings. This year, the CS department has been asked to coordinate and mentor projects in the area of game design and development. We are currently looking for CS students to participate in this area. This will be a paid position and supervision will be provided. If you are interested in participating or would like to know more about this opportunity, please contact Dave Augenblick (CS Department - Associate Teaching Professor) at augenbdh@cs.drexel.edu.
Scholarship Opportunity Available for Pre-Juniors, Juniors, and Seniors 
The Association of Federal Communications Consulting Engineers (AFCCE) Scholarship is to provide financial assistance to students who are undertaking a full-time undergraduate (Bachelor's) program at an accredited college or university with a major in engineering or science and related to the telecommunications field. The AFCCE Scholarship generally ranges from $1,000 to $2,500 per semester depending upon the qualifications of the candidate as well as the candidate's demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in the broadcast consulting engineering or related fields. Since 2006, AFCCE has awarded on average over $15,000 annually for The AFCCE Scholarship. Apply now. 
Google Summer of Code and FOSS Outreach Program for Women Internships
Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) is software that gives the user
the freedom to use, copy, study, change, and improve it. Google Summer of Code is a global program that offers students stipends to write code for FOSS projects. Participants work remotely from home, while getting guidance from an assigned mentor and  collaborating within their project's community. The application deadline for Google Summer of Code is May 3 and the program dates are June 17 to September 23. The stipend for the program is $5,000 (USD). 
In an effort to get more women involved in FOSS, a number of organizations are offering Outreach Program for Women internships through a program organized by the GNOME Foundation. Click here to view more information about this outreach program. 
Attention Graduating Seniors: The Order of the Engineer Accepting Applications
Drexel University Link 197 of The Order of the Engineer will hold its annual induction ceremony on Thursday, 13 June 2013.  All graduating engineering seniors, faculty and practicing engineers are invited to join.  Our speaker this year will be Ms. Janet Cunningham, P.E., President of JBC Associates, a construction management firm she founded in 1988.  Inductees and their guests are invited to a reception following the ceremony.  (Venue on campus to be determined.)  If you wish to join, please fill out the application below and turn it in with a check made out to Drexel University Chi Epsilon in the amount of $11.00.  Please bring payment and application form to Sharon Stokes or Sarah Colins in Curtis 251 before May 17, 2013.  Please see this registration form for more information.
The Tech Awards

The Tech Awards, a signature program of The Tech Museum of Innovation, will honor 10 international innovators who are applying technology to confront humanity's most urgent challenges. The Tech Awards honors individuals, non-profit organizations and for-profit companies who are using technology to significantly improve human conditions in 5 awards categories.
