Drexel MCS: Financial Software Design Talk with Sean Durkin

Join the Math and Computer Science Society (MCS) for a talk by Drexel alumnus Sean Durkin '06, group leader of analysts and developers from Financial Software Systems (FSS). Sean will be talking about the challenges in unique financial software design. Also, the discussion will cover career aspects, such as open entry-level candidate positions at FSS and what they look for in a student applicant.

Drexel University is pleased to host the largest university-held Career Fair in the Greater Philadelphia area open to all majors. "Putting Watson to Work in Healthcare"

IBM's Watson captured the imagination of millions when it beat the all-time champions of the US game show, Jeopardy. It was a huge leap forward in the computer science discipline of question answering. IBM is now putting Watson to work, in healthcare, in financial services, in customer service. IBM Healthcare Industry Architect Ed Nazarko will explain the knowledge IBM gained in building and training Watson and how the company is creating a whole new set of cognitive computing capabilities in its products that will be every bit as transformational as Watson. First Steps to Fulbright Workshops

Come hear about the Fulbright Study/Research grants from Drexel students who are finalists for the program and staff from the Drexel Fellowships Office. In this workshop, we will review the basics of the Fulbright US Student Program and consider a range of projects that students have done with the support of a Fulbright grant. Dean's Lecture Series Featuring Dr. Adam Fontecchio

Dr. Adam Fontecchio, professor of electrical and computer engineering and associate dean of undergraduate affairs, will serve as the next speaker for the Dean's Lecture Series. In Fontecchio's lecture, "From STEM to STEAM - Broadening the Impact of Drexel University Educational and Research Initiatives through the ExCITe Center," he will discuss the recent trends that have indicated a decline in the creativity of U.S. students. In addition, Fontecchio will focus on how the solution of the STEM to STEAM approach is capitalizing on the potential of combining digital creativity and technical focus to develop the next generation of leaders, spark innovation and drive economic growth. The Dean's Lecture Series is free and open to the public. 

Philadelphia Science Festival

Drexel Engineering will be participating in the Philadelphia Science Festival, a ten-day, community-wide celebration of science that takes place annually, featuring lectures, debates, hands-on activities, special exhibitions and a variety of other informal science education experiences for Philadelphians of all ages. Scaling the Cira Centre: Play Pong Over Philly 
April 19 and April 24
8 p.m.
Philadelphia Art Museum steps

To kick-off Philly Tech Week, Dr. Frank Lee, CS teaching professor and co-founder of the Drexel Game Design Program, presents a large-scale Pong game on the Cira Centre's north-facing wall that rises 401-feet over 30th Street Station. A select number of guests will be able to battle it out with arcade-style controllers during this game of epic proportions. This event is free and open to the public. To be one of the limited number playing in the Pong tournament, register for the chance at Ph.ly/Pong before April 12 at 5 p.m.

Women in Tech Summit

Please join the Philadelphia Women in Tech Summit 2013 for an opportunity to learn, network and learn about mentoring opportunities. The event will feature keynote speakers and workshops addressing UX, Cloud, mobility, app development, security social and big data. International Space Apps Challenge

Presented by NASA and hosted by Azavea, the International Space Apps Challenge is a two-day hackathon where citizens from around the world work together to design innovative solutions for global challenges in software development, citizen science platforms, sensors and hardware, and data visualization. Deadline for Spring Term Course Adjustments
The deadline to add/drop a course on DrexelOne is Sunday (April 14) at 11 p.m. If you need academic advising assistance, you must contact us no later than 4 pm Friday (April 12). 
Note: Dropping a course will result in all evidence of it being removed from the student's transcript. Approval of the instructor is not required for students to drop a course.

Gaming Student Assistants Needed for Drexel Computing Summer Program 
Drexel University Computing Academy (DUCA) is a five-week, residential summer computing program that promotes interest in information technology, computer science, business and digital arts and media. Over 50 high school students are expected to attend this year. DUCA runs from June 23 through July 27. In weeks 3-5, the students spend most of their time in groups constructing projects selected from a list of thematic offerings. This year, the CS department has been asked to coordinate and mentor projects in the area of game design and development. We are currently looking for CS students to participate in this area. This will be a paid position and supervision will be provided. If you are interested in participating or would like to know more about this opportunity, please contact Dave Augenblick (CS Department - Associate Teaching Professor) at augenbdh@cs.drexel.edu.
Become a Sea Perch Competition Judge
April 26-27, 2013
Daskalakis Athletic Center (DAC)

The College of Engineering is looking for engineering and science-related professors and graduate students to volunteer to become a judge at the 2013 Greater Philadelphia Sea Perch Challenge. More than 80 middle and high school underwater robotic teams will compete for first place and a chance to enter the 2013 Sea Perch Nationals Competition. Volunteers are needed to judge the following categories: Vehicle Performance, Oral Presentation, Notebook Submission, and Team & Sportsmanship. The Harold W. Pote "Behind Every Graduate" Award
Nominations due April 12

Graduating seniors are invited to nominate that special high school teacher who inspired them to pursue a college education as they embark on their careers. In 2006, Drexel University initiated the Harold W. Pote "Behind Every Graduate" Award for Excellence in Secondary School Teaching. The award was created to acknowledge outstanding high school teachers who provided a new perspective or inspired a student to consider a certain major or career. Drexel University values the high school teachers who have inspired our graduates and it will honor the high school teachers and the students who nominated them at its commencement 2013 ceremony. The Tech Awards
Applications due May 1, 2013

The Tech Awards, a signature program of The Tech Museum of Innovation, will honor 10 international innovators who are applying technology to confront humanity's most urgent challenges. The Tech Awards honors individuals, non-profit organizations and for-profit companies who are using technology to significantly improve human conditions in 5 awards categories.
