AGH Projects & Activities

Traditionally, we think about 2 types of stoves: non-catalytic and catalytic. But as stove innovation moves forward, we should think about 4 types of stoves: non-catalytic, catalytic, hybrid, and automated. Hybrid and automated stoves offer consumers exciting new options and show that wood stove technology is on the move.

The Alliance tries to track all the stove policies that impact wood and pellet stoves, from incentives and rebates to bans on installing uncertified stoves and much more. Here's an updated survey.

Focus on Innovation

For some reason, firepits have become much more popular, and are now adding to woodsmoke pollution concerns. This is the first one we have seen that has secondary combustion, letting you enjoy the fire without all the smoke. Please pass along.

CSU, Chico students received a second-place award for their Wood Stove Heat Exchanger project. The heat exchanger's purpose is to use heat from a wood-burning stove to heat water for use in homes where solar energy isn't an option or supplemental heating source is needed.

Stirring is one of the best ways to mix things, but did you know it works in a fire too? MF Fire's Catalyst wood stove uses secondary combustion to mix up fuel and oxygen and drastically reduce soot and carbon monoxide.

Focus on NSPS

State Senator Tom Casperson of Escanaba is in a three-way Republican battle for Congress in the Aug. 2 primary in the sprawling 1st U.S. House district, which encompasses much of northern Michigan and all of the Upper Peninsula. The State Senator claims that he put a stop to the EPA's NSPS rule "to end the use of wood heat."

Focus on Pellets

Sixty-five percent of pellets exported from the US to Europe are still for a very efficient use - heating. Italy uses more pellets for heating than any other European country and has doubled its imports since 2010.

Washington Watch

Residential PACE loans are now set to take off. Homeowners nationwide will be able to finance renewable energy and energy efficiency upgrades through a small payments on their property tax bill over 30 year period by whoever owns the home. However, clean biomass heaters like pellet stoves and boilers are not necessarily covered in every state, unless advocates ensure they are included.

The energy section of the Republican platform (pp. 17 - 22), would devastate the renewable heating movement. The platform does not mention "energy efficiency" and basically calls for government to prop up coal and fossil fuels while leaving renewables to the private sector.

Thanks to efforts from BTEC members, two biomass boilers are on the NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory) Technology Performance Exchange Database (www.tpex.org) - a Windhager and BioWIN unit. BTEC's Thermal Efficiency Protocol, currently being revised, will provide a useful way to measure boiler efficiencies across manufacturers for databases such as TPEX.
