Update on Measures of Academic Progress

Our community has engaged in a deep discussion during the last two months about the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment, which provides data used for screening and analyzing student achievement and measuring growth over time. The Task Force on Assessment and Making Process has been meeting since February and is expected to make a recommendation to me in May regarding assessments for the 2013-14 school year.

symposium scheduled for May 18

Seattle Public Schools will hold a Building Bridges for Summer Learning symposium on Saturday, May 18 at Garfield High School. All families are invited to attend this free event which includes workshops and a Summer Learning Community Resource Fair.

John Muir wins Global Reading Challenge Final

john muir reading challenge winnersJohn Muir's 'Bookettes' won the Global Reading Challenge Final held April 2 at the Seattle Public Library central branch. The program encourages children to have fun and enjoy reading. After reading 10 books, children participate in semi-final and city final rounds of a "Quiz Bowl" game to determine Seattle's champion team.

Caroline Kennedy visits Sanislo for National Library Week

Caroline KennedyCaroline Kennedy visited the Sanislo Elementary School library April 8 as part of her ongoing work as honorary chair for National Library Week. Kennedy, the daughter of President John F. Kennedy, is an attorney and has published several books. At Sanislo, Kennedy visited with a first-grade class and met with students from the school's Poetry Club.
