Questions? Email Ann Enkiri at [email protected].

The Lectionary
for Sunday, October 4

XVIV Sunday after Pentecost

The Collect

Most high, omnipotent, good Lord, grant your people grace gladly to renounce the vanities of this world; that, following the way of blessed Francis, we may for love of you delight in your whole creation with perfect joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Jeremiah 22:13-16

Woe to him who builds his house by unrighteousness, and his upper rooms by injustice;
who makes his neighbours work for nothing, and does not give them their wages; who says, 'I will build myself a spacious house with large upper rooms', and who cuts out windows for it, panelling it with cedar, and painting it with vermilion.

Are you a king because you compete in cedar? Did not your father eat and drink and do justice and righteousness? Then it was well with him. He judged the cause of the poor and needy; then it was well. Is not this to know me? says the Lord.

Psalm 148:1-5, 7-13

1 Praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord from the heavens;
   praise God in the heights!

2 Praise the Lord, all God's angels;
   praise the Lord, all God's host!

3 Praise God, sun and moon;
   praise the Lord, all you shining stars!

4 Praise the Lord, you highest heavens,
   and you waters above the heavens!

5 Let them praise the name of the Lord,
   for God commanded and they were created.

7 Praise the Lord from the earth,
   you sea monsters and all deeps,

8 Fire and hail, snow and frost,
   stormy wind fulfilling God's command!

9 Mountains and all hills,
   fruit trees and all cedars!

10 Wild animals and all cattle,
   creeping things and flying birds!

11 Kings of the earth and all peoples,
   princes and all rulers of the earth!

12 Young men and women alike,
   old and young together!

13 Let them praise the name of the Lord,
   for God's name alone is exalted;
   God's glory is above earth and heaven.

Galatians 6:14-18

May I never boast of anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither circumcision nor uncircumcision is anything; but a new creation is everything! As for those who will follow this rule-- peace be upon them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God.

From now on, let no one make trouble for me; for I carry the marks of Jesus branded on my body. May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers and sisters. Amen.

Matthew 6:25-34

 'Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life? And why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you-you of little faith? Therefore do not worry, saying, "What will we eat?" or "What will we drink?" or "What will we wear?" For it is the Gentiles who strive for all these things; and indeed your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
 'So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today's trouble is enough for today.
